Press PrtSc, open Paint or another image-capable app, and press Ctrl+V. For a file saved automatically, press Windows+PrtScn and check PicturesScreenshots. If your keyboard has no dedicated key, Microsoft documents Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar for some devices. The steps below cover Windows 10 and Windows 11 and separate a missing file, a changed shortcut, and a possible keyboard problem.
What Print Screen is supposed to do
Microsoft describes the ordinary Print Screen action as a full-screen image placed in the clipboard. It is not necessarily a file-creation command. The key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn, and is commonly near the upper-right of a full-size keyboard. On compact keyboards it may share another key or be absent entirely. See Microsoft’s explanations of copying window or screen contents and the Print Screen shortcut.
That produces three common “failures” that are not the same problem:
- The capture worked, but no file was created: paste the clipboard image with Ctrl+V.
- The key opens a selection interface: Windows may be configured to launch screen snipping instead of performing the traditional clipboard action.
- The key does nothing: the keyboard may require a function-layer press, lack a Print Screen key, or have a physical or layout issue.
Use the comparison below to choose the path that matches the result you need.

Choose the capture path that matches your goal
| Method | What it does | Where to look for the result |
|---|---|---|
| Print Screen / PrtSc | Captures the entire screen to the clipboard. | Paste with Ctrl+V in Paint, a document, or another image-capable app. |
| Windows+Shift+S | Opens the Snipping Tool overlay so you can select a rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen capture. | The Snipping Tool interface lets you copy or save the capture. |
| Windows+PrtScn | Captures the full screen and saves it as a file. | PicturesScreenshots, according to Microsoft’s shortcut guidance. |
| Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar | Microsoft documents this as an alternative on some devices without a dedicated PrtScn button. | Use the resulting clipboard or file behavior shown by that device. |
| Snipping Tool app | Provides capture modes plus editor controls. | Use its explicit save action or copy the image. |

Fix Print Screen step by step
1. Identify the actual key
- Inspect the upper-right area of the keyboard for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn.
- On a laptop or compact keyboard, look for a shared legend or a function-layer indicator. The required combination is model-specific; do not assume that one Fn combination works on every laptop.
- If there is no dedicated key, try Microsoft’s documented Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar alternative. It is intended for some devices without a PrtScn button, not as a universal shortcut.
2. Test the clipboard before looking for a file
- Press Print Screen once.
- Open Paint, Word, an email composer, or another application that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl+V.
If an image appears, the key worked. Save it from that application. The absence of a new file in File Explorer does not prove that capture failed, because the standard action is a clipboard capture.
3. Use the saved-file shortcut
- Press Windows+PrtScn. On a shared-key keyboard, include the function-layer key required by that model.
- Open File Explorer and browse to
PicturesScreenshots. - Sort by date if several screenshots exist.
Microsoft lists this shortcut as a full-screen capture saved in that folder. If this works while a single Print Screen press does not, the evidence points to a difference in key handling or configured behavior, not a definitive diagnosis of the keyboard.

4. Open Snipping Tool directly
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snipping from the overlay.
- Select the area or window.
- Use the notification or Snipping Tool editor to copy the image or choose Save.
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions describe these capture modes and the copy/save controls. This is a useful independent test because it bypasses the physical Print Screen key.
5. Check whether Print Screen was assigned to screen snipping
Windows can be configured so that the Print Screen button opens screen snipping. Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review the Print Screen option. If it is enabled, pressing the key may show the snipping overlay rather than silently placing a full-screen image in the clipboard. Microsoft documents this behavior in its Windows keyboard shortcuts guidance.
6. Check the keyboard and layout only after software tests
If Windows+Shift+S works but every Print Screen combination fails, inspect the keyboard legend, function-layer state, and keyboard layout. Test the key outside the application where you first noticed the problem. A physically missing or faulty key is one possible explanation, but the documented checks do not justify replacing a keyboard before testing the alternate shortcuts. An external keyboard with a clearly labeled Print Screen key is a limited hardware remedy for that situation; it will not correct a Windows setting or clipboard misunderstanding.

Where the screenshot went
Clipboard capture
A single Print Screen press can leave the image only in the clipboard. Paste immediately with Ctrl+V into Paint or another image-capable application, then save it using that application’s save command.
Automatically saved capture
For a file created by the Windows shortcut, check PicturesScreenshots. Snipping Tool also has an explicit save action, so use that action rather than expecting every snip to appear in the folder automatically.

OneDrive backup
Microsoft says the former “Save screenshots to OneDrive” setting is no longer available. To back up screenshots, include the Pictures folder in OneDrive. This changes the backup destination; it is not evidence that the capture itself failed. See Microsoft’s current OneDrive screenshot guidance.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely distinction | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing appears in File Explorer | The image may be in the clipboard. | Paste with Ctrl+V, or use Windows+PrtScn for the documented saved-file path. |
| A selection overlay appears | Print Screen may be assigned to screen snipping. | Use the overlay, or review Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. |
| Windows+Shift+S works, Print Screen does not | The built-in snipping path works, while the physical key or its configuration remains suspect. | Check key labeling, Fn-layer behavior, and keyboard layout before considering hardware. |
| Print Screen key is absent | The device may be designed without a dedicated PrtScn button. | Try Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar, which Microsoft documents for some such devices, or use Snipping Tool. |
| Windows+PrtScn does not save where expected | The shortcut may not have been recognized, or the keyboard may require a model-specific function-layer press. | Confirm the exact key combination, then test Windows+Shift+S and the clipboard method. |
| OneDrive does not show a screenshot setting | The old setting has been removed. | Include the Pictures folder in OneDrive if backup is required. |
Limits of this first-pass diagnosis
Microsoft’s support pages document the Windows 10 and Windows 11 shortcuts, Snipping Tool behavior, clipboard handling, and OneDrive folder backup. They do not provide a complete diagnosis for every third-party key-remapping utility, remote-desktop session, keyboard firmware, or application that restricts screen capture. If the problem appears only in one managed or remote environment, check that environment’s support guidance after confirming that Windows shortcuts work locally.

If you need a repeatable screenshot of a web page rather than a snapshot of your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/orientation/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom JavaScript and CSS, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector or delay or network-idle waits, blocked ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable-TTL caching, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work to ease migration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this guide cover every reason a Print Screen key can fail?
No. It covers the Windows 10 and Windows 11 behaviors documented by Microsoft. Third-party remapping software, remote sessions, firmware, and application-specific restrictions may require separate support.
Should I replace my keyboard immediately?
No. First test Ctrl+V, Windows+PrtScn, Windows+Shift+S, the Accessibility setting, and any model-specific function layer. Hardware replacement is reasonable only when the key is physically absent or remains faulty after those checks.
