On an iPhone, a full-page Safari capture is made from the normal screenshot preview: take a screenshot, open its thumbnail, choose Full Page, then use the save controls (usually Save PDF to Files). If Full Page is missing or the result is incomplete, Apple’s published instructions do not identify one universal cause or setting that fixes every case. Use the platform-specific checks below rather than assuming a particular website, browser setting or iOS version is responsible.
Use the documented iPhone workflow first
Apple’s Full Page feature is part of the iPhone screenshot editor. It is not a command inside Safari’s address bar or Share menu.
- Open the webpage in Safari and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Take a regular screenshot with your iPhone’s normal screenshot buttons. The button combination differs by iPhone model.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail that appears briefly in the lower-left corner.
- At the top of the editor, select Full Page. The preview should expand beyond the visible screen to include the rest of the webpage.
- Review the long preview, then use the save controls. Apple documents Save PDF to Files for a full-page capture.
The result of this route is a PDF, not a single tall PNG or JPEG. If you need an image file, you will need a different capture method.
Do not confuse Full Page with Safari’s Share and Markup PDF route
Safari also has a separate workflow for turning a webpage into a PDF through Share and Markup. That path is useful when your goal is an annotated or saved webpage PDF, but it is not the same control as Full Page in the screenshot editor. The exact button placement can vary with Safari’s tab layout.

Choose the screenshot route when you specifically want the iPhone screenshot editor’s long capture. Choose Share and Markup when you want Safari’s webpage-PDF workflow or need to annotate before saving. Trying to find Full Page inside the Share sheet will not make the screenshot option appear.
Why the option can be missing or the capture can be incomplete
Apple does not publish a complete failure-cause list
Apple’s procedural guidance explains how to start a Full Page capture and save it, but it does not provide a comprehensive list of reasons the control might be absent or why a particular page might stop early. Consequently, there is no documented universal switch to enable, nor a guaranteed restart or setting change that fixes every case.
Anecdotal reports are not a diagnosis
Individual user discussions sometimes describe an update followed by an inability to save a webpage as a PDF. Such a report is evidence of one person’s experience, not proof that a specific iOS release, site or setting causes all failures. Treat it as a prompt to collect details, not as a universal fix.

Separate a missing control from a bad output
- Missing control: the screenshot editor opens, but Full Page is not offered.
- Partial output: Full Page is available, but the saved document ends before the webpage does.
- Save problem: the long preview is present, but the file cannot be saved where you expect.
These symptoms require different evidence. Record which one you have before changing anything.
iPhone and iPad troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the context. Make sure the page is open in Safari and that you took a normal device screenshot rather than using a third-party screenshot command.
- Open the thumbnail immediately. The Full Page control is in the screenshot preview. If the thumbnail disappeared, take another screenshot and tap it before it vanishes.
- Check the tab shown in the editor. The long-capture option is associated with webpage screenshots. If you are capturing another app or a non-page surface, the control may not be offered.
- Try the alternate PDF workflow for a PDF goal. In Safari, use Share, then the webpage’s Markup and save controls. Tab-layout changes can move these buttons.
- Inspect the output before leaving the editor. Scroll through the long preview. If it is already truncated there, the problem is capture completeness; if the preview is complete but the file is wrong, focus on the save step.
- Document the case. Note the iPhone or iPad model, iOS or iPadOS version, Safari version if known, exact URL, and whether the symptom is a missing control or partial output.
The available Apple guidance does not establish a single setting to change when these checks fail. Avoid presenting a restart, a particular site setting or an operating-system update as a guaranteed cure.
What to do on a Mac
Do not follow the iPhone screenshot-preview instructions on macOS. Apple’s Mac guidance describes webpage saving through File > Save As, with two relevant formats:

If you need a visual, paginated capture on a Mac, a Safari extension is an optional fallback. The App Store listing for one such extension describes full-page and visible-area capture with PNG and PDF export. Its developer advises checking that the extension is activated, granting the permissions it requests, and fully quitting and reopening Safari. The listing also acknowledges that some sites may still require site-specific troubleshooting, so treat an extension as an alternative rather than a guaranteed fix.

The response is not an image
Check the HTTP response headers and body before saving blindly. X-Page-Verdict tells you how the page was classified and X-Billed tells you whether the request counted. A bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load or cache hit can therefore be distinguished from a clean billed capture.

The target page is wrong or the request fails immediately
Verify that access_key is present and URL-encode the target URL, as the cURL example does. In Python, pass the URL in the params dictionary; in Node.js, build it with URLSearchParams. Keep a 90-second timeout in Python for slow pages and inspect the returned status before writing the bytes to disk.
Dynamic content is missing
Use a wait-for-selector, delay or network-idle condition, and enable full-page capture so lazy images can load. If a banner or modal blocks the page, use the consent and popup cleanup options or hide a specific selector. For pages that require authentication, provide the appropriate cookies, headers or Authorization value.

Review the cache setting and choose a TTL that matches your freshness requirement. Cache hits are identified in the response and are not billed.
When to escalate an individual Safari case
If the documented paths still fail, give support a reproducible record: device model, operating-system version, Safari version if known, exact URL, screenshot of the editor, and whether Full Page is missing or the preview is truncated. That information is more useful than a general statement that “Safari screenshots do not work,” and the published Apple material does not justify claiming a single cause without it.
