To capture an entire web page, install a full-page screenshot extension such as GoFullPage from your browser’s official extension store, open the page, click the extension’s toolbar icon, wait while it scrolls and assembles the capture, then export a PNG, JPG or PDF. In Firefox, GoFullPage also documents Alt+Shift+P. This works best on ordinary HTML pages; PDF viewers, custom scrolling areas and exceptionally large pages can produce incomplete or split results.
What a “long screenshot” actually captures
A long screenshot is also called a full-page or scrolling screenshot. Instead of recording only the pixels currently visible in the browser window, an extension captures the page in sections while moving down the document, then presents the assembled result for export.

The output is a static file. It is useful for design reviews, bug reports, documentation and sharing a page without asking someone to reproduce your scroll position. It does not preserve the page’s links, scripts or interactivity.
Prepare the browser and extension safely
Use the official store
Find GoFullPage in the official Chrome Web Store when using Chrome or another supported Chromium browser. Firefox users should use the official Firefox Add-ons listing. Check that the developer name is GoFullPage before installing; similarly named extensions can request different access.

Review permissions
A capture extension needs access to the active page so it can read and scroll the document. Read the permission prompt and the store listing before granting access. If your organization manages browser extensions, an administrator may need to approve it.
Open the final page state first
Navigate to the exact URL, sign in if your normal browser session requires it, and put the page in the state you want to document. Close menus or dialogs that should not appear in the result. If the site loads content only after scrolling, allow the page to finish its own loading before starting the capture.
Capture a full page with GoFullPage
Chrome and Chromium browsers
- Open the page you want to record.
- Click the GoFullPage icon in the browser toolbar. If it is hidden, open the extensions menu and pin it so the icon is visible.
- Let the extension scroll through the document and process the sections. Do not navigate away or close the tab while it is working.
- When the result appears, inspect the whole image for missing sections, duplicated content or an unexpected stopping point.
- Choose the image or PDF export that matches your use case and save the file.
Firefox
The Firefox Add-ons listing documents the same toolbar workflow and the keyboard shortcut Alt+Shift+P. Open the page, invoke GoFullPage, wait for processing, review the result and export it.
Choose an export format
- PNG: preserves sharp text and is a practical choice for technical screenshots or UI details.
- JPG: produces a smaller image when some compression is acceptable.
- PDF: is often easier to print or attach to a document. It may be paginated rather than one extremely tall canvas.
GoFullPage lists PNG, JPG and PDF output. FireShot lists several image formats and PDF, so check the format controls shown by the extension you install.

