This captures a reconstruction of the element, not necessarily a pixel-perfect screenshot: CSS support, cross-origin assets, iframes, and canvas size can affect the result.
Export a DOM element to PNG in the browser
The example below uses html2canvas. Add the library to your project using its normal package-manager setup or load it through a script tag, then run this code after the page and target element are available. The exact output depends on the element and browser, so test it with the styles and assets you actually use.

});Give the target a stable selector, for example <div id="capture-card">...</div>. The function checks for a missing node, waits for the library’s rendering promise, handles a null Blob, and revokes the object URL after the download has had a chance to start. A production interface should also show an error to the user rather than relying only on the console.
Why the result may differ from the page
html2canvas reads DOM and style information and builds an image representation; it does not take a literal screenshot of the browser’s rendered pixels. Its documentation cautions that the image may not be fully accurate and that unsupported CSS properties can be missing or rendered differently. See html2canvas documentation.

That distinction matters if you need an exact record of what a browser displayed. A DOM renderer can be convenient for exporting a card, chart, or component, but verify details such as fonts, shadows, filters, transforms, and responsive layout against the browsers you support. Do not promise pixel-perfect output without checking the actual target.
Choose a rendering approach
html2canvas
Use html2canvas(element) when you want a straightforward promise that resolves to a canvas and its reconstruction approach supports your element. Its documentation describes CSS and rendering limitations, including the inability to inspect cross-origin iframe contents. A cross-origin iframe cannot be read as if it were part of your page.
html-to-image
html-to-image provides functions such as toPng(node) and toBlob(node). Its documented process clones the DOM, copies styles, embeds fonts and images where possible, wraps the content in SVG foreignObject, then rasterizes it. Browser support requirements, very large DOM trees, or large data URLs can cause problems, so check the project’s current documentation and test your case.
Use its PNG helper for a direct data URL result:

- Visual fidelity: check the CSS features used by the element; both approaches reconstruct the view, and unsupported behavior may differ.
- Images and fonts: confirm that assets can be loaded and embedded for export, especially when served from another origin.
- Iframes: html2canvas cannot read cross-origin iframe documents.
- Browser coverage and element size: check the library’s current support notes and test the largest realistic capture.
- Output API: choose a canvas, PNG data URL, or Blob according to the download or processing workflow.
Encode and download PNG safely
HTMLCanvasElement.toBlob(callback, 'image/png') asynchronously produces a Blob. PNG is also the default when the requested format is omitted or unsupported. The callback may receive null, so handle that case before creating a download link. See MDN’s toBlob() reference.
Creating an object URL from the Blob and assigning it to an anchor’s href lets the browser download the image without converting the whole file to a base64 string. Release the object URL only after the browser has had an opportunity to use it. MDN generally recommends toBlob() over toDataURL() for large images because toDataURL() encodes the entire image as an in-memory string; see MDN’s toDataURL() reference.
Handle cross-origin images and iframes
A canvas must be origin-clean to export its pixels. If the target includes a cross-origin image, the image host must allow it through CORS; a library option cannot override the browser’s security policy. MDN explains the requirements in Use cross-origin images in a canvas. If you control the image host, configure the appropriate CORS response there and make sure the image is requested in a way compatible with that policy.
If the rendered canvas is not origin-clean, toBlob() can throw a SecurityError. Handle rejected rendering promises and exceptions around encoding, and identify which asset caused the failure. Cross-origin iframe contents present a separate limitation: html2canvas cannot traverse their documents. If an iframe’s contents are essential, an exporter running on the iframe’s own origin or a different capture method may be needed.

Size, memory, and performance
Large elements require more memory and can exceed browser-dependent canvas limits. MDN notes that maximum canvas dimensions vary by browser and environment; see the canvas element reference. Export only the necessary node, avoid unnecessarily large dimensions, and test on the devices and browsers that matter. A failure on a very large capture may reflect memory or dimension limits rather than a selector bug.
Wait until required content is ready before rendering: late-loading images or fonts can produce incomplete output. For a large image, prefer a Blob download rather than a data URL to avoid the latter’s full-image in-memory string. If the export need is a literal capture of displayed pixels rather than a reconstructed DOM image, consider whether a browser capture mechanism better fits—but check its support and user-flow requirements first.
Native element capture is a different route
MDN describes Element Capture and Region Capture as APIs that can constrain a user-selected screen-sharing stream to an element, then extract a frame and draw it to a canvas. This is not a universal drop-in replacement: it requires support for Element Capture and ImageCapture.grabFrame() and involves the screen-capture flow. Troubleshooting
The selector returns no element
Confirm the selector matches the rendered page and run the export after the component has mounted. If the element is inserted asynchronously, trigger export only after the application has rendered it.
The download is blank or missing late content
Check whether images, fonts, charts, or other content are still loading when rendering begins. Wait for the relevant content to be ready, then test the capture again. Also verify that the selected node includes the visible content you intend to export.
PNG encoding throws a security error
Inspect images in the element for cross-origin sources. The image server must grant CORS permission; client-side settings cannot bypass this. Cross-origin iframe content also cannot be read by html2canvas.

Some styles look wrong or disappear
This can be a renderer limitation rather than a problem with the page itself. Check the library’s support notes and simplify or adjust unsupported styling if practical. Validate the result in each target browser.
Large exports fail or exhaust memory
Reduce the captured area or its rendered dimensions, and avoid encoding to a data URL when a Blob will do. Canvas size limits depend on browser and environment, so a limit may remain even after reducing other work.
The browser does not download the file
Check that the Blob is not null, the link has a download filename, and the object URL remains valid while the download starts. Delay revocation briefly rather than revoking immediately. Surface rejected promises and encoding exceptions in the application so users can see a useful error.
