Low available memory is one possible cause, but the message does not identify a single fault. Close unnecessary tabs and apps, pause downloads, disable extensions you do not need, update and restart Edge, then determine whether the same page fails elsewhere. If those checks do not help on Windows, Edge Repair is the next broad fix.
What “Not responding” actually tells you
The warning describes a symptom: Edge has stopped responding to input or has taken too long to finish an operation. It does not prove that Edge itself is damaged. Microsoft lists several possible boundaries for the problem:
- Your computer may be short of available memory while running tabs, applications, extensions and other programs.
- A particular website may be overloaded, broken or serving content that Edge cannot finish loading.
- Your network, modem or router may be preventing the page from completing.
- An extension, cached file, outdated browser build, security product or malware may be interfering.
There is no official percentage showing how often any one cause is responsible. Treat the message as a prompt to isolate the failing layer rather than as a diagnosis.
Do these low-risk checks first
- Reduce the load. Close every tab except the affected page, quit other applications, pause active downloads and remove extensions you do not need for the test.
- Reload once. If the page responds, continue using it briefly to see whether the hang returns.
- Restart Edge. Close all Edge windows and open the browser again.
- Retest with one page. Do not reopen all your previous tabs until you know whether the problem is gone.
These actions are reversible and address the memory pressure Microsoft identifies without deleting browsing data.

Find out whether the fault is Edge, one site or the network
Compare the same address in another browser
Open the exact URL in another installed browser. If it also fails there, Edge is unlikely to be the only cause. Restart the modem or router and try again. If the page continues to fail in multiple browsers, contact the website owner; the site or your connection may be responsible.
If the page works elsewhere but Edge freezes, continue with Edge-focused steps. A failure limited to one URL is different from a failure affecting every site.
Use the scope of the failure as a decision clue
| What you observe | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Only one page freezes in Edge | Compare that page in another browser, then clear Edge’s cached files if the display is incomplete. |
| Many pages freeze while several apps and tabs are open | Close programs, pause downloads and disable unneeded extensions before retesting. |
| The same page fails in every browser | Restart the modem/router and contact the site owner if the failure persists. |
| Edge alone fails across unrelated sites | Update and restart Edge; if necessary, use Edge Repair on Windows. |
Update Edge and restart it
Out-of-date browser files can be corrected by an update. In Edge, select Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then Help and feedback, and About Microsoft Edge. You can also enter edge://settings/help in the address bar.
- Open the About page and let Edge check for an update.
- Install the update if one is offered.
- Choose Restart when Edge asks you to finish applying it.
Windows Update can also deliver Edge updates. On a metered connection, downloading an update may use chargeable data. Work or school administrators may control updates or hide update controls; contact the administrator instead of trying to bypass those policies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsClear cached files only when the symptom fits
Cached files help pages load faster, but a damaged or stale cache can contribute to a page-display problem. Clearing the cache is not the same as erasing every category of browsing data.
- In Edge, open History, then choose Open history page.
- Select Delete browsing data.
- Set the time range to All time.
- Select Browsing history and Cached images and files.
- Clear the data and restart Edge before testing the page again.
Do not select every available category automatically. Clearing all browsing data is a broader action that can remove additional information you may want to keep. Use it only when you understand the categories selected and the effect on your browsing session.
Check security software and scan the device
Microsoft recommends scanning relevant Windows systems for malware and keeping third-party security software up to date. A scan is especially appropriate when Edge’s behavior changed suddenly, redirects appear, or other applications are acting abnormally. Let the security product finish, remove anything it identifies according to its instructions, restart Windows and test Edge again.
Rank #2
A security scan does not establish that malware caused the original warning. It is a way to rule out a serious competing cause before you make broader browser changes.
Repair Edge on Windows
When updating, restarting and targeted cache clearing have not solved an Edge-only problem, use the built-in Repair command. Microsoft says Repair should not affect browser data or settings.
- Close every Edge window.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge, open its menu and select Modify.
- Approve the prompt if Windows asks for permission.
- Select Repair and keep the computer connected to the internet until the process finishes.
- Open Edge and repeat the test with the smallest possible set of tabs.
If Modify is missing, the computer may be managed by an organization. Ask the IT administrator to perform or authorize the repair. Do not assume that a missing button means Edge is permanently broken.
What about Reset?
Windows provides a general app-repair framework in which Reset may appear when Repair is unavailable or ineffective. The Edge-specific guidance establishes the Repair procedure, but it does not establish which Edge data or settings a Reset preserves. If Windows offers Reset, read the on-screen consequences carefully and back up anything important before accepting it. Do not promise yourself that Reset is harmless.
Troubleshoot by the way Edge fails
Edge freezes immediately after launch
- Close other programs and retry with no restored tabs.
- Disable extensions you do not need, then reopen Edge.
- Check
edge://settings/helpfor an update. - If the browser remains unusable on Windows, close it and use the Repair path.
Only a page with video, forms or sign-in controls hangs
Test the same address in another browser. If it works there, clear only Edge’s browsing history and cached files as described above, then retry. If it fails everywhere, treat it as a site or network issue and contact the site owner after restarting your router.
The problem returns when many tabs are restored
Close all but the affected tab and pause downloads. Reopen tabs gradually instead of restoring the entire previous session at once. If the warning appears only under that heavier workload, memory pressure is a plausible explanation, but the message still does not prove that memory is the sole cause.
Edge freezes after an update
Restart Windows and test again with extensions disabled. If the issue persists, use Edge Repair on Windows. Keep notes about the update timing and the pages affected so an organization’s administrator or Microsoft support can reproduce the pattern.

- Do not buy RAM solely because of this message. A memory upgrade requires evidence that the device is actually constrained and that the upgrade is compatible.
- Do not erase all browsing data as a reflex. Start with the narrower cache selection when the symptom is a display problem.
- Do not assume a virus. Scan when appropriate, but the warning also occurs with ordinary memory, site and network problems.
- Do not force changes on a managed computer. Missing update or repair controls may be intentional policy.
When the warning keeps returning
Keep a short record of the conditions: the URL, whether other browsers fail, how many tabs and applications were open, whether a download was running, the Edge version shown on edge://settings/help, and what changed after each step. This separates a repeatable site problem from a browser-wide problem and gives an administrator or support technician actionable information.
If Edge continues to hang across unrelated sites after reducing the workload, updating, targeted cache clearing, a malware scan and Windows Repair, escalate with that record. The remaining cause could involve Windows, a security product, the network or device-specific hardware; the “Not responding” message alone cannot distinguish them.

If your goal is to capture a website rather than interact with it in Edge, ScreenshotNeo provides a direct screenshot API. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and options. A basic request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom JavaScript and CSS, clicks before capture, selector hiding, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.
There is a free allowance of 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing provides two months free, and every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I follow the repair steps on macOS?
The Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Modify > Repair path is for Windows. On macOS, use the cross-platform checks—reduce tabs and extensions, compare another browser, update Edge, restart it and clear only the cache categories that match the symptom—then consult your organization’s administrator if the Mac is managed.
Does “Not responding” prove Edge has crashed permanently?
No. It is a temporary unresponsive-state message. Whether the cause is memory pressure, one website, the network or Edge itself can only be determined by comparing the scope of the failure and testing the steps above.
