How to Use Ahrefs for SEO: A Practical Workflow from Audit to Rankings

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Ahrefs as a connected SEO workflow: verify your site, crawl it with Site Audit, find and qualify topics in Keywords Explorer, study competitors in Site Explorer, improve one canonical page for each search intent, and measure the result in Rank Tracker alongside clicks and conversions. Ahrefs Free is enough for diagnostics on verified sites; paid access mainly expands research coverage, history, credits, exports and tracking capacity.

What Ahrefs does for SEO

Ahrefs is a web-based SEO platform built around four core tools:

  • Site Audit: crawls a website and reports technical and on-page problems.
  • Keywords Explorer: researches search terms, demand indicators, ranking difficulty, clicks and search-result features.
  • Site Explorer: analyzes competitors’ organic keywords, top pages, backlinks and content patterns.
  • Rank Tracker: records keyword positions by location and device over time.

Use Ahrefs’ metrics to prioritize investigation, not as a substitute for your own Search Console, analytics and conversion data.

1. Create and verify your website project

  1. Sign up for an Ahrefs Free account.
  2. Open the Dashboard and add your website.
  3. Verify ownership using one of the verification methods Ahrefs presents.
  4. Set the exact domain or URL prefix, protocol, target country, device and competitor domains you want to monitor.

Ahrefs says verified websites receive free access to selected Site Explorer, Site Audit, Web Analytics and related capabilities. Verification matters because unverified research and project limits depend on your plan.

2. Run a Site Audit and fix the highest-impact issues

Start a crawl after confirming the preferred domain, crawl scope and any exclusions. Ahrefs describes Site Audit as scanning for “170+ common technical & on-page SEO issues and helps you fix them.” The count and issue classifications can change as the product is updated.

Prioritize issues in this order

  1. Crawling and indexing: robots directives, blocked resources, server errors, redirect chains, canonical errors, noindex mistakes and XML sitemap problems.
  2. Internal linking: orphan pages, broken links, excessive depth and important pages with too few relevant internal links.
  3. Page quality: duplicate or near-duplicate titles and descriptions, missing headings, thin pages, broken media and unsuitable canonical targets.
  4. Templates and scale: recurring problems affecting product, category, article or location templates.

Open an issue to see affected URLs, inspect representative pages, assign an owner and record the intended fix. Recrawl after deployment and compare the new crawl with the baseline; closing an issue in the report is not the same as confirming that search engines can now crawl, index or rank the page.

3. Find and qualify keywords in Keywords Explorer

Start with a seed and the correct market

Enter a broad service, product or problem, then set the country and device that match your audience. Expand the seed with related terms, questions and phrase variations. Group phrases that have the same likely intent rather than creating a page for every wording.

Judge the search result, not one metric

  • Search intent: decide whether the user wants information, a comparison, a product, a local service or a specific website.
  • Demand and clicks: use search-volume and click indicators as directional estimates, since searches can be absorbed by ads, features or answer panels.
  • Difficulty: treat the difficulty value as an estimate of competition, not a guarantee of the links or authority you will need.
  • SERP features: note ads, featured snippets, video, local packs, shopping results and other layouts that change the available organic clicks.
  • Ranking-page quality: open the actual top results. Check whether they answer the query well, match the searcher’s preferred format and come from sites you can realistically compete with.
  • Business value: prioritize terms that can produce qualified leads, sales, subscriptions or another measurable outcome.

Choose one primary topic and a small set of supporting terms only after confirming that your planned page type matches the current results. A high-volume phrase with the wrong intent is usually a worse target than a narrower phrase that attracts the right visitor.

4. Use Site Explorer to uncover competitor opportunities

Enter a competing domain or a specific competing URL. Review:

  • Organic keywords and the pages ranking for them.
  • Top pages by estimated organic traffic.
  • Backlink sources and the content or assets attracting links.
  • Content formats, page depth, internal-link patterns and topics competitors cover repeatedly.

Look for a gap where a competitor earns visibility but your site has no adequate page. Validate the gap manually: the competitor’s estimated traffic and keyword positions are modeled values, and a ranking opportunity may still have little commercial value or be dominated by unusually strong pages.

5. Turn research into pages that can rank

  1. Map each chosen intent to one canonical URL. Consolidate overlapping pages instead of making several URLs compete for the same query.
  2. Write the clearest answer for the intent near the top of the page, then add the depth the result requires.
  3. Improve the title, headings, media, examples and supporting evidence without forcing keywords unnaturally.
  4. Add contextual internal links from relevant pages and make the destination’s purpose clear in the anchor text.
  5. Use structured data only when the page qualifies for the relevant schema type and the markup accurately describes visible content.
  6. Publish, request indexing through your normal search-engine workflow, and revisit the live SERP after the page has had time to be recrawled and evaluated.

Do not treat an Ahrefs keyword list as a content calendar by itself. The page must satisfy the searcher, support the business objective and be technically accessible.

6. Set up Rank Tracker for measurable follow-through

Add priority keywords to Rank Tracker and specify the target country or location, device and competitors. Save the starting positions and the URL ranking for each term. Review changes with the corresponding page, SERP layout, clicks and conversions; a position increase without qualified traffic or business value is not a completed SEO win.

7. Plan around Ahrefs credits

Ahrefs says that opening reports in Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Content Explorer, Batch Analysis and Competitive Analysis consumes credits. Site Audit, Brand Radar and Rank Tracker do not consume credits under that guide.

Practical credit controls

  • Define the question you need answered before opening a report.
  • Filter to the relevant country, device, URL or competitor first.
  • Record decisions and export necessary rows during the session rather than repeatedly reopening the same reports.
  • Reserve credits for unresolved opportunities and scheduled reviews instead of browsing without a hypothesis.

Ahrefs Free versus paid access

Ahrefs Free is designed around verified websites and includes selected diagnostics and analytics capabilities. Paid plans expand access to unverified research, historical data, report rows, exports, projects, keyword lists and rank-tracking capacity.

A repeatable monthly Ahrefs routine

  1. Review Rank Tracker movements and identify pages with meaningful gains or losses.
  2. Check Search Console clicks, impressions and queries for the same URLs.
  3. Run or schedule a Site Audit crawl and prioritize new blocking issues.
  4. Use Site Explorer to note competitor pages, links or SERP changes that affect your market.
  5. Use Keywords Explorer for the next set of validated opportunities, keeping intent and business value ahead of raw volume.
  6. Publish fixes, record the change date and evaluate outcomes after sufficient recrawl and ranking time.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using estimated traffic or difficulty as if it were measured visits or a ranking promise.
  • Targeting a keyword without checking the current country-specific SERP and device.
  • Creating multiple thin pages for close variants that share one intent.
  • Fixing every Site Audit warning before addressing crawlability, indexation and important-page quality.
  • Spending credits on repeated reports without recording the decision they support.
  • Calling a ranking improvement a success without checking qualified clicks, leads or revenue.