FireShot’s Chrome listing emphasizes capturing scrolling areas as well as pages and includes editing and annotation features. That makes it worth considering when you need to mark up a capture or record a specific scrolling region instead of the entire document. GoFullPage’s listings focus on full-page capture and straightforward image or PDF export.
These are vendor listing descriptions, not a hands-on performance test. Pick the tool according to the scope of the capture and the editing workflow you need.
| Tool | Browser availability described in the listings | Capture scope | Formats and editing | Important caveats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GoFullPage | Chrome/Chromium and Firefox | Full-page capture by scrolling through the document | PNG, JPG and PDF; editing features are not a stated focus | PDF documents and custom JavaScript scrolling can interfere; very large captures may split into several images |
| FireShot | Chrome Web Store listing | Scrolling areas and page captures | Several image formats and PDF, with editing and annotation described | Confirm that its capture mode matches the particular page or region you need |
Pages that are difficult to capture
PDF documents in a browser viewer
GoFullPage’s FAQ says browser capture cannot access PDF documents in the usual way. A PDF opened in the browser’s built-in viewer is therefore different from an HTML page that happens to contain a link to a PDF. If the target itself is a PDF document, use the PDF’s native download or print workflow rather than assuming a page-screenshot extension can read it.
Custom scrolling areas
Some sites keep the document body fixed and scroll an inner panel with JavaScript. An extension that expects the browser window to scroll may capture only the visible panel or stop early. FireShot’s scrolling-area mode may be a better match when the content you need is inside a specific scrollable region, but the listing does not guarantee success on every custom implementation.
Very long or high-density pages
GoFullPage says very large captures, especially on high pixel-density displays, may be split into multiple images. Treat a split as a possible output, not an automatic failure. Review every resulting file and keep the set together when sharing it.
Pages that change while they are being read
Infinite feeds, rotating advertisements and content that appears only after interaction can change during the scroll. Start from a stable page state, wait for important content to load and inspect the final capture rather than assuming the extension saw exactly what was on screen at the beginning.
Troubleshooting incomplete or unusable captures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The extension icon is not visible | The extension is installed but hidden in the extensions menu | Open the browser’s extensions menu and pin the extension to the toolbar. |
| The capture stops at the first screen | The page uses a custom inner scroll area or JavaScript-controlled scrolling | Identify which element actually scrolls. Try an extension mode designed for scrolling areas, or capture the region in smaller pieces. |
| A PDF viewer produces a blank or partial result | Browser capture cannot access PDF documents in the usual way | Download or print the PDF using the viewer’s own controls instead of treating it as an HTML page. |
| The result contains only part of a very tall page | The capture may have been split because of page size or display pixel density | Look for additional output images, open each one, and reduce display scaling or capture the page in logical sections if necessary. |
| Content is missing near the bottom | The page did not load that content before the extension passed it, or the site changed while scrolling | Reload, wait for the page’s own loading to finish, scroll through it once manually, then run the capture again. |
| The extension asks for access you do not expect | Its active-page permission is broader than you are comfortable granting | Cancel installation, reread the official store listing and permission prompt, and use an extension approved by your organization if required. |
| The capture contains a menu, consent dialog or chat bubble | The overlay was present when the page was captured | Dismiss or close the overlay before invoking the extension, then verify the result in the preview. |
A reliable long-screenshot workflow
- Decide the scope: choose the entire document or a particular scrolling region before selecting a tool.
- Stabilize the page: wait for important text and images, close temporary overlays and stop animations when the site allows it.
- Capture: use the toolbar icon, or Firefox’s documented Alt+Shift+P shortcut for GoFullPage.
- Inspect: check the top, middle and bottom of the output. Look for repeated headers, missing lazy content, abrupt cropping and unexpected dialogs.
- Export deliberately: use PNG for crisp UI details, JPG when a smaller compressed image is acceptable, and PDF when printing or page-oriented sharing matters.
- Preserve context: name the file with the page title and capture date, and keep all split image parts together if the extension produces more than one file.
GoFullPage’s current listing note
The Chrome Web Store change history lists version 8.9 on 2026-09-24, describing a fix for a new URL requirement in Chromium 153 and improved dialogs. That is a dated product change, not a blanket compatibility guarantee for every Chromium release or website. Keep the extension updated through the official store and retest captures after major browser changes.
Or skip the browser setup
For scripts, CI jobs or repeatable captures, ScreenshotNeo is the first screenshot service to try: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan described here. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF.
Here are complete calls using the documented API base. The ScreenshotNeo API documentation covers the parameters and response headers.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with the page you are authorized to capture and choose an output extension that matches the response format you request.
Options relevant to long-page automation
| Need | ScreenshotNeo capability |
|---|---|
| Page scope | Full-page capture with lazy images loaded, or one element selected by CSS selector |
| Visual state | Dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale and transparent background |
| PDF output | Paper size, margins, landscape orientation and page ranges |
| Page preparation | Custom CSS and JavaScript, click an element, hide selectors, and wait for a selector, delay or network idle |
| Noise and bandwidth control | Block ads, trackers, requests or resource types |
| Authenticated pages | Custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization |
| Location-sensitive rendering | Timezone and geolocation controls |
| Output handling | Image resizing, caching with a TTL you choose, and signed links for public <img> tags |
| Scale and integration | Asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, up to 100 URLs per bulk call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification |
| Migration | Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can reduce changes when switching |
Each response identifies its result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing; only clean shots are billed. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients, so an AI agent can request captures without a hand-operated browser.

Does the documented GoFullPage shortcut work in every browser?
No. The Firefox Add-ons listing specifically documents Alt+Shift+P. Treat it as a Firefox instruction unless the listing for your browser says otherwise; the toolbar icon is the portable method.
What does the Chromium 153 note for GoFullPage 8.9 mean?
The Chrome listing records a 2026-09-24 change that fixed a new URL requirement in Chromium 153 and improved dialogs. It describes that release’s change, not guaranteed support for every future browser version or site.
