The same control works with the native Video block, YouTube and other Embed blocks, and VideoPress. If the player is centered but still fills the content column, add a CSS class and apply a maximum width.
Center an uploaded video in the WordPress editor
This method applies to a video uploaded to the Media Library or added directly through the native Video block.
- Open the post or page in the WordPress editor.
- Add a Video block, or click the existing video so the block itself is selected.
- In the block toolbar, open Change alignment.
- Choose Align center.
WordPress describes this control as the tool to “align the Video block.” Depending on your theme, the menu may also include None, Wide width, Full width, Align left, and Align right. Wide and Full width are shown only when the active theme supports them.
Center a YouTube or other externally hosted video
An external video is embedded from its URL; it does not need to be uploaded to your WordPress Media Library.

- Copy the video URL from YouTube or another supported provider.
- Insert that provider’s block, such as YouTube, or insert the generic Embed block.
- Paste the URL and click Embed.
- Select the resulting block, open Change alignment, and choose Align center.
The available Wide width and Full width choices still depend on theme support. If the provider block has its own settings panel, make sure you have selected the embed block rather than a surrounding Group, Columns, or Paragraph block.
Center a VideoPress player
- Select the VideoPress Embed block.
- Open Change alignment in the block toolbar.
- Choose Align center.
VideoPress also provides Advanced → Additional CSS Class(es). That field is useful when the normal alignment setting centers the block but your theme still controls the player’s width.

Why the centered video may still be full width
Alignment and size are separate settings. Core WordPress video markup places the player inside a <figure class="wp-block-video">. Core styling sets the video element to width: 100% and uses centered text on .wp-block-video.aligncenter. As a result, Align center can center the block while the video continues to occupy the entire content column.
If your goal is a centered player that is deliberately narrower, use a custom class and a maximum-width rule.

Make a narrower video while keeping it centered
1. Add a class to the block
- Select the Video, Embed, or VideoPress block itself.
- Open the settings sidebar and expand Advanced.
- Enter
centered-videoin Additional CSS Class(es).
2. Add the CSS
Put this rule in the CSS area provided by your theme or WordPress plan, then adjust the maximum width if needed:

}That version keeps the player from exceeding its container while preserving the browser’s natural width. For a specific narrower size, use a chosen value such as 720px and center block-level elements with automatic side margins:

}A 720-pixel maximum is an example, not a universal requirement. Choose a width that suits your content column and test it at both desktop and mobile sizes.

The alignment option is missing or has no effect
- Click the video or embed once more and confirm that the block toolbar belongs to that block, not to a surrounding Group, Columns, or Paragraph block.
- Check whether the theme supports the alignment choices you are trying to use. Wide and Full width are theme-dependent.
- Preview or publish the page. Editor styles and front-end styles can differ, and a theme rule may override the editor appearance.
The block is centered but the player is too wide
- Use the Advanced class field and the
max-widthCSS above. - For an iframe or video that remains block-level, retain
margin-left: autoandmargin-right: auto. - Inspect the published page at mobile and desktop widths to ensure the fixed maximum does not create overflow.
The CSS does not change anything
- Verify that the class is entered without a leading period: use
centered-video, not.centered-video, in the Additional CSS Class(es) field. - Confirm that the class was added to the actual video or embed block.
- Check whether your theme or WordPress plan permits custom CSS. If it does not, use the built-in alignment control or a theme setting that exposes content width.
Choose the right centering method

The practical answer
Use Align center first; it is the correct built-in solution for WordPress Video, YouTube/Embed, and VideoPress blocks. If “centered” still means a full-column player, that is expected behavior when width remains 100 percent. Add a class under Advanced → Additional CSS Class(es), apply a sensible max-width, and verify the result on the published page at desktop and mobile widths.
