The right Snagit method depends on what you mean by “full screen.” To capture everything currently visible on a monitor, use an All-in-One capture and select the complete screen. To capture an entire webpage or document that continues below the viewport, use Scrolling Capture. Automatic scrolling is convenient, while Manual Scrolling Capture is the fallback when a page, browser, driver or security utility prevents automatic movement.
Choose the correct kind of full-screen capture

A visible-screen capture cannot include content that is currently off-screen. Conversely, a scrolling capture is unnecessary when the complete target already fits inside the monitor.
Capture the entire visible screen in Snagit
1. Open the Capture window
Open Snagit’s Capture window and choose All-in-One. Snagit’s current webpage workflow uses this mode for screen and scrolling captures. The exact appearance of controls can vary by operating system and Snagit release, so use the labels shown in your installation rather than assuming that every shortcut or button is identical.
2. Start the capture
Start the capture from the Capture window. When the selection controls appear, select the complete visible screen. If you have multiple monitors, move the pointer to the monitor you want and select that display’s full visible area; selecting across displays can produce a larger desktop image than intended.

3. Finish and edit
Complete the selection to open the result in Snagit Editor. Crop unwanted monitor edges, annotate if necessary, then save or share from the Editor. Choose an image format that matches the job: PNG is useful for interface text and sharp graphics, while JPEG is smaller for photographic content.
Windows keyboard and OneClick behavior
On Windows, TechSmith documents the global Print Screen hotkey as a way to start a capture using the settings currently selected in the Capture window. That means Print Screen may not perform the action you expect if the selected mode or input has changed. Snagit’s OneClick capture button uses its documented default settings, which can differ from the Capture window configuration. If a hotkey or widget starts the wrong kind of capture, open the Capture window, verify the mode and settings, and try again. The relevant support guidance was updated August 23, 2024.
Capture an entire webpage or long document
Use Scrolling Capture when the target extends below or beside the visible window. Snagit documents both an automatic approach and a manual approach. Automatic scrolling attempts to move the selected window vertically, horizontally or in both directions. Manual Scrolling Capture lets you control the movement yourself and is often the better option when automatic arrows do not appear or do not follow the page correctly.
Automatic Scrolling Capture
- Resize the browser or application window so the content is easy to scroll and the target area is stable.
- Open Snagit’s Capture window and select All-in-One.
- Start the capture and select the webpage or document region, excluding the scrollbar when possible.
- Use the scrolling controls that appear. Choose the horizontal, vertical or combined scrolling direction that matches the content.
- Allow Snagit to move through the page without clicking, switching windows or resizing the target.
- When the capture completes, review the full image in Snagit Editor and save or share it.
TechSmith’s current feature workflow describes selecting All-in-One, starting the capture, using the scrolling controls and then saving or sharing from Snagit Editor. Automatic controls may not appear for every browser, application or page.

Manual Scrolling Capture
- Begin the same way: open the Capture window, select All-in-One and select the content area.
- Choose the manual scrolling option when automatic arrows are unavailable or unreliable.
- Scroll the target in one smooth direction at a steady pace. Continue until the required content has passed through the selection.
- Finish the capture and inspect the joins in Snagit Editor for skipped or duplicated sections.
Manual capture is particularly useful for web applications with custom scroll containers, pages whose automatic controls are not detected, and situations where you need to stop at a precise point.
Version-specific shortcuts
Snagit 2023 Help lists Print Screen on Windows and Control+Shift+C on Mac as ways to start a scrolling capture. Treat those shortcuts as version-specific. If they do not work in your release, use the Capture window and consult the help built into that version instead of changing system-wide keyboard settings.
Prepare the page for a cleaner, more reliable result
- Resize first: make the browser or application large enough that the scroll path is straightforward.
- Exclude the scrollbar: include the page content, not the moving scrollbar, in the selection.
- Disable floating toolbars: browser extensions, accessibility bars and application toolbars can cover content or interrupt scrolling.
- Use smooth movement: scroll in one direction at a consistent speed. Fast, slow or zigzag motion increases the chance of missing sections.
- Stabilize dynamic content: let images and panels finish loading before starting. If content shifts while Snagit scrolls, capture a smaller section or use manual control.
- Keep the target active: do not switch applications, open menus or resize the window during capture.
Troubleshooting scrolling captures
Automatic arrows or controls do not appear
The browser or application may not expose a scrolling surface Snagit recognizes, or the selected region may include an unsupported control. Recheck the selection, remove the scrollbar from it, enlarge the window and try again with Manual Scrolling Capture.
The result stops partway down
Some pages use an inner scroll panel rather than the main window. Select that panel precisely and try manual scrolling. A page can also stop because it reached the end, because content loads only after interaction, or because a utility interrupted the scroll.

