There is no single best WordPress membership plugin for every site. Choose according to your existing stack and the experience you need: a standalone membership suite, a flexible tier-and-content-gating system, a WooCommerce-connected membership layer, or a platform with built-in course and member-management tools.
This comparison can substantiate four products from current official documentation. A reliable fifth profile was not available, so this article does not invent one or imply that four vendors received identical hands-on testing.

Which plugin fits your WordPress site?
Choose MemberPress for an all-in-one membership and course direction
MemberPress is positioned as a membership, paywall and LMS plugin. Its documented rules can target pages, posts, custom post types, categories, tags and other files. The Courses add-on, timed release tools and payment options make it a reasonable starting point when you want one product to cover paid access and structured learning.
Check the commercial terms carefully. The current Launch page snapshot showed $199.50 per year and a 4.9% transaction fee for that tier in 2026. That is a vendor-published price at the time of access, not a permanent price or an independent cost benchmark.
#1 Best Overall
Choose Paid Memberships Pro for flexible plans and extensibility
Paid Memberships Pro documents restrictions for posts, pages, blocks, categories and custom post types, along with tiered plans, trials, recurring payments and content dripping. Its stated payment choices include Stripe, PayPal, manual or offline payment, and purchasing a membership level through WooCommerce.
Reporting, member directories, REST API support and hooks make it attractive when your site needs customization or integration work. Those capabilities do not establish that every feature is included in every plan, so match the required functions to the current plan documentation.
Choose WooCommerce Memberships when products and memberships are inseparable
WooCommerce Memberships is an extension for stores that already use WooCommerce. Access can be granted after a product purchase, registration or manual assignment, and rules can cover posts, pages, custom post types and products. Memberships may be unlimited or fixed-duration, with scheduled access for staged content.
Rank #2
For the common question “Do I need WooCommerce Subscriptions for WooCommerce Memberships?” the answer is yes when you want recurring memberships. Memberships itself does not provide that recurring-subscription layer; WooCommerce Subscriptions is the additional dependency.
Choose MemberMouse for self-service administration and built-in course tools
MemberMouse documents membership sales, recurring subscriptions, payment plans, protection for posts, pages, custom post types and taxonomies, timed content release, member self-service, account management and reporting. It also describes its own course-building feature set.
Its current price, renewal terms and comparative operating cost were not verified for this comparison. Treat those as decision-critical unknowns and confirm them directly before purchase.
What “content protection” actually covers
Membership plugins do not all protect the same thing. A rule for a page or product controls access through WordPress, but it does not necessarily secure the underlying downloadable file URL.
Pages, posts and custom content
MemberPress, Paid Memberships Pro, WooCommerce Memberships and MemberMouse each document rules for different combinations of pages, posts, custom post types, taxonomies, categories, tags or blocks. Map your actual content model before choosing: a site built around custom post types may need different rules from a simple blog with protected pages.

WooCommerce Memberships is the clearest fit when access should follow a product purchase, registration or order state. Other plugins can sell memberships or integrate with stores, but the exact checkout and order workflow must be verified for your stack.
Rank #4
Direct downloadable files
WooCommerce’s documentation explicitly says Memberships does not itself restrict the URL of a downloadable file. Direct file access depends on server configuration. Protecting the product or the page that links to a file therefore does not automatically secure anyone who already has the file URL.

Compare the complete billing system, not only the annual plugin license.
- Native versus dependent billing: WooCommerce Memberships requires WooCommerce Subscriptions for recurring memberships. A separate extension changes both setup and recurring license cost.
- Gateway availability: Paid Memberships Pro documents Stripe, PayPal, manual/offline payment and WooCommerce purchase of a membership level. For the other products, confirm that the gateway and country support you need are available on your selected plan.
- Transaction fees: MemberPress’s Launch page displayed a 4.9% transaction fee alongside $199.50 annual pricing at the time of access in 2026. Verify whether that fee applies to your transaction flow and whether the offer has changed.
- Renewals and extensions: Include renewal pricing, required add-ons, payment processing fees, hosting and any WooCommerce subscriptions in your first-year and ongoing budgets.
Courses, dripping and community expectations
“Membership plugin” can mean several different products. Some sites need only a paywall; others need a course builder, scheduled lessons, a member directory or a community integration.
- Course delivery: MemberPress documents a Courses add-on, while MemberMouse documents built-in course-building features. Paid Memberships Pro and WooCommerce Memberships document access rules and dripping, but you should verify the separate learning-system tools you require.
- Drip schedules: MemberPress, Paid Memberships Pro, WooCommerce Memberships and MemberMouse document timed or scheduled release in different forms. Check whether release is based on signup, purchase, a fixed date or another trigger.
- Community: A membership level alone does not create forums, profiles or social activity. Confirm the community integration and moderation workflow separately.
A practical selection checklist
- List every asset to protect: pages, posts, blocks, custom post types, products, categories, taxonomies and downloadable files.
- Decide whether members pay once, renew automatically, use trials, or receive access after a WooCommerce purchase.
- Write down your required gateway, currency, country and tax workflow before comparing plans.
- Identify whether you need course authoring, drip schedules, directories, reporting, REST/API access or member self-service.
- Calculate first-year and renewal cost, including extensions, transaction fees, payment processing and hosting.
- Plan migration: exportable member records, levels, passwords, orders and content rules matter if you are replacing an existing system.
- Test direct file delivery separately from page protection, especially for paid downloads.
Why there is no defensible fifth ranking here
The available official material supports detailed profiles for four candidates, but not a fifth current profile with comparable feature, dependency and pricing evidence. Restrict Content Pro and Wishlist Member are possible candidates for a future expanded comparison, but their current details are not established here. Ranking a fifth plugin anyway would turn an evidence gap into a made-up recommendation.
The Bottom Line
Use MemberPress for a standalone membership-and-course direction, Paid Memberships Pro for flexible rules and extensibility, WooCommerce Memberships when access is tied to a WooCommerce store, and MemberMouse when its self-service and course features fit your model. Verify current prices, renewals, gateways and file-protection behavior before committing.
