Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The quickest way to record a browser is to use a recorder that can capture a tab, window, or entire screen. For a guided workflow, Loom’s Chrome extension lets you choose Full Screen, Window, or Current Tab, add microphone and camera input, then produces a shareable recording. Firefox and Safari users cannot launch that Chrome extension directly; use a supported Chromium browser or Loom’s desktop app instead. If you are building your own recorder, Chrome’s getDisplayMedia() API provides the underlying tab, window, or screen-selection dialog.
Choose the right recording method
Your choice depends on what must appear in the video and where the recording should live after you stop.
| Method | Capture area | Audio and camera | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Loom Chrome extension | Current tab, one window, or full screen | Microphone and optional camera | Fast tutorials, demos, and hosted sharing | Runs from Chrome or Chromium browsers; full compatibility outside Chrome is not guaranteed |
| Loom desktop app | Full screen, a window, or camera; can include system audio | Microphone, camera, and system audio | Demonstrations that move between browser windows and other applications | Documented for macOS and Windows, not Linux or ChromeOS |
Chrome getDisplayMedia() |
User-selected tab, window, or screen | Microphone and display audio when offered by the browser | Developers who need a custom or local workflow | Requires browser permission and your own recording, storage, and editing code |
Before recording, close private tabs, disable notifications, and decide whether the video should show one tab or everything on your display. A tab capture is safer for a focused tutorial; a window or full-screen capture is necessary when the demonstration crosses applications.
Record a browser with Loom’s Chrome extension
1. Install and open the recorder
- Install the Loom extension in Chrome. It can also be installed in Chromium browsers such as Edge, Opera, and Brave, although Loom does not guarantee full compatibility outside Chrome.
- Open the extension’s recorder from the browser toolbar and sign in if prompted.
- Grant access to the microphone or camera only if your recording needs them. You can record the screen without a face camera.
2. Select what to share
Choose one of Loom’s capture modes:
- Current Tab: records the active browser tab. This is the least likely mode to expose another window or notification.
- Window: records a selected application window, useful when the browser is not maximized or when you want the browser chrome visible.
- Full Screen: records the selected display and everything shown on it. Use this when a workflow moves between applications.
Check the preview carefully. Selecting the wrong display or window is the most common cause of a recording that omits part of the demonstration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
3. Configure narration and face camera
Select the microphone you intend to use, then speak a short test sentence. A USB microphone is an optional upgrade if your laptop microphone is noisy or distant. Turn the camera on for a face-cam bubble; a USB webcam is useful when the built-in camera is poor. Loom’s Screen and Camera mode places your camera alongside the screen recording.
4. Start, stop, and review
Start the recording and wait through Loom’s three-second countdown. A red stop control indicates that capture is active. When you stop, Loom opens the recording for viewing, editing, and sharing. Watch the first and last few seconds before sending the link: they reveal whether the correct tab, microphone, and camera were selected.
Record Firefox or Safari
Loom’s Chrome extension cannot be launched from Firefox or Safari. You have two practical choices:
- Open the page you need to demonstrate in a supported Chromium browser and launch the extension there.
- Use Loom’s desktop app, which captures a full screen, a window, a camera, and system audio on Mac and Windows.
The desktop app is the better fit when the demonstration moves between browser windows, a terminal, or another desktop application. Loom’s compatibility documentation does not list Linux or ChromeOS support for that app, so users on those systems need a browser-based or other locally available recorder.

