There is no search engine that makes you completely anonymous. For ordinary private searching, DuckDuckGo is the most straightforward option, Brave Search is the strongest choice if you value an independently built index and ranking controls, Startpage can proxy result pages, and SearXNG suits technical users who can evaluate or host an instance. If your goal is anonymity from websites and network observers, use Tor Browser as part of a broader threat model rather than relying on a search provider alone.
Private search is not the same as anonymous browsing
A search engine can avoid storing a personal search history while your internet provider or another network intermediary still sees the IP address used to route your connection. Once you follow a result, the destination website applies its own logging, cookies, fingerprinting and advertising policies. DuckDuckGo explains both boundaries in its privacy policy.
Use “private search” to describe reduced collection by the search service. Use “anonymous browsing” only when your connection and browser identity are also protected against the observers relevant to your situation. Privacy Guides recommends Tor Browser for that stronger anonymity goal, rather than treating a search-engine proxy as a complete solution.
Quick comparison
| Service | Index model | Stated data practice or control | Privacy features | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brave Search | Brave says it uses an independent index. | Brave describes the service as not profiling users; Goggles lets users apply selected ranking rules. | Optional Google fallback mixing; optional Web Discovery Project contribution. | Fallback and contribution settings change the data and result path; Brave’s quality claims are vendor statements, not an independent benchmark. |
| DuckDuckGo | Uses partner sources rather than claiming a wholly independent general index. | DuckDuckGo says it does not save or share search, chat or browsing history; it uses anonymous trends to improve indexes. | Contextual ads, JavaScript-free HTML and Lite interfaces, and a Tor onion service. | IP routing still occurs, Microsoft handles ad clicks, and destination sites have their own practices. |
| Startpage | Aggregates results from upstream providers. | Privacy Guides describes its privacy-oriented result access and Anonymous View feature. | Anonymous View can proxy some result destinations and standardize some browser and network properties. | Privacy Guides says not to rely on Anonymous View for anonymity; use Tor Browser for that purpose. |
| SearXNG | Open-source metasearch software that forwards queries to engines selected by an instance. | Policies and configuration depend on the instance operator. | Self-hosting and instance choice provide technical control. | Upstream engines still receive queries, and self-hosting does not automatically hide identity. |
Brave Search: best for an independent index and ranking controls
Brave says Brave Search maintains an independent index and does not profile users. Its comparison page also documents features that are easy to miss when “anonymous” is used as a blanket label.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible Model(s): Magicmoon brand filter only for 24 inch -diagonally measured - widescreen monitor - aspect ratio 16:9 - filter size: width: 20 15/16", Height: 11 13/16" (531mm x 298mm)
- Superior Privacy: The computer privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (the angle is about 30 to 60 degree), but bright when looking directly at it. To change the privacy level - simply adjust your monitor’s brightness accordingly
- Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy Filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 to 495 nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain
- Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in open work spaces
- Includes Two Options: Option 1 uses clear adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to slide the privacy screen filter on and off as needed
Settings that change the model
- Google fallback mixing: Brave says you can enable Google results for queries its own index does not serve well. If enabled, some Google result behavior can enter the result path.
- Web Discovery Project: This is an opt-in way to contribute anonymous search and browsing information to help develop Brave’s index. It is not the same as the default search experience.
- Goggles: User-selected ranking rules can reshape results, which is useful when you want control over sources or ranking preferences.
Choose Brave when index independence and transparent ranking controls matter more than a proxy to the sites you visit. There is no neutral current benchmark establishing Brave as the universally most relevant engine, so test it with the searches you actually perform.
DuckDuckGo: the easiest privacy-focused starting point
DuckDuckGo’s policy states: “We don’t save or share your search, chat, or browsing history when you search on DuckDuckGo, chat on Duck.ai, or use our apps and extensions.” That is a company policy statement, not independent audit evidence. The same policy says IP addresses are needed to route traffic, anonymous search trends are used to improve indexes, and external websites’ policies apply after click-through. See the full policy.
Useful access options
- Contextual advertising: DuckDuckGo says most revenue comes from private search ads based on the results page. It identifies Microsoft’s ad network as handling ad clicks, so an ad click has a different privacy path from entering a query.
- HTML and Lite: The help page lists JavaScript-free HTML and Lite interfaces for readers who want simpler pages or fewer browser features.
- Tor onion service: DuckDuckGo lists a Tor entry option. Reaching it through Tor is what provides the network-routing protection; merely choosing DuckDuckGo in a normal browser does not.
DuckDuckGo is a practical default if you want a familiar interface, a stated no-history policy and optional low-script or Tor access, while understanding that it cannot control what happens on the destination site.

