How to Find and Download an Image Using Chrome Inspect Element

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a website disables right-click, use Chrome DevTools to locate the image’s actual URL: inspect the image in Elements, check its src, srcset or CSS background, then open the appropriate URL in a new tab and save it. If the image is loaded dynamically or you cannot find it in the page markup, use DevTools’ Network panel to identify the image request. Finding a file does not by itself grant permission to reuse it.

Find a visible image in Elements

  1. Open the page containing the image in Chrome.
  2. Right-click the image and choose Inspect. If the site blocks the context menu, open DevTools and turn on the selector picker instead. Chrome’s shortcuts are Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows, Linux and ChromeOS, and Cmd+Option+C on macOS. Click the image; Chrome highlights the corresponding node in Elements.
  3. Look for an <img> element. Its src attribute may hold the image URL. Copy the value and open it in a new tab to check that it resolves to the image you want.
  4. If the value is relative, such as a path rather than a complete web address, use the fully resolved URL shown by DevTools or let the browser resolve it against the page’s origin. When the image is open by itself, use Chrome’s normal Save image as command.

A page may use a thumbnail in src and offer other versions in srcset. Check that attribute too. If the markup uses <picture>, inspect its nested <source> elements: they can provide different image candidates for different screen sizes or display conditions. Do not assume the first candidate is the largest. Choose the URL and dimensions that suit your intended use.

Choose the method that matches how the image is displayed

What you see Where to look What the result gives you
A visible image element Elements: inspect src, srcset and any <picture> or <source> markup A candidate image URL from the page markup
An image used as a background Styles or Computed: find background-image: url(...) The URL referenced by the CSS background
A lazy-loaded or script-generated image Network: reload and inspect image requests The request the page actually made
A rendered copy of one DOM node Right-click the node in the Elements tree and choose Capture node screenshot A screenshot of the rendered node, not necessarily its original file or full source resolution

Download a CSS background image

Background images are not necessarily represented by an <img> element. Select the element that visually contains the image, then look in the Styles or Computed pane for a background-image declaration containing url(...). Open that URL in a new tab. If it displays the desired image, use Chrome’s Save image as command.

A background may belong to a container rather than the object that looks like the image, so inspect nearby elements if the first selection does not show a URL. The CSS URL may also point to a sprite, a transformed asset, or a file used as part of a larger design rather than a standalone image matching what you see.

Use Network when the URL is missing or unclear

  1. Open DevTools and select Network.
  2. Reload the page while Network is open so the request log records the page load.
  3. Filter requests with an image extension such as png, jpg, jpeg, webp, gif or svg. You can also use the Img resource type.
  4. Select a likely request. Review its Preview, Response, Headers, Initiator and Timing details to identify the right file and understand how it was requested.
  5. Copy the request URL or open its Preview. Compare candidate filenames and dimensions; choose the largest suitable version you are authorized to use.

Network is often the clearest route when a page loads the image only after scrolling, generates it with JavaScript, or requests a CDN-transformed version. If several image requests appear, the one that corresponds to the visible thumbnail may not be the best available source. Inspect the candidate previews and dimensions rather than choosing based on filename alone.

Handle lazy-loaded, embedded and generated images

Lazy loading

A page may defer an image until it approaches the viewport. Scroll the target into view, then watch Network for a new request. In Elements, also look for attributes such as data-src or data-lazy-src, or for a URL in a <source> element. If the image still does not appear, reload with DevTools open and check the request log again.

Responsive versions

Responsive markup can offer several files through srcset or <picture>. A candidate may be selected for a particular viewport or pixel density. Compare the available dimensions with the size you need: a larger source may be appropriate for a high-resolution use, but the largest file is not automatically the right choice for every purpose.

blob: and data: URLs

A blob: address is a browser-local object URL. It may stop working when pasted into another browser context or after the page closes. If you encounter one, use the site’s own download control, or capture the rendered result when that is permitted. A data: URL embeds image bytes in the markup; it may open directly as an image, which you can save if the page and the image’s rights allow it.

Canvas output

A canvas can display a rendered image without exposing an ordinary original-image URL in the DOM. There may be no source file to open. A screenshot or a site-provided export can preserve the visible result, but it may differ from the source asset in resolution or content.

Capture a rendered image with Chrome

If you need a copy of what a particular DOM image looks like on the page rather than its original file, Chrome has a built-in node screenshot action. Inspect the image, right-click the image node in the Elements tree and choose Capture node screenshot. Chrome saves the screenshot to downloads. This is a rendered capture; it is not a promise that you have obtained the original image or its full source resolution.

This method is useful when the page has assembled or displayed an image in a way that makes its source URL inconvenient to retrieve. It is not the same as downloading the asset, and it does not change the image’s reuse rights.

Fix common problems

The copied URL shows HTML or an access-denied page

The image request may depend on cookies, a referrer, authentication or a signed URL. Use the request shown in Network while the page is loaded. Do not remove or work around access controls; use an available site download or request permission if you do not have access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

I found only a small thumbnail

Check srcset and <picture> candidates, then inspect Network requests and their dimensions. A larger candidate might load only after opening a gallery or changing the page’s zoom or image view.

No image request appears in Network

  • Make sure Network recording is on and reload with DevTools open.
  • Clear the filter in case it is hiding the request, then try the Img resource type or an extension such as webp.
  • Scroll the image into view to trigger lazy loading.
  • Inspect the element’s CSS for a background image, and check whether the image is in an iframe.

The image is inside an iframe

Inspect the frame’s document and filter Network by the relevant domain. Chrome’s Resources view organizes resources by domain and identifies iframe browsing contexts, which can help distinguish the frame’s assets from the main page’s.

Right-click is disabled

Use the selector picker or open DevTools and inspect the page through Elements or Network. A disabled context menu does not prevent inspection, but successfully finding an image URL does not grant permission to download it for any purpose or to publish it elsewhere.

Check image rights before using the file

Locating and downloading an image are technical steps, not evidence that you may republish it. Before using an image in a post, product, advertisement or other publication, check the page’s license, the creator’s terms and any stock-library restrictions, as well as the law that applies to your use. If those terms do not clearly allow your intended use, ask the rights holder or choose an asset with suitable permission.