Capture a browser with Chrome’s built-in API
For a custom recorder, Chrome documents navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({ audio: true, video: true }). Calling it opens a permission dialog in which the user chooses a tab, window, or screen. Chrome keeps a visible indication that capture is active, so a page cannot silently record the display.
Minimal runnable example
<!doctype html>
<button id="start">Start recording</button>
<button id="stop" disabled>Stop and download</button>
<script>
let recorder;
let chunks = [];
const start = document.querySelector('#start');
const stop = document.querySelector('#stop');
start.onclick = async () => {
try {
const stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({
video: true,
audio: true
});
chunks = [];
recorder = new MediaRecorder(stream, { mimeType: 'video/webm' });
recorder.ondataavailable = event => {
if (event.data.size) chunks.push(event.data);
};
recorder.onstop = () => {
const blob = new Blob(chunks, { type: 'video/webm' });
const url = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.href = url;
link.download = 'browser-recording.webm';
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(url);
stream.getTracks().forEach(track => track.stop());
};
recorder.start();
start.disabled = true;
stop.disabled = false;
stream.getVideoTracks()[0].addEventListener('ended', () => {
if (recorder.state !== 'inactive') recorder.stop();
});
} catch (error) {
console.error('Screen capture was not started:', error);
}
};
stop.onclick = () => {
if (recorder && recorder.state !== 'inactive') recorder.stop();
start.disabled = false;
stop.disabled = true;
};
</script>
Save this as an HTML file and open it in a browser context that permits display capture. Press Start recording, choose a tab, window, or screen in the permission dialog, and press Stop and download when finished. The example creates a local WebM file; it does not upload or edit the video.
Add microphone narration
getDisplayMedia() captures display audio only when the browser and selected surface offer it. To mix in a microphone, request a second stream and combine both sources with the Web Audio API before sending the result to MediaRecorder:
const display = await navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({video: true, audio: true});
const microphone = await navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia({audio: true});
const context = new AudioContext();
const destination = context.createMediaStreamDestination();
context.createMediaStreamSource(display).connect(destination);
context.createMediaStreamSource(microphone).connect(destination);
const combined = new MediaStream([
display.getVideoTracks()[0],
...destination.stream.getAudioTracks()
]);
const recorder = new MediaRecorder(combined);
Handle microphone permission separately and stop both streams when recording ends. If you do not need system or tab audio, request only the microphone and the display video to reduce confusion.

Record across page navigation in an extension
Chrome also provides tabCapture for extensions that need a tab’s audio and video. If capture starts from a content script, navigating the page can end the recording. Chrome recommends an offscreen document for recording that must survive navigation. This is an extension architecture issue, not a fix that can be added to a simple page script.
Improve audio, camera, and picture quality
- Microphone: select the intended input before starting. A USB microphone can reduce laptop fan noise and improve speech clarity.
- Camera: use a USB webcam when the built-in camera is soft, poorly positioned, or too dark.
- Notifications: turn on your operating system’s do-not-disturb mode before choosing Window or Full Screen.
- Pointer and pacing: move the cursor deliberately, pause after each click, and keep the page at a readable zoom level.
- Storage: local recordings consume disk space while the browser assembles the file. End very long sessions in chapters if your recorder or machine becomes sluggish.
Privacy and security checks
Screen capture can include passwords, private messages, customer data, browser extensions, and notifications. Use Current Tab when possible, hide sensitive fields before capture, and review the complete file before uploading or sharing it. A hosted workflow such as Loom is convenient for sharing, while the custom example above keeps the WebM file on your device until you choose to move it.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a static image of a web page rather than a video, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It is not a video recorder, but it is useful for documentation, visual regression checks, and capturing a page state without configuring browser permissions.
ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Every plan includes the full feature set, including full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, custom headers and cookies, user-agent and authorization values, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration.

The recording has no sound
Confirm that the selected microphone is connected and that the browser or operating system has microphone permission. For tab or system sound, verify that you selected a share option offering audio in the display dialog. A display stream and a microphone stream are separate sources in custom code; request and mix both if narration is required.
Recommended Free Tools
The wrong tab or display was recorded
Stop and restart, then choose Current Tab, the exact Window, or the intended display in the permission dialog. Full Screen records whatever appears on that display, including notifications and application switches.
Best Value
The camera bubble is missing
Enable the camera before starting and check that another application is not holding it. In a custom recorder, camera capture requires a separate getUserMedia({video: true}) request; getDisplayMedia() alone records the display, not your face.
The extension will not start
Chrome is the supported launch browser for Loom’s extension. On Firefox or Safari, open the page in a supported Chromium browser or use the desktop app. If the browser is managed by an organization, an administrator policy may also block screen capture or extension installation.
Navigation stops a custom recording
A content-script capture can end when the tab navigates. For an extension that must continue across navigations, move recording logic into an offscreen document as Chrome recommends.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I record only one browser tab?
Yes. Loom’s Current Tab mode and Chrome’s display-capture dialog both let you select a single tab, which avoids exposing other windows.
Does screen recording automatically include browser audio?
No. Audio availability depends on the selected surface and browser. Select a share option that offers tab or system audio, and request a microphone separately for narration.
Can I keep recording while the page navigates?
A simple content-script capture may stop on navigation. Chrome recommends an offscreen document for an extension that must record across navigations.
