For a local Linux desktop, use the screenshot command that matches your desktop and display server. On an X11 session, gnome-screenshot is a straightforward choice for full-screen, window, area, clipboard, and delayed captures. For a repeatable X11 script, scrot is compact; KDE users can use Spectacle. These commands capture a graphical display that is available to the session—they do not, by themselves, make a headless SSH session able to see a desktop.
Choose a command for your desktop and capture task
First decide whether you need a still image of the local desktop, an interactive selection, an unattended script, or a screenshot of a web page. The Linux utilities below capture a screen or window exposed through a graphical display server. Their behavior is not interchangeable across X11 and Wayland.
| Need | Use | Best fit and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| GNOME desktop: full screen, window, area, clipboard, or delay | gnome-screenshot |
Desktop-integrated command with options for these capture modes; the cited manual documents its X11-era command options. Debian GNOME Screenshot manual |
| Small, repeatable X11 capture or output to a pipeline | scrot |
Script-oriented utility with selection, window, delay, format and quality options, and standard-output support. Debian scrot manual |
| Capture followed by image processing | magick import |
Captures all or part of an X server screen or a selected window, then saves in a format ImageMagick supports. ImageMagick import documentation |
| KDE Plasma command-line or background capture | spectacle |
KDE documents command-line options and background operation for scripted captures. KDE Spectacle documentation |
| Interactive selection with annotation | flameshot |
A terminal launch starts its interactive workflow; Linux installation routes include distribution packages, AppImage, and Flathub. Flameshot Linux installation documentation |
If you are not sure which display server your desktop session uses, check your desktop’s session information before relying on an X11-oriented command. A utility working in one session does not establish that it works with every Wayland compositor. If a command yields a blank image on Wayland, use the screenshot facility integrated with your desktop or compositor and consult that compositor’s documentation rather than assuming there is a universal command.
Use GNOME Screenshot for common captures
Run these commands from a terminal in the graphical session. The examples save PNG files under ~/Pictures; ensure that directory exists and that your user can write to it. The options and capture modes below are documented by Debian’s GNOME Screenshot manual.

Capture the whole screen
gnome-screenshot --file ~/Pictures/full.png
This requests a full-screen capture and writes it to the named file. If you want a different filename or directory, replace the path. Use a quoted path if it contains spaces, for example --file "$HOME/Pictures/my screen.png".
Capture the active window or choose a region
gnome-screenshot --window --file ~/Pictures/window.png
gnome-screenshot --area --file ~/Pictures/area.png
The first command captures the active window. The second starts an area-selection capture so you can choose a rectangle. These are interactive actions: the terminal command starts the operation, but you still select or focus the target as requested by the desktop.
Copy a screenshot to the clipboard
gnome-screenshot --clipboard
This sends the capture to the clipboard rather than naming an output file. You can then paste it into an application that accepts images. Clipboard integration depends on the active desktop session; if the image is not available to paste, check the desktop’s screenshot and clipboard facilities.
Wait before capturing
gnome-screenshot --delay=5 --file ~/Pictures/delayed.png
The delay gives you time to open a menu or arrange a window before the screenshot is taken. The documented example uses five seconds. Delay is useful for a planned capture, but it does not automate choosing an area or guarantee that a transient menu stays open.

Use scrot for scriptable X11 screenshots
scrot is a command-line capture utility that uses imlib2. Install it through your Linux distribution’s package manager, then run it inside an available X11 session. Its manual documents file output, interactive rectangle selection, delays, multiple image formats, quality controls, window capture, and image data sent to standard output.
Save a full-screen or selected-area image
scrot ~/Pictures/full.png
scrot -s ~/Pictures/area.png
The first command saves a capture to the file path. The -s option selects a rectangle interactively. Because selection waits for user action, it is not a suitable unattended command unless the selection behavior is handled separately.
Add a delay or write image data to standard output
scrot -d 5 ~/Pictures/delayed.png
scrot -
-d 5 waits five seconds before capturing. The single hyphen requests image data on standard output, which can be useful when another program in a pipeline consumes the image. The receiving program must understand the image bytes; do not treat binary screenshot output as ordinary terminal text.
Scrot supports more than PNG, and its manual describes format and quality controls. Consult the installed version’s manual for exact flags before adding them to automation, since available options and package versions can vary by distribution.

