Choose the right screenshot method
A screenshot extension is useful when you need to capture a page longer than the visible window, mark up an image, redact information or export directly to PDF. The important distinction is whether the tool captures only the viewport, scrolls and stitches a full page, or can target a nested scrolling panel such as a dashboard. Sticky headers, lazy-loaded images, animations and very long pages can affect stitching quality, so inspect the result before sharing it.

Firefox Screenshots: the no-install choice
Mozilla says Firefox Screenshots can capture “visible parts of web pages, or even full web pages” and lets you copy or save the image. Open the page, right-click an empty area and choose Take Screenshot (or use the browser’s screenshot command), then select the full-page option and save or copy the result. This is the sensible default when you use Firefox and do not need extension-specific editing.
Do not describe this as extension-local processing: Mozilla’s support material discusses event-data collection under the Firefox Browser Privacy Notice. If a page contains personal or regulated information, review your organization’s Firefox telemetry settings as well as the page’s content.
Microsoft Edge Screenshot Tool: capture and mark up
Edge’s documented tool can “capture a full page or a selected area—including long or moving webpages—then add comments or markup using pen or touch before copying or saving your screenshot.” Open the Settings and more menu, choose Screenshot (the label may appear as Web capture in some releases), select Full page or a region, add markup, and copy or save the image.

Microsoft cautions that availability and functionality can vary by device, market and browser version. If the command is missing, update Edge and check the menu’s customization options rather than installing an extension immediately.
Best Chrome extensions
GoFullPage
GoFullPage is designed for one-click full-page scrolling capture. Its Chrome listing describes PNG, JPEG and PDF export. The listing’s changelog includes version 8.5 on March 19, 2025, plus Manifest V3 updates in 2024, indicating ongoing maintenance at that point. Store limits and premium features can change, so verify the current listing before relying on a particular export or workflow.
Use it for long articles, documentation and simple handoff images. After capture, check the top and bottom for duplicated sticky navigation, missing lazy-loaded images or seams around animated content.

The Chrome Web Store listing describes an integrated editor with arrows, shapes, text, blur or pixelation, redaction, OCR, crop and filters. It also advertises PNG, JPG and PDF export, clipboard copying, no sign-up and no watermark. Those are publisher-listed features, not an independent performance test; confirm that the functions you need are present in the current release.
This is the more practical choice when a screenshot must explain a bug or hide an email address before it leaves your team. Redaction should be applied before exporting, and you should zoom in to confirm that sensitive text cannot be recovered from the underlying image.
OpenCapture
OpenCapture states that it renders, crops and annotates images locally in the browser and that core capture workflows upload nothing. It supports Chrome, Edge and Firefox, with full-page capture, region cropping, annotation and export at no cost without an account. That makes it a strong fit for confidential dashboards or internal documentation.

OpenScreenShot is a free, open-source project that describes no account, no telemetry and local capture/editing. It supports Chromium browsers and Firefox. The repository notes that recording is currently Chrome-only, while screenshots, annotation, history and image/PDF export work in Firefox. Release support can change, so check the project repository or current store listing before standardizing on it.
How to take a full-page screenshot in Chrome
- Open the exact URL and wait for the page’s main content to finish loading. Expand accordions or tabs whose content must appear in the image.
- Install one extension from the current Chrome Web Store listing, checking its publisher, permissions, update date and export claims.
- Click the extension button and choose its full-page or scrolling-capture command. Keep the tab active while it scrolls; switching tabs can interrupt capture.
- Wait for the result to open in the extension editor. Inspect the header, footer, sticky elements, lazy images and embedded frames.
- Crop unnecessary browser or page material, annotate or redact sensitive data, and export PNG, JPG, PDF or clipboard output as appropriate.
- Open the exported file independently before sending it. Confirm its dimensions, page breaks, readable text and absence of private information.
Privacy and permissions checklist
- Prefer Firefox or Edge’s built-in tools when they meet your needs; they avoid adding another extension.
- For sensitive pages, favor tools that explicitly state local processing, such as OpenCapture or OpenScreenShot, and still inspect current permissions.
- Understand whether an extension can read page content, access all sites, modify data or communicate with external services. A full-page tool generally needs more access than a visible-area screenshot.
- Do not capture passwords, access tokens, customer records or private support tickets unless your policy permits it. Blur or redact before export, and delete temporary files from shared folders.
- Separate browser telemetry statements from extension-local claims. Firefox’s support material points to the Firefox Browser Privacy Notice; that is different from an extension promising local rendering.
Getting better results on difficult pages
Sticky headers and repeated elements
Fixed navigation bars may appear on every stitched segment. If the extension offers an option to hide an element, use it; otherwise temporarily disable the header with browser developer tools or capture a selected content container.
Lazy-loaded images
Scroll through the page once before capture so images load, or use an extension that waits while scrolling. A blank image area in the exported file usually means the page had not requested the asset yet.
Animations and moving pages
Pause videos, carousels and live dashboards where possible. A moving page can produce mismatched frames even when the extension itself is functioning correctly.

Nested scroll containers
A full-page command may capture the document but not an inner panel with its own scrollbar. Scroll the panel to the desired position and use a region capture, or check whether the extension supports selecting an element or container.
Very long pages
Long captures consume memory and can exceed an extension’s practical limits. Capture separate logical sections when a single image becomes unwieldy, or export to PDF if the recipient needs searchable pages rather than one enormous bitmap.
When a browser extension is the wrong tool
Extensions are interactive and convenient, but they depend on a live browser tab, page scripts and local permissions. They are less suitable for scheduled captures, server-side monitoring, bulk URLs, authenticated automation or a reproducible API pipeline. In those cases, use a screenshot service and pass only the URL and credentials your workflow requires.

The full-page command is missing
Update the browser, check the browser’s built-in screenshot menu, and confirm the extension is enabled for the current site. Enterprise policies or private-window restrictions can hide commands.
The capture stops halfway
Keep the tab active, disable conflicting extensions, close memory-heavy tabs and retry after allowing the page to finish loading. For an exceptionally long page, capture sections.
Images or text are missing
Scroll once to trigger lazy loading, wait for network activity to settle and retry. Content inside cross-origin frames may not be capturable by the extension.
The output contains repeated headers or seams
Hide fixed elements, pause animations and use a content-region capture. There is no universal stitching guarantee for moving or dynamically reflowing pages.

PDF pages break badly
Try a different paper size, orientation or margin setting, or export an image when exact visual layout matters. Verify the PDF in a separate viewer.
A privacy review rejects the extension
Use Firefox or Edge’s native tool, or choose a local-first project such as OpenCapture or OpenScreenShot after reviewing its current permissions and release notes.
