The quickest method depends on your operating system. On Windows, press Windows + Shift + S for a selectable capture or Windows + PrtScn to save the whole screen. On a Mac, use Shift-Command-3 for the full display or Shift-Command-4 for an area. On a Chromebook, press the screenshot key or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. Before using a shortcut, identify whether your computer runs Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS; the key combinations and default save locations differ.
Choose your computer’s operating system
Look at the interface before pressing keys. The Windows logo and Start menu indicate Windows 10 or 11. The Apple menu in the upper-left corner indicates macOS. A Chromebook runs ChromeOS and normally shows the Chrome browser and a launcher rather than a traditional Windows or Mac desktop. The sections below use the built-in tools documented for each platform, so you do not need third-party screenshot software for ordinary captures.
| Platform | Full-screen method | Area or window method | Typical default destination |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | Windows + PrtScn saves an image; PrtSc copies the screen | Windows + Shift + S opens Snipping Tool | Pictures > Screenshots for Windows + PrtScn; clipboard for PrtSc |
| macOS | Shift-Command-3 | Shift-Command-4, then Space for a window | Desktop |
| ChromeOS | Screenshot key or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows | Screen Capture controls offer partial or window capture | Downloads and clipboard |
How to take a screenshot on Windows 10 or Windows 11
Capture a selected area, window, or full screen
- Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool capture bar appears.
- Choose a mode: rectangular selection, freeform selection, window, or full screen.
- For a region, drag around the content. For a window, select the window; for full screen, select the full-screen option.
- The capture opens in Snipping Tool. Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to annotate, save, copy, or share it.
This is the most flexible Windows shortcut because it lets you decide the scope before saving. Interface details can vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Save the entire screen directly
Press Windows + PrtScn. Windows saves the image in File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. If your keyboard has no PrtScn key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows + Space bar as an alternative. Open File Explorer and browse to the Screenshots folder to rename, move, or edit the file.

Copy the screen without creating a file
Press PrtSc to copy a full-screen image to the clipboard. Open an image editor, document, email, or chat and press Ctrl + V to paste it. On some devices or configurations, the PrtSc key opens the Snipping Tool overlay instead; use the on-screen controls if that happens.
Capture a menu or other temporary element
Open Snipping Tool, choose its delay control, select a delay from one to five seconds, and start the capture. A delay gives you time to open a menu or position a tooltip before the image is taken. Microsoft documents a five-second example, but shorter delays may be enough for simple menus.
How to take a screenshot on a Mac
Capture the entire screen
Press Shift-Command-3. macOS captures every visible display area and saves the image to the desktop by default.
Capture a selected area
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Drag the crosshair around the area you want.
- Release the mouse or trackpad button to capture it.

Use the Screenshot app for timers and destinations
On macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app. Choose full-screen, window, or selected-area capture, then open Options to set a timer, choose a save location, control the floating thumbnail, and show or hide the mouse pointer. A timer is helpful for menus and other elements that disappear when you press a shortcut.
Copy instead of saving
Hold Control with the relevant screenshot shortcut to copy the image to the clipboard rather than save it as a file. You can also use the floating thumbnail’s context menu. Paste with Command-V.
Some apps, including Apple TV, may block screenshots of their windows. That is an app-specific restriction, not a general Mac problem. Apple also documents SDR/PNG or HDR/HEIF choices on supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later; the available format depends on both hardware and system version.
How to take a screenshot on a Chromebook
Open Screen Capture
If your keyboard has a dedicated screenshot key, press it. Otherwise use either Shift + Ctrl + Show windows or open Settings/Quick Settings > Screen Capture. The Show windows key is the rectangle-overlapping-lines key in the top row.
On an external keyboard without Show windows, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as an alternative.

Choose what to capture
- Open the Screen Capture controls.
- Choose full-screen, partial, or window capture.
- For a partial capture, drag over the area. For a window capture, select the window.
- Complete the capture and open the notification if you need to edit or move the file.
ChromeOS automatically copies the screenshot to the clipboard and saves it in Downloads by default. Use the capture settings to select another folder. Paste a copied image with Ctrl + V.
Clipboard or file: choose the output you need
Use the clipboard for a quick message
Clipboard capture is fastest when you need to paste an image into an email, support ticket, document, or chat and do not need a permanent file. Windows PrtSc and Chromebook capture provide clipboard workflows; macOS adds Control to its shortcuts.

Save a file when you need to upload or archive it
Use a saved capture when a website requires an upload, when you are documenting a process, or when you need to edit the image later. Check the platform’s default folder before assuming the file is missing: Windows uses Pictures/Screenshots for the Windows + PrtScn path, macOS uses the desktop, and Chromebook uses Downloads.
Common problems and fixes
The shortcut does nothing
- Confirm that you are using the shortcut for your operating system.
- On a laptop, hold Fn when the function row shares keys.
- If PrtScn is absent, use Windows + Shift + S on Windows or the documented Windows + Space alternative.
- On Chromebook, use Screen Capture from Quick Settings or the external-keyboard shortcut.
You cannot find the image
Check the default folder for your platform, then search for recent PNG files. A clipboard-only capture will not appear as a file; paste it into an app and save it manually.
A menu closes before capture
Use the Windows Snipping Tool delay or the Mac Screenshot app timer. On other systems, open the capture controls first, then trigger the menu and capture as quickly as possible.

Only part of a window appears
Choose window capture rather than rectangular selection. On Mac, remember the Space-bar step after Shift-Command-4. On Windows and Chromebook, select the window mode in the capture controls.
The screenshot is black or blocked
Some protected applications, streaming services, or security-controlled windows prevent capture. Try capturing a non-protected page to determine whether the restriction is app-specific. Do not assume a hardware fault unless ordinary windows also fail.

If you need a screenshot of a web page rather than your physical desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.
See the complete parameter list in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This cURL request saves a WebP capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Beyond the basic call, options cover full-page captures with lazy images, CSS-selector elements, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, hiding selectors, blocked requests, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots; every feature is available on every plan, and yearly billing provides two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to install a screenshot app?
No. Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS each include built-in capture controls for full-screen, area, and window screenshots.
What is the difference between a screenshot and a screen recording?
A screenshot is a still image. The shortcuts in this guide capture images; use each platform’s separate screen-recording control when you need video.
Can I screenshot two monitors at once?
Full-screen shortcuts generally capture the visible desktop configuration, but the exact result depends on your operating system, display arrangement, and capture mode. Use a selected-area or window mode when you need one display only.
How do I edit a screenshot after capturing it?
Open the saved image in an image editor, or use the annotation controls in Windows Snipping Tool and the Mac floating thumbnail workflow before saving.
