How to Install a Plugin on Your WordPress Website (3 Safe Methods)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a self-hosted WordPress site, install a plugin from Plugins > Add New, then activate it. Use dashboard search for plugins in the official directory, upload a ZIP for premium or private plugins, or transfer the extracted folder with SFTP when dashboard installation is unavailable. Make a backup and check compatibility before any method.

Before installing: identify your WordPress setup

This guide covers WordPress.org software on hosting you control. WordPress.com is a hosted service with different plan rules; some plans include features that would otherwise require plugins, and plugin installation may not be available on every plan. If you cannot find a Plugins menu, first confirm whether your site is WordPress.com, another managed service, or self-hosted WordPress.

Choose the right installation method

Method Use it when Access needed Difficulty
Dashboard search The plugin is listed in the WordPress.org directory WordPress administrator access with plugin-management capability easiest
Dashboard ZIP upload You received a premium, vendor-supplied, or private plugin package WordPress administrator access with plugin-management capability Easy
SFTP or host file manager The dashboard cannot install files or you need a server-side fallback Hosting credentials and file access Advanced
WP-CLI You need repeatable deployment from a shell Shell access and a configured WordPress installation Advanced

WordPress.org documents three installation routes—dashboard search, ZIP upload, and manual upload. WP-CLI is an additional command-line interface for administrators and developers.

Prepare safely

  • Back up the site. A faulty or incompatible plugin can make the site or its administration area unusable.
  • Review the listing or vendor documentation. Check the last-updated date, support information, required PHP and WordPress versions, and the compatibility notice. WordPress identifies plugins as compatible with the current WordPress version or as untested.
  • Use a trusted package. Download ZIP files from the plugin author or another reputable source. Make sure the file is the plugin package, not a larger vendor bundle containing documentation and unrelated files.
  • Install one plugin at a time. Activate it, test important pages and admin screens, and only then continue. This makes conflicts easier to isolate.
  • Keep a recovery route. Know how to open your host’s file manager or connect by SFTP before activating unfamiliar code.

Method 1: install from the WordPress dashboard search

This is the simplest route for a plugin indexed in the official directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to your WordPress administration area.
  2. Open Plugins > Add New.
  3. Search by the plugin’s name, keyword, author, or tag.
  4. Open the result if you need to inspect its description, update information, support details, or compatibility notice.
  5. Choose Install Now and wait for WordPress to finish.
  6. Choose Activate. Installation places the files on the site; activation turns the plugin’s code on.

After activation, follow the plugin’s own setup screen or documentation. Check a key public page and the administration screens you use most before installing anything else.

Method 2: upload a plugin ZIP

Use this method for a paid plugin, a package supplied privately by its developer, or any plugin that is not in the directory search.

  1. Obtain the plugin’s own .zip file from a trusted source. If a vendor download contains manuals, license files, or several products, locate the individual plugin ZIP inside it.
  2. In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New.
  3. Choose Upload Plugin.
  4. Select the plugin ZIP from your computer.
  5. Choose Install Now.
  6. When WordPress reports success, choose Activate Plugin.

If WordPress reports that the package cannot be installed, the upload may be a bundle rather than the plugin ZIP, or the archive may have an unexpected folder structure. Obtain a clean package from the author and try again.

Method 3: upload the extracted plugin with SFTP

Manual upload is the advanced fallback when automatic installation is unavailable or the server will not let WordPress write plugin files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download the plugin ZIP from its trusted source.
  2. Extract it on your computer. The result should be a plugin folder containing the plugin files, including its main PHP file.
  3. Connect to the site with SFTP or your hosting provider’s file manager.
  4. Open the WordPress directory, then wp-content/plugins.
  5. Upload the extracted plugin folder into that plugins directory. Do not upload only a ZIP if the method requires an extracted folder.
  6. Return to the WordPress admin area and open Plugins.
  7. Find the uploaded plugin and choose Activate.

If the dashboard asks for FTP credentials during an otherwise normal install, the server may not permit WordPress to write to wp-content. Use the host’s documented SFTP or file-manager process, or ask the host to correct the file permissions.

Install with WP-CLI

WP-CLI is useful for scripted or repeatable deployments. From the WordPress installation’s shell environment, the wp plugin install command accepts a plugin slug, a local ZIP path, or a remote ZIP URL.

  • Install by directory slug: wp plugin install plugin-slug
  • Install a local archive: wp plugin install /path/to/plugin.zip
  • Install from a remote archive URL: wp plugin install https://example.com/plugin.zip
  • Install and activate after a successful install: wp plugin install plugin-slug --activate

Use a known slug or package location, and activate only after the installation command succeeds. Test the site after each deployment just as you would after a dashboard install.

Troubleshoot common installation problems

The Plugins menu is missing

Check whether the site is WordPress.com or another managed service, where plan or provider rules can limit plugins. On self-hosted WordPress, confirm that your account has the capability to manage plugins; a limited user role will not show every administration option.

The Upload Plugin button is missing

This usually points to the same hosted-service or account-capability restriction. Confirm the site type and sign in with an account permitted to install plugins.

WordPress asks for FTP credentials

The web server cannot write to the WordPress plugin directory using its current permissions or ownership. Use the host’s supported file manager or SFTP workflow, or have the host fix the permission configuration rather than entering credentials from an untrusted source.

“The package could not be installed” appears

Verify that you selected the plugin ZIP itself, not a vendor bundle. If you inspect the archive, its expected plugin folder should be at the appropriate level rather than buried several folders deep. Download a fresh package from the author if the archive is incomplete.

The site breaks after activation

Use your backup to restore the site when necessary. If the dashboard is inaccessible, connect with SFTP or the host’s file manager and rename the plugin’s directory; WordPress will deactivate it when it can no longer find the plugin. Then review the plugin’s WordPress and PHP requirements, compatibility notice, and support documentation before trying again.

You need a repeatable deployment

Use WP-CLI with a known slug or versioning process, and keep activation as a deliberate step. Record the package and version used so a later rollback is identifiable.

What to do immediately after activation

  • Open the plugin’s settings or onboarding page and complete only the required configuration.
  • Visit the site’s home page, a representative post or page, forms, login, checkout, or other functions important to your site.
  • Check the WordPress admin screens you rely on.
  • Watch for PHP errors, blank pages, failed forms, layout changes, or unusually slow responses.
  • If anything fails, deactivate the new plugin before installing another one and use your backup or recovery access if required.

The practical answer

Use Plugins > Add New search for an official-directory plugin. Use Upload Plugin for a trusted ZIP supplied by a vendor. Use SFTP or a host file manager when WordPress cannot write files, and use WP-CLI when you need shell-based, repeatable installation. In every case, back up first, verify compatibility, activate separately, and test the site before moving on.