Startpage: useful proxy access, not a promise of anonymity
Startpage’s Anonymous View can proxy some result destinations and attempt to standardize activity, hiding certain network and browser properties from the destination. Privacy Guides’ search-engine guidance explicitly warns that Anonymous View should not be relied upon for anonymity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That distinction matters: a proxy can alter what a destination sees, but it does not create the same anonymity set or traffic protections as Tor Browser. Treat Anonymous View as a convenience for opening a result with fewer direct browser signals, not as protection against a determined network or identity observer.
SearXNG: flexible metasearch for technically capable users
SearXNG is open-source, self-hostable metasearch software. An instance sends your query to the search engines configured by its operator, combines their responses and may modify the deployment or logging policy. Privacy Guides describes the software and its trade-offs in the same guide.

Checks before using a public instance
- Read the instance’s privacy policy and identify whether queries, IP addresses or request metadata are logged.
- Check which upstream engines are enabled; forwarding still means those providers receive the query.
- Understand that self-hosting gives you control of the server, not automatic anonymity from your ISP, hosting provider or upstream engines.
SearXNG is a good fit when you can evaluate those dependencies or operate the instance yourself. It is not a one-click anonymity tool.
Why search-ad clicks need separate scrutiny
Typing a query and clicking an advertisement expose different parties and identifiers. The paper Understanding the Privacy Risks of Popular Search Engine Advertising Systems, published at ACM Internet Measurement Conference 2023, tested selected ad systems rather than every current search or click flow. In that sample, navigation-based tracking appeared in 100% of tested DuckDuckGo ad clicks and 100% of tested Startpage ad clicks; 93% of tested destination pages across five engines contained trackers or other privacy-harming resources. Read the study PDF.

The authors also reported advertiser receipt of user identifiers in query parameters in 68% of DuckDuckGo, 92% of Startpage and 53% of Qwant cases studied. They attributed those parameters to redirectors encountered in ad-click flows; the figures are not findings about ordinary, non-ad search queries and should not be generalized beyond the tested sample and year.

Choose by your actual threat model
For less retention by the search provider
Start with DuckDuckGo’s stated no-history policy or Brave’s stated no-profiling approach. Review each service’s current settings and policy before relying on them for sensitive work.
For an independent index
Try Brave Search, leaving Google fallback and Web Discovery Project participation off unless you specifically want those options. Use Goggles when ranking controls are valuable.
For opening results through a proxy
Use Startpage Anonymous View selectively, but do not call it anonymous browsing. Its protection ends where its proxy and the destination’s own controls end.

- Easy Installation: Choose between 2 simple Options; Slide-On/Off or Mounted. Not touchscreen compatible
For anonymity from network observers
Use Tor Browser and avoid mixing identifying accounts, personal browser profiles and ordinary traffic with the activity you want to keep unlinkable. A different search engine alone does not conceal the IP address your network uses to reach it.
For a technical, self-managed setup
Evaluate or self-host SearXNG, document its upstream engines and logging, and remember that the server’s network provider and upstream services remain part of the trust chain.
Quick Recap
How to test a service without overtrusting it
- Run several normal searches that represent your real needs, including local, technical and news queries; no current neutral benchmark proves a universal winner.
- Read the provider’s privacy policy and distinguish default behavior from optional fallback, contribution and personalization settings.
- Open an ordinary result and an advertisement separately. Check which domain receives each request and whether redirects occur.
- For stronger anonymity, repeat the task in Tor Browser rather than assuming a search-engine label changes your network identity.