Sections are duplicated, skipped or misaligned
Use a steady one-direction scroll and avoid rapid wheel or trackpad gestures. Disable floating toolbars and overlays. For difficult layouts, capture shorter sections manually and combine them in an editor rather than forcing one automatic pass.
Automatic scrolling fails completely
TechSmith identifies several possible causes: conflicting third-party utilities, unsupported browsers or applications, incompatible hardware drivers and security software. Close utilities that intercept input, update or temporarily test without the conflicting software where permitted, and retry Manual Scrolling Capture. Do not assume that every webpage or application supports automatic capture.
The Mac App Store edition behaves differently
TechSmith documents a limitation in the Mac App Store edition: Apple sandboxing requirements prevent the full scrolling-capture functionality available in other distributions. TechSmith describes dragging a URL onto Snagit as an alternative for standard HTTP pages. That workaround does not apply to pages requiring a secure login or pages whose dynamic content is driven by a static URL. The limitation was documented in 2021; check current TechSmith support if your edition is affected.
A recent update changed the behavior
TechSmith’s Windows 2026 version history, updated July 23, 2026, lists fixes affecting Manual Scrolling Capture and other capture issues. Interface details and behavior can therefore be version-specific. Update Snagit when appropriate, then follow the help for your installed version; do not assume a Windows fix also applies to Mac.

Quality, privacy and file-size considerations
Choose an appropriate capture boundary
For a visible desktop screenshot, include only the monitor area needed. For a long page, avoid capturing unrelated browser chrome unless it is part of the evidence you need. A tighter boundary improves readability and reduces file size.
Check sensitive information before sharing
Full-screen captures can include notifications, account names, open documents and browser tabs outside the intended application. Review the entire image in Snagit Editor and blur or crop private data before exporting.
Expect large files from long pages
A full webpage can be many times taller than the viewport. Use PNG when exact text and interface edges matter; use JPEG when a smaller photographic file is more important. If a single image is unwieldy, capture logical sections and label them in order.

Which method should you use?
- Choose visible-screen capture when the complete desktop or monitor view is already visible.
- Choose automatic scrolling for a conventional webpage or document that extends beyond the viewport and exposes standard scrolling.
- Choose manual scrolling when automatic controls are missing, the page uses a custom scroll panel, or you need precise stopping points.
- Use a URL-based API when repeatable, unattended captures are more useful than operating Snagit interactively.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Snagit capture two monitors at once?
Snagit can capture the visible area you select, but the exact multi-monitor result depends on your operating-system display arrangement and the selected region. For a predictable result, select one monitor at a time.

A blank or incomplete result usually indicates that the page had not finished loading, the selected region was not the page’s actual scroll container, or the browser/application is unsupported. Wait for content, select the inner scroll panel, and try Manual Scrolling Capture.
Does scrolling capture work for PDFs?
It can work when the PDF is displayed in a scrollable application window, but support depends on the PDF viewer and edition of Snagit. If automatic scrolling fails, use manual capture or the viewer’s own export function.
What is the difference between a full-screen screenshot and a full-page screenshot?
A full-screen screenshot records the pixels currently visible on a monitor. A full-page screenshot stitches content that continues below or beside the viewport by scrolling through the page.
