First check whether your organization allows screenshots. In Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365, an administrator can enable Screen Capture Protection that makes remote content disappear from screenshots or blocks capture entirely. No universal keyboard shortcut overrides that policy. If capture is allowed, use the screenshot command provided by your specific remote-desktop client and endpoint; the exact shortcut varies by client and operating system.
Why a Windows VDI screenshot may be black or blocked
Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) displays applications running on a remote session host or Cloud PC. Your local Windows or macOS screenshot tool normally captures what is rendered on the endpoint, but Microsoft’s Screen Capture Protection can prevent remote content from appearing in that capture. Depending on configuration, you may see a black rectangle, a warning, or a blocked capture.
Microsoft documents this control for Azure Virtual Desktop virtual machines and Windows 365 Cloud PCs. It is configured on the session host or Cloud PC through Intune device-configuration policy or Group Policy, then enforced by supported Windows App or Remote Desktop clients. Platform support differs for desktop, mobile and web connections, so a client that works for an unprotected session may be rejected or behave differently when protection is enabled. The two policy scopes

Microsoft says the stronger setting requires testing both locations. After changing policy, administrators should apply it to the session-host computer and restart it. Users must end an existing session, sign out, and sign in to a new session before verifying the result.

Before you try: confirm permission and the client
- Ask your VDI administrator whether screenshots are permitted. A company may prohibit screenshots even when the client technically supports them.
- Identify the service and client. Confirm whether you are using Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Remote Desktop, Windows App, a browser connection, or another broker. Record whether the endpoint is Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS or Android.
- Check the approved workflow. IT may provide an export, report-download, support process or temporary exception instead of enabling capture.
- Use only a supported client. Under Screen Capture Protection, Microsoft says unsupported client connections can fail or protected content may not behave as expected.
There is no evidence of one universal screenshot key sequence for every Windows VDI client. Do not assume that Print Screen, Snipping Tool, or a browser shortcut will work across all combinations.
How to capture when policy allows it
Capture from the local device
Once your administrator confirms that client-side capture is allowed, use the screenshot feature documented for your endpoint and remote-desktop client. On Windows, that may be the built-in Snipping Tool or another organization-approved utility; on macOS, use the approved macOS screenshot command. The important distinction is that you are capturing the client display, not bypassing a VDI control. If the remote window is maximized, capture the required window or region and verify that the image contains the remote application rather than a blank or protected area.
Capture inside the remote session
If the administrator configured “Block screen capture on client and server,” tools running inside the VM or Cloud PC are also blocked. If only client-side blocking is configured, an approved in-session capture might still be possible, but you should use it only when your organization authorizes that method. Save the file only to an approved location; local-drive redirection, cloud storage and email may be restricted separately.
Record what you captured
- Check that the entire required dialog, chart or error message is visible.
- Confirm the screenshot does not include unrelated customer or employee data.
- Use the file format and naming convention required by your support or compliance team.
- Follow your organization’s retention and deletion rules.
Screen Capture Protection is not the same as clipboard blocking
A screenshot and copy/paste use different data paths. Clipboard redirection can allow or deny text, images and files moving between the local device and a remote session. Azure Virtual Desktop policies can block transfer in one direction, both directions, or limit permitted data types. Microsoft’s requirements for directional and data-type controls vary by session-host operating-system prerequisites; do not assume that an older host supports every option. The clipboard policy applies to session hosts and does not depend on one particular Remote Desktop client version. Details are in Microsoft’s clipboard transfer documentation.

More broadly, RDP peripheral and resource redirection can govern clipboard, webcams, USB devices and printers. Administrators can set these controls with Intune or Group Policy, in an .rdp file, or through Azure Virtual Desktop/Remote Desktop Services broker properties. The most restrictive applicable setting takes precedence. See Microsoft’s RDP redirection guidance.
Therefore, being able to copy text does not prove that screenshots are allowed, and a blocked clipboard does not explain every black screenshot.
What administrators should check
Policy assignment and restart
Confirm whether the session host or Cloud PC has “Block screen capture on client” or “Block screen capture on client and server.” Ensure the policy reached the intended device, restart the session-host computers as Microsoft directs, and test with a new session. Existing sessions can retain the old state until the user signs out and signs back in.
Client and platform compatibility
Validate the endpoint platform and client against Microsoft’s current support requirements. Microsoft describes additional requirements for some mobile and browser scenarios, including managed devices, Intune mobile-application-management controls, or Edge for Business with MAM/Data Loss Prevention policy. Do not generalize Windows/macOS behavior to every web or mobile client.

Defense in depth
Microsoft cautions that Screen Capture Protection is not Digital Rights Management (DRM)-level protection. It blocks standard operating-system features and APIs but cannot make information impossible to copy. Administrators should consider disabling unnecessary clipboard, drive and printer redirection and may use watermarking to discourage photographing a display with a physical camera. Protection should be one layer of a broader data-protection design.
Troubleshooting a black or blocked screenshot
1. Ask whether protection is enabled
Give IT the time, client name, endpoint platform and whether the result is a black image, an error, or a refused connection. Ask which of the two policy scopes is configured.
2. Start a genuinely new session
If policy was recently changed, sign out rather than merely closing the client. Have the administrator verify that the session host restarted, then sign in again and retest.
3. Check unsupported-client behavior
Try only a client approved for the protected platform. Under some configurations Microsoft says an unsupported client may show an error instead of connecting; switching randomly among clients can create a misleading diagnosis.

4. Separate capture from clipboard and redirection
If copy/paste fails, review clipboard policy. If printers, USB devices or local drives are missing, review RDP redirection. These settings can coexist with screenshot protection but do not replace it.
5. Request an approved alternative
For an authorized business need, ask IT for an export, a support workflow or a documented exception. Do not attempt to defeat the control or use an unapproved camera, capture utility or data-transfer route.

FAQ
Can I force a screenshot with Print Screen?
Not when administrator policy blocks capture. There is no universal shortcut that overrides Screen Capture Protection; ask IT for an approved method.
Does a black image prove the VDI is broken?
No. A black or missing remote area can be the intended result of client-side capture protection. Verify policy, client support and session age before treating it as a technical fault.
Can Screen Capture Protection stop someone photographing the monitor?
Microsoft says it is not DRM-level protection. Watermarking and other controls can discourage physical-camera photography, but screenshot policy alone cannot guarantee that information cannot be copied.
