To capture a webpage in Chrome, install a screenshot extension, open the page, and choose a capture mode: the visible area for what is on screen now, a selected area for a specific section if the extension offers it, or full page to include content below the fold. Review the result before saving; full-page tools may scroll through and assemble multiple sections, so check for missing or repeated content.
Choose the right capture mode
“Screenshot the page” can mean two different things. A visible-area screenshot records the current browser viewport. A full-page screenshot aims to include the rest of the scrolling document, including content below the fold. Some extensions also offer a custom-area mode so you can capture a portion of the page.
- Visible area: Choose this when you need exactly what is currently in the browser window. It is usually the simplest option for a quick reference.
- Selected area: Use this when you need only a particular part of the page and the extension supports selecting a region.
- Full page: Choose this when you need a record of the entire scrolling page. The extension may scroll through the page and assemble the sections into one long image.
Chrome’s documented extension capture API is for capturing the visible area of a tab; it does not itself describe a one-shot capture of an entire scrolling document. Full-page capture is therefore an extension feature, not something to assume from Chrome’s basic visible-tab capture capability.
Capture a webpage with a Chrome extension
- Choose an extension. Find it in the Chrome Web Store. Before installing, read its listing, check the permissions it requests, and review its privacy information. Choose one that offers the capture mode and export format you need.
- Open the page. Navigate to the webpage you want to save and wait for the content you need to appear. For a full-page capture, consider whether important content loads only after scrolling or interaction.
- Start the capture. Click the extension’s toolbar icon, or use a keyboard shortcut if its listing documents one. Select visible-area, custom-area, or full-page capture as appropriate.
- Wait for processing. Full-page extensions may need time to scroll and assemble the page. Avoid navigating away while the capture is in progress.
- Inspect the result. Check the top, middle, and bottom of a long capture. Look for missing sections, repeated content, cut-off text, or layout changes before relying on it.
- Export or save. Use the format offered by the extension. Options vary; listings researched for this guide describe image and PDF exports, with one listing specifying PNG, JPG, and PDF.
Example: GoFullPage
GoFullPage’s Chrome Web Store listing describes starting a capture by clicking its icon or pressing Alt+Shift+P. It says the result opens in a new tab, where it can be downloaded as an image or PDF. These are the vendor’s listing details, not an independent test; check the current listing because shortcuts and features can change.

Example: Full Page Screen Capture
The Full Page Screen Capture listing describes full-page, visible-area, and custom-area modes, plus an editor with annotation and PNG, JPG, and PDF export. Treat those as listing claims and verify the current details in the store before installing.
Check the capture before using it
A saved image is only useful if it contains the content you intended to preserve. Full-page capture is not the same as simply saving the visible screen: the extension may have to move through the page and combine captures. That process can make a long page worth checking from end to end.
- Confirm the capture starts at the top and reaches the intended end of the page.
- Check for sections that appear twice or disappear between stitched sections.
- Look for text or images that were cut off, shifted, or obscured by sticky page elements.
- If the page uses embedded content or its own scrollable regions, verify that the specific content you need is present. An extension’s general support claim is not a guarantee for every page.
- Make sure the output type suits the next step: an image for a visual record, or PDF when the extension offers it and a document-style export is more useful.
Compare extensions by the details that matter
Capture modes and export options differ between extensions. Compare their current store listings rather than assuming every tool can do the same job.

Protect sensitive pages
A screenshot can contain more than the visible text: it may show account details, private messages, internal dashboards, or other sensitive information. Before capturing such a page, consider whether the extension’s permissions and privacy disclosures are acceptable for that content. Do not assume that a capture stays on your device unless the extension’s documentation establishes that.

For a sensitive page, also check the finished file before sharing it. Close or remove information that should not be disclosed, and use an approved capture method if the page is subject to workplace, client, or regulatory handling rules.

The result shows only what was on screen
You may have chosen visible-area capture rather than full-page capture, or the extension may not offer full-page mode. Start a new capture and choose the full-page option. Confirm that the extension’s current listing describes that capability.

The full-page image has gaps or repeated sections
Inspect the assembled image for stitching problems. If the extension offers another capture mode, try it and compare the result. Pages with embedded content or separate inner scroll areas can require special handling; check whether the extension specifically addresses the structure you need, and verify the output rather than relying on a general compatibility claim.
Some content is missing
Check whether the missing material appeared on the page before capture, including content that loads after scrolling or interaction. Return to the page, make the relevant content visible if needed, and capture again. If the content is inside an embedded frame or its own scrolling region, the extension may not include it as part of the main page capture.

Use the extension’s toolbar icon and check its current store listing or settings for the supported shortcut. Keyboard shortcuts may differ or be configurable; do not assume a shortcut from another extension applies.

Export and editor features vary by extension. Check the listing and the extension’s capture or export screen before depending on a particular format. The researched listings describe image and PDF options, but not every extension offers the same choices.
