In a conventional four-drive setup, about half the drives’ raw capacity is usable, and the array can survive multiple drive failures only when no mirror pair loses both members. It suits workloads that favor performance and redundancy over capacity efficiency, but its actual speed and failure behavior depend on the implementation and workload.
How RAID 10 works
RAID 10, also written RAID 1+0, combines RAID 1 mirroring and RAID 0 striping. In the conventional layout, drives are grouped into mirrored pairs; data is then striped across those pairs. Each pair holds duplicate copies of its portion of the data, while striping distributes work across pairs. Oracle describes software RAID 1+0 as combining RAID-0 and RAID-1 for performance and data redundancy in its Oracle Linux software RAID reference.
RAID 10 is not RAID 0+1
The nesting order matters. RAID 10 stripes across mirrored pairs. RAID 0+1 mirrors striped sets. Oracle’s older Linux reference explains that after a disk failure, a RAID 0+1 mirror can become unusable until its failed set is replaced and repopulated; RAID 10 instead loses a member of one mirror pair and can continue using that pair’s remaining copy. These are stable layout distinctions, but operational steps should come from the documentation for the platform in use.
Drive count depends on the implementation
Four drives is the conventional minimum for a nested RAID 1+0 array. Oracle Linux 8’s LVM instructions specify at least four devices for RAID 10. Linux MD offers configurable RAID 10 layouts, including options for replica count and near, far, or offset arrangements, so do not assume every software implementation follows the same four-drive mirrored-pair rules. Check the supported layout and requirements for the system you plan to configure.

How much capacity RAID 10 provides
With conventional two-way mirroring, roughly half the members’ raw capacity is available for data before formatting and metadata. For example, four equal 4 TB drives provide about 8 TB before those deductions. That figure follows from the layout arithmetic; it is not a vendor benchmark. Unequal drive sizes and implementation details can reduce usable space further.
This is RAID 10’s central capacity tradeoff. RAID 5 uses distributed parity rather than a complete duplicate on every mirror member, so it can provide more usable space from the same number of drives; parity calculations and writes affect performance. The right comparison depends on the workload and platform, not capacity alone.

What performance to expect
RAID 10 can distribute work across striped pairs, and a mirror can offer alternate read sources. Those design features can help parallel I/O, but there is no universal speed multiplier. Writes must keep mirrored copies consistent, and real results depend on the workload, drives, controller or software implementation, queueing, and whether the array is healthy or degraded.
Consider the workload, not just the RAID label
- Sequential transfers: Striping can distribute work across drives, but the result depends on the devices and how the controller or software handles the transfer.
- Random I/O: Parallel access and alternate read sources may help, but the benefit depends on request patterns and queueing.
- Read-heavy work: Multiple copies can offer read-source flexibility; the implementation determines whether and how it uses that flexibility.
- Write-heavy work: Each write must be reflected in mirror copies. Do not assume writes double in speed or scale linearly with drive count.
- Latency: Throughput alone does not establish response time. Measure with the actual application and configuration.
For a server, workstation, or NAS, evaluate the storage on the intended hardware and software with the real workload. A RAID level by itself cannot predict a reliable performance figure.

How many drive failures can RAID 10 survive?
There is no single failure count that applies to every RAID 10 layout. In the conventional mirrored-pair arrangement, one drive can fail in a pair while its partner retains that pair’s data. The array may also survive failures in other pairs. If both members of any one pair fail before recovery, that pair has lost its data and the array may fail. The Linux MD manual explicitly makes RAID 10 fault tolerance dependent on configuration.
What happens after a drive fails
- Identify the failed member and check the array’s health with the supported tools for your platform.
- Follow the platform or vendor’s procedure to install a compatible replacement.
- Allow the mirror to be restored, then verify that the array reports healthy status.
Exact commands and replacement steps differ between hardware RAID, Linux MD, and other implementations. Consult the relevant platform guide rather than applying a procedure from a different system. Linux’s mdadm manual documents management of Linux MD arrays. During a degraded period, the array has less redundancy, and performance may be affected.

RAID is not a backup
RAID can keep storage available through some drive failures; it does not provide an independent historical copy. It cannot by itself recover data lost to accidental deletion, corruption, theft, or site loss. Maintain a separate backup appropriate to the data and recovery needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When RAID 10 makes sense
RAID 10 is a candidate when performance and protection from certain drive failures matter more than usable capacity. HPE describes RAID 1+0 as useful where high performance and data protection outweigh capacity efficiency in its ProLiant RAID 1 and RAID 1+0 guide. That is vendor guidance, not proof that RAID 10 is optimal for every database or server.

Before choosing, compare the options against the needs of your own deployment:
- Usable capacity: How much space remains from the planned drive count and sizes?
- Workload behavior: Does the actual read, write, throughput, and latency profile suit the layout?
- Failure combinations: Which specific member failures can the layout tolerate?
- Recovery behavior: How are replacement and rebuild handled, and what happens while the array is degraded?
- Platform support and cost: Does the controller or software support the chosen layout, and does the full drive configuration fit the budget?
RAID 10 compared with RAID 5 and RAID 6
These layouts make different tradeoffs. RAID 10 uses mirror copies and striping; RAID 5 distributes parity and generally spends less capacity on redundancy than full mirroring. The supplied platform documentation does not establish a universal performance or rebuild ranking for RAID 10, RAID 5, and RAID 6, so compare the supported implementations and test the workload that matters.
| Layout | Capacity tradeoff | Performance and writes | Failure and recovery considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| RAID 10 (conventional two-way mirrors) | About half of raw member capacity is usable before formatting and metadata. | Striping can distribute I/O; writes must maintain mirrored copies. No universal speed multiplier is established. | Tolerance depends on failure placement: multiple members may fail if each affected pair retains a copy; losing both members of one pair can defeat the array. |
| RAID 5 | Distributed parity consumes less space than full mirroring, according to Oracle’s software RAID reference. | Oracle notes parity calculation and writes affect performance; workload-specific figures are not established here. | Consult the specific platform documentation for its failure tolerance and recovery behavior. |
| RAID 6 | Not stated in the cited documentation. | Not stated in the cited documentation. | Not stated in the cited documentation. |
Hardware RAID and software RAID are distinct implementation paths. Red Hat’s RHEL 10 storage documentation covers storage management and mdraid, with mdadm identified as the Linux MD management utility.
