If you are abroad and need a German IP address, look for German server locations; if you are visiting Germany and want access to services from home, choose a VPN with servers in your home country. For either use, compare privacy evidence, leak protection, device support, streaming results and the full subscription cost—not just a provider’s headline claims.
Current comparison sites identify NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and Private Internet Access among the options worth considering, but their rankings and streaming tests are reviewers’ findings, not guarantees. Features, prices and platform access can change.
Which VPNs are worth comparing in Germany?
These services appear in current Germany-focused comparisons, but they are not a universal ranking. The evidence below reflects what the named publications report, not independent testing for this article. Security.org’s Germany review is dated August 26, 2026; TechRadar’s general VPN guide is dated September 24, 2026. Check current features, subscription terms and app availability before buying.

The publications do not provide a consistent, directly comparable set of Germany-only speed results for all these providers. Avoid choosing on the basis of a single speed figure copied from a different test context.

Choose the country you need first
You need a German IP address while abroad
Check that the VPN offers servers in Germany and, if location matters to your service, the German cities you need. Security.org lists Berlin and Frankfurt for NordVPN in its comparison; that listing is a reviewer’s snapshot, not a promise that every provider’s locations remain unchanged. A German IP may help with services that make content available based on location, but streaming platforms can block VPN addresses and access can change.
You are visiting Germany and need services from home
Choose a VPN with servers in the country where the service is normally available. A German server will generally give you a German IP address, not an address from your home country. Before relying on a VPN for a paid streaming subscription during a temporary trip within the EU, check whether EU portability rules already cover the service.

You mainly want protection on public Wi-Fi
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server, helping limit what someone on the local network can observe. It also means you are placing trust in the VPN provider. A VPN does not make you fully anonymous or prevent every kind of tracking. Keep your device and apps updated, use strong account security and check that the VPN’s kill switch and leak protections are enabled.
Check EU portability before using a VPN for travel
Under Regulation (EU) 2017/1128, providers of covered paid online content services must let a subscriber who is temporarily present in another EU member state access and use the service in the same manner as in the member state of residence. The rule concerns qualifying portable services and time-limited travel. It does not establish that every free broadcaster participates, apply to permanent relocation or guarantee access to every cross-border catalogue. Check the service and your circumstances against the regulation.

How to compare VPN privacy and security
Look for evidence behind privacy claims
“No logs” is a provider’s claim unless supported by evidence. Heise says external verification of such promises is difficult and limits its comparison to services with public independent audit confirmation. When comparing providers, check what was audited, who conducted the audit, when it took place and which products or systems were in scope. An audit is evidence about a defined review; it is not a guarantee about every future practice.
Check leak protection and the kill switch
A VPN connection can fail or behave differently from what you expect. Check for a kill switch that blocks traffic if the VPN disconnects, and look for DNS and WebRTC leak testing in independent comparisons. These checks address different possible ways information can escape the intended VPN route. Security.org’s Germany comparison covers kill switches and leak tests, but its results are a comparison snapshot rather than a substitute for checking the current app and your own device.

Consider the country and provider, not just the app
Germany is covered by GDPR protections, as Security.org notes, but data-protection rules do not replace device security or careful network practices. A VPN changes who can observe parts of your connection; it does not remove the need to assess the provider’s privacy policy and independent evidence.

TechRadar reports streaming results for services including NordVPN, Surfshark and Private Internet Access in its comparisons. Those results describe the publication’s test context, not guaranteed access for every subscriber, device, location or date. Streaming platforms can block VPN IP addresses, and VPN providers can change their networks. If streaming is the deciding factor, look for a recent test of the exact platform and region you need, then check the service’s terms.

A VPN does not make copyright infringement lawful. TechRadar’s Germany guide says VPNs are legal in Germany, while also warning that illegal copyright activity remains illegal and streaming platforms’ terms may apply. Treat that as a publication’s general guidance, not legal advice about a particular use or a guarantee that circumventing a geographic restriction is permitted by a platform.
Compare the total cost and practical limits
Promotional prices and plan details change, so an old roundup is a poor basis for a purchase decision. Compare the ongoing and renewal price shown at checkout, not only the introductory offer. Also check the simultaneous-device limit, any free-plan restrictions, refund conditions and whether the apps support your devices. The current Germany comparisons identify features and review selections but do not establish one stable price that applies to every region and subscription term.
- Confirm the country and, where relevant, city locations you need.
- Read the privacy policy and note the date and scope of any independent audit.
- Check kill-switch availability and DNS/WebRTC leak-test evidence.
- For streaming, look for a recent test of the exact service and region rather than a general claim.
- Compare device limits, free-tier country restrictions, renewal cost and refund terms before paying.
Comparison-site methodology can help put findings in context. Top10VPN says its 2026 Germany guide reflects 59 VPNs tested, more than 30,000 combined testing hours and more than 50 combined years of experience. Security.org says its 2026 Germany methodology considered more than 50 VPNs, used more than 2,500 research hours and included 300 speed tests, six experts consulted and six recommended VPNs.
