Browser and converter output can differ in layout, images, and whether text is selectable.
What MHTML-to-PDF conversion does
An MHTML file (often saved with the .mhtml or .mht extension) is a web archive that packages a page with resources such as stylesheets and images. Chrome’s extension documentation describes MHTML this way, while also noting restrictions on loading an MHTML file: it can be loaded from the file system and only in the main frame. Converting the archive to PDF renders its contents into pages. It does not recreate content that was never saved into the archive, and a fixed-page document will not behave exactly like the original web page. Expect to check the page breaks, image placement, margins, and text after conversion.
Convert an MHTML file to PDF with a browser
For a file you already have, this is usually the most direct route: use a browser that opens the archive, then print its rendered page to a PDF destination. The exact browser, operating system, and organization policy can affect whether the file opens and which destination labels appear.

- Open the archive. In your file manager, open the
.mhtmlor.mhtfile with a browser that supports the file on your device. If it does not render, try another installed browser rather than assuming the archive is damaged. Edge behavior for downloaded and local MHT/MHTML files can depend on Windows configuration and policy; Microsoft documents specific enterprise settings rather than a guarantee for every consumer setup. - Choose a PDF destination. Select Save as PDF if it is listed, or select the operating system’s PDF printer. In Firefox, Mozilla documents choosing Save to PDF in the print destination dropdown. Mozilla’s Firefox printing instructions
- Review the print preview. Check that the page is not blank or cut off and that important content and images appear. Change paper size, orientation, margins, or scale if the controls are available and the first layout is poor.
- Save and inspect the PDF. Give the PDF a new filename and open it in a PDF viewer. Scroll through every page; select and copy a sentence if searchable text matters.
In Edge, the print controls include an option for Background graphics. Turn it on if the page’s background colors or graphics are important to the appearance. Microsoft says Edge sends print commands and file information to the device’s operating system, not to Microsoft, for printing to a printer, application, or PDF. That statement describes Edge’s documented print path; it should not be generalized to third-party online converters. Microsoft’s Edge privacy documentation
Use an online converter when you cannot print the archive locally
An online MHTML-to-PDF converter may accept the archive directly, which can be convenient if the browser on your device will not open it. Before choosing a service, confirm it lists MHT or MHTML as a supported input and check the current size limits, retention and deletion terms, and whether the file is uploaded. “Online” alone does not tell you whether conversion happens on a remote server or in your browser.
For example, Fileverter describes its MHTML-to-PDF converter as offering a Download PDF option that creates an image-based PDF and a Save as PDF option that opens browser printing and may preserve selectable text. These are the service’s own descriptions, not a guarantee for every archive or a characteristic of all converters. If an archive contains sensitive information, prefer a local browser print workflow unless you have reviewed and accepted the specific converter’s file-handling terms. Do not infer that a service is private, upload-free, or immediately deletes files unless its current policy clearly says so.

Check the PDF for missing content and bad page breaks
An MHTML archive only contains the material captured when it was saved. If an image or style was absent from the archive, printing or conversion cannot reliably restore it. Even included content can paginate differently from the original page.
- Missing background or color: In Edge’s print settings, enable Background graphics if the visual design depends on it, then preview again.
- Content cut off at an edge: Try landscape orientation, a different paper size, narrower margins, or a smaller print scale. Check that smaller text remains readable.
- Unexpected blank pages or awkward breaks: Change paper size or scale and inspect the preview page by page. A web page does not necessarily map neatly onto printed sheets.
- Images missing: Compare the PDF with the archive opened in the browser. If an image is absent in the rendered archive, the PDF conversion is unlikely to have it; use another saved copy if you have one.
- Text cannot be selected: Test the actual output, not just the converter’s label. If the service provides a browser-print option, compare that result with an image-based download.
Troubleshooting an MHT or MHTML conversion
The file will not open in the browser
Try opening it from the browser’s file-open command or choose a different browser that is available on your device. On managed Windows devices, Edge’s handling of downloaded or local MHT/MHTML files may be affected by policy settings. The Edge policy pages document particular configurations; they do not establish universal support across all browsers or systems. If local opening remains unavailable, use a converter that explicitly accepts MHT/MHTML after checking its terms.

The PDF destination is missing
Look for Save as PDF in the browser’s destination list. If it is not there, check whether the operating system offers a PDF printer in its system print dialog. In Firefox, use the destination dropdown and choose Save to PDF when present. Available names can vary by platform.
The PDF is blank or incomplete
First confirm that the archive itself renders correctly in the browser. Then reopen Print and check the preview, print range, scale, and destination. If the archive renders but a web resource is still absent, the saved archive may not contain it; changing PDF settings cannot add unsaved page resources.
The layout looks different from the archived page
Adjust paper size, margins, orientation, scale, and background graphics, then review the preview before saving again. For a long page or a document where text matters, compare the browser-print result with an online converter’s alternative output and verify both pagination and text selection.

You are unsure whether an online service is private
Read the named service’s current terms for upload, processing, retention, deletion, and file-size limits. Do not treat a vendor’s statement that processing is local as independently verified. Fileverter describes its own converter, for instance, but its claims should not be applied to other services. For sensitive files, the local Edge print route has the specific privacy description noted above; that does not speak for third-party sites.

Are MHT and MHTML different formats for this task?
They are commonly used filename extensions for MHTML web archives. Check that the browser or converter you choose explicitly accepts the extension on your file.
Will a PDF look exactly like the original web page?
No conversion method can promise an exact match for every archive. The browser print preview and the saved PDF are the practical checks for layout, images, page breaks, and text.
