How to Get Your WordPress Site Into Google Discover: 8 Practical Tips

You can’t submit a WordPress site to Google Discover or guarantee a spot in its feed. Google automatically considers pages that are indexed and comply with Discover’s content policies; eligibility is not a promise of visibility. The useful work is to make your pages accessible, publish material that serves a real audience, present it accurately, and review the experience on mobile. No special WordPress plugin or Discover tag is required.

1. Make sure Google can crawl and index your pages

Discover eligibility starts with a page being indexed. In WordPress, check that the post is publicly accessible and not accidentally blocked by a noindex directive or a robots.txt rule. Confirm the page loads without requiring a login and that its canonical URL points to the version you intend Google to index. Then inspect the URL in Google Search Console to see whether Google reports it as indexed.

These are checks, not an enrollment process: Google says there is no special application, markup, or tag for Discover. Its Get on Discover guidance explains that indexed content meeting Discover’s policies is automatically eligible, but may still not appear. Google also notes in Google Search Essentials that meeting technical requirements and best practices does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving.

2. Follow Discover’s content policies

Eligibility depends on complying with Discover’s content policies. Review Google’s Discover content policies before publishing, especially if a topic involves sensitive or regulated material. Avoid content that violates those policies; a technically accessible page is not enough on its own.

3. Serve an audience with useful, people-first material

Build around readers you actually intend to serve rather than publishing unrelated trend pieces solely in the hope of feed traffic. Google’s people-first content guidance asks publishers to consider whether material demonstrates first-hand expertise and depth, has a clear purpose, and leaves readers with a satisfying answer. A page that mostly recaps other sources without adding useful perspective is less likely to meet that standard.

These are editorial quality considerations, not a Discover checklist or a guarantee of distribution. Choose topics that fit your publication and give readers enough context to understand the subject.

4. Write accurate, specific headlines

Make the headline capture what the page actually delivers. Specific wording helps readers understand the article before they open it, while vague promises can create a mismatch between the headline and the content. Google’s Discover recommendations favor titles that capture the essence of the content.

5. Avoid clickbait and withheld context

Don’t exaggerate a claim, use a misleading image, or conceal a key detail just to attract clicks. Google specifically cautions against headlines, snippets, and imagery that mislead, sensationalize, or withhold crucial context. A strong headline can create interest, but it should still accurately set expectations for the page.

6. Use timely coverage or distinct insight when it fits

Google recommends content that is timely for current interests, tells a story well, or offers unique insights. That does not mean publishing more often or chasing every trend. A timely update is useful when your publication can add relevant explanation or reporting; a distinctive evergreen article can also be valuable to its intended audience.

7. Give the article a large, relevant lead image

Google’s Discover image guidance recommends an image at least 1200 pixels wide, with more than 300,000 total pixels, using a 16:9 aspect ratio. Its example, 1280 × 720 pixels, has 921,600 total pixels. Google also recommends enabling max-image-preview:large or using AMP. These are Google’s recommendations, not a promise that a qualifying image will be shown or earn traffic.

Choose a clear image that represents the article, keep its important subject visible in a landscape crop, and avoid using a generic site logo or text-heavy graphic as the preferred thumbnail. To indicate a suitable image, you can use schema.org markup or an og:image meta tag; Google may use these signals, but selects previews automatically. Its Discover documentation covers the image requirements, and its structured data guidance describes ways to identify a representative image.

On WordPress, check the rendered page rather than assuming a setting in your editor or plugin has produced the intended output. Verify that the page exposes the preferred image and that the image meets the width and preview requirements. A plugin can help generate metadata, but installing one is not a Discover submission step.

8. Review mobile page experience and monitor results

Check the complete visit, not one score

Assess whether the page is secure, readable on a phone, and easy to navigate. Review Core Web Vitals, whether ads distract from or interfere with the main content, whether interstitials obstruct it, and whether readers can distinguish the article from surrounding elements. Google’s page experience guidance says there is no single page-experience signal. Core Web Vitals are used by ranking systems, but strong report scores do not guarantee top rankings; relevance can still matter when page experience is sub-par.

Use Search Console to see whether Discover traffic appears

If your site has Discover data, open the Discover Performance report in Google Search Console. It reports impressions, clicks, and click-through rate for content shown in Discover across its surfaces, including Chrome. Google retains up to 16 months of Discover performance history, subject to a minimum-impressions threshold; it does not publish a numeric threshold in the cited guidance. If the report is absent, that does not by itself identify a technical problem.

Discover visits are less predictable and dependable than keyword-driven Search traffic, so treat them as supplemental. Changes can reflect shifts in user interests, content types, Search updates, or other factors; a decline alone is not a reason to rewrite every article. See Google’s Discover performance report documentation for report details.