Use ImageMagick when capture is part of image processing
ImageMagick’s import tool captures some or all of an X server screen and saves the image. The documented interactive form can capture an area or window, while selecting the root window captures the whole X server screen.
magick import ~/Pictures/capture.png
magick import -window root ~/Pictures/full.png
The first command invokes interactive selection. The second names the root window to capture the full X server screen. This is a useful route when the next step is conversion, resizing, or annotation with ImageMagick rather than opening a separate capture application. It is specifically documented for X-server capture, so do not assume it will capture a Wayland desktop.
KDE and annotation-focused alternatives
KDE Spectacle
KDE’s Spectacle supports command-line options and a background mode intended for captures without showing the GUI or requiring user interaction. Use the options documented for the Spectacle version installed on your system; the KDE documentation is the appropriate reference for its invocation and mode details. This makes it the most natural starting point for a KDE Plasma workflow, but does not imply that its options match GNOME Screenshot or scrot.
Flameshot
Launch flameshot from a terminal when you want an interactive selection-and-annotation workflow. The official Linux documentation covers distribution packages, AppImage execution, and Flathub installation. Flameshot is a graphical tool, not a replacement for an unattended file-producing command when your script must run without a person selecting an area.

Save a screenshot from SSH: what must be available
A terminal connection alone is not a display. The cited command documentation establishes local graphical capture, not that a headless SSH session can capture a desktop that is absent or inaccessible. If you are connected remotely, the command needs access to the intended graphical session and its display server; being logged in over SSH does not establish that access. For remote desktop capture, use the remote machine’s desktop/compositor-supported method and verify its requirements rather than assuming a shell command can see a user’s screen.
For unattended jobs, also decide where the output should go, ensure the destination is writable, and avoid interactive selection options. A delay only postpones capture; it does not create a display or turn an interactive capture into a reliable headless workflow.
Troubleshoot common capture failures
- The command is not found: Install the named utility using your distribution’s package manager, then confirm the executable is available in the session where you run it. Package names and installation commands differ by distribution.
- The output file is missing: Check the command’s exit status and the exact output path. Confirm the parent directory exists and is writable; try an explicit path under your home directory.
- The screenshot is blank on Wayland: The cited scrot and ImageMagick documentation describes X11/X-server capture, not universal Wayland support. Switch to your desktop/compositor’s supported screenshot tool and consult its documentation.
- Area selection appears to hang: Commands such as
gnome-screenshot --area,scrot -s, and interactive ImageMagick import wait for selection. Complete the selection, or use a noninteractive capture mode for automation. - A clipboard capture cannot be pasted: Clipboard output depends on the graphical session and target application. Try a file capture to separate screenshot creation from clipboard integration.
- SSH capture fails despite the utility being installed: The shell may not have access to a graphical display. Use the desktop’s supported remote-capture approach; installing a utility alone does not supply a display server.
- The pipeline prints unreadable characters:
scrot -writes image bytes to standard output. Redirect or pipe those bytes to an image-aware command instead of displaying them in the terminal.
Or skip the browser setup
The commands above are for capturing a Linux desktop. If what you actually need is a screenshot of a public web page—not your local desktop—ScreenshotNeo takes a page URL through a website screenshot API and returns an image or PDF. Its one-request API is not a way to capture the Linux screen.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP page capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. Equivalent examples:
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the shot was billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Practical reliability and cost considerations
For local screenshots, these utilities save files or provide image data; the cited documentation gives no common benchmark for speed or reliability across distributions, desktops, and display servers. A short delay can accommodate a known transient UI, but it cannot ensure that the right window is active or that a changing page is ready. For repeatable jobs, use a stable target and a noninteractive mode, check that the resulting file exists, and test the command in the actual desktop session where it will run.
For a website capture service, API billing and page processing are separate from local desktop capture. ScreenshotNeo specifies that only clean shots are billed and identifies no-charge outcomes in its response headers, so callers can inspect the verdict instead of inferring success solely from receiving bytes. Its published plans are: Free, 1,000 shots/month; Starter, $5 for 3,000; Growth, $15 for 15,000; Pro, $39 for 60,000; Scale, $99 for 250,000; and Business, $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is on every plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture only one window from the terminal?
Yes. On an X11-oriented workflow, GNOME Screenshot documents the active-window option; ImageMagick import also documents selecting a window. Which is appropriate depends on your desktop session.
Can a Linux terminal command screenshot a website without opening a browser window?
A desktop screenshot command captures the display, not a URL as a webpage-rendering request. For URL-based page capture, use a browser automation setup or a screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo.
Does a screenshot command also record video?
No. The commands covered here capture still images; video recording requires a screen-recording tool.
