1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo run an MCP server in Cursor, add it to an mcp.json file, choose the transport the server exposes, then verify and enable its tools in Cursor Agent. Put .cursor/mcp.json in a project for project-only access, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json for a server shared across your projects. Use stdio when Cursor launches a local command; use SSE or Streamable HTTP when the server is available at an endpoint.
This guide walks through installation, configuration, permissions, CLI verification, remote authentication, troubleshooting and a browser-free ScreenshotNeo option for AI-driven screenshots.
What you need before adding a server
- A current Cursor installation with Agent/chat access.
- The MCP server’s installation instructions, command or endpoint, required arguments, and environment variables.
- Any credentials the server requires. Create narrowly scoped keys where the provider supports scopes.
- Permission to run the server locally or connect to its remote host.
Cursor can connect to servers written in any language that either print MCP messages to standard input/output or expose an HTTP endpoint. The server documentation remains the authority for its package name, arguments, port, authentication method and required runtime.
Choose where Cursor should load the configuration
| Location or route | Use it when | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
.cursor/mcp.json |
The tools belong to one repository or workspace | Only that project loads the configuration. |
~/.cursor/mcp.json |
You want the server available in multiple projects | Cursor can discover it globally for your user account. |
| Cursor MCP directory | The integration is listed and offers one-click installation | Cursor creates the supported configuration for that integration. |
Use the directory when it provides the exact integration you need. For an unlisted server, create or edit mcp.json yourself. Keep project configuration under version control only when it contains no secrets; use environment variables or a local ignored file for credentials.

This reliable raising desk minimizes user effort and ensures long term durability without complex upkeep.
Install a listed server from Cursor’s directory
- Open Cursor’s MCP server directory from the product UI.
- Find the integration and read its requirements, permissions and authentication notes.
- Choose the installation button if the listing matches your intended server and scope.
- Open the resulting configuration and check the command, arguments and environment-variable names before connecting.
- Return to Agent chat and inspect the server’s tools.
One-click installation is convenient, but it does not replace checking what code will run or what data the integration can access. For critical integrations, inspect the source, limit API keys and review requested permissions.
Configure a local server with stdio
stdio is the natural transport for a process Cursor starts on your machine. The process reads protocol messages from standard input and writes responses to standard output. Do not add ordinary logging to stdout; send diagnostics to stderr if the server’s documentation permits it.
Project-level example
Create .cursor/mcp.json at the root of the project:
{
"mcpServers": {
"server-name": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "mcp-server"],
"env": {
"API_KEY": "value"
}
}
}
}
Replace every example value with the server’s documented command, package, arguments and environment variables. For example, a Python server might use its virtual-environment interpreter as command and a script path in args; a compiled server might use an absolute executable path. Do not assume that mcp-server is a universal package name.
Recommended Free Tools
Global example
Use the same mcpServers object in ~/.cursor/mcp.json when the server should be available across projects. Keep the JSON valid: one top-level object, one mcpServers property, and a unique key for each server. Multiple server entries can live under that property.
Environment variables and paths
- Prefer an environment variable such as
API_KEYover putting a secret directly in a shared file. - Use an executable path that Cursor can actually resolve. GUI-launched applications may not inherit the same shell
PATHas your terminal. - If the server needs a working directory, follow its documented option or launch a wrapper script that sets the directory explicitly.
- Never print tokens in server output, screenshots or issue reports.
Connect to an SSE or Streamable HTTP server
Use a remote transport when the MCP server is already deployed behind an endpoint rather than launched as a local process. Cursor documents both SSE and Streamable HTTP endpoints. The server’s instructions must specify the endpoint URL and authentication details; do not guess the path or header format.
When each transport fits
| Transport | Best fit | Operational consideration |
|---|---|---|
stdio |
A command Cursor starts on the same machine | Local runtime, dependencies and permissions must be present. |
| SSE | A deployed server exposing a server-sent-events endpoint | Confirm the exact endpoint and network access. |
| Streamable HTTP | A deployed server exposing an HTTP MCP endpoint | Confirm authentication, TLS and any required headers. |
For remote servers, use the configuration shape and field names specified by the server and Cursor version you are running. Cursor describes OAuth support for remote server authentication; complete the provider’s login flow rather than embedding a personal password in JSON.

Reload Cursor and verify the tools
- Save
mcp.json. - Reload the Cursor window or restart Cursor if the server does not appear immediately.
- Open an Agent chat and inspect the available MCP tools list.
- Enable only the tools you need for the current task.
- Ask Agent to call a specific tool by name, or describe the task and let Agent select an enabled tool.
- Approve the call when Cursor prompts for permission. Cursor asks for approval by default; an auto-run setting can be enabled when that trade-off is acceptable.
Start with a harmless read-only request. Confirm the returned data, then test write or destructive operations separately. Tool names and argument schemas shown in the chat are more reliable than assumptions from a README.
Check configuration with the Cursor Agent CLI
If you use Cursor’s Agent CLI, it automatically detects and respects the MCP configuration. These commands help separate configuration problems from chat or permission problems:
cursor-agent mcp list
cursor-agent mcp list-tools <identifier>
cursor-agent mcp login <identifier>
cursor-agent mcp listlists configured servers and their status.cursor-agent mcp list-tools <identifier>shows the tools and argument names exposed by one server.cursor-agent mcp login <identifier>starts authentication for a configured server when its provider supports it.
Use the identifier exactly as the CLI reports it. If a server appears in the file but not in the list, fix the file location or JSON before investigating the server’s application code.
Security decisions that matter
Scope the server
Project configuration limits accidental exposure to repositories that need the integration. Global configuration is convenient but makes the tools available in every project that uses your account.
Limit credentials
Create keys with the smallest practical permissions and rotate them when a team member, machine or repository changes. Keep secrets out of Git, terminal transcripts and screenshots.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Review code and network access
An MCP server can read files, call APIs or perform actions on your behalf. Check its source or publisher, understand its requested permissions and verify where data is sent. For a remote endpoint, use TLS and the provider’s documented authentication flow.
Control automatic execution
Manual approval gives you a checkpoint before a tool runs. Auto-run reduces friction but removes that checkpoint, so enable it only for servers and tasks you trust.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
- Startup: a local
stdioserver may pay dependency and initialization time each time Cursor starts it. A lightweight wrapper and a prepared virtual environment can reduce that delay. - Network: SSE and Streamable HTTP depend on DNS, TLS, firewall and endpoint availability. A local process avoids those network hops but still depends on local runtimes.
- Concurrency: follow the server’s documented limits. Do not assume it can safely handle several simultaneous tool calls.
- Output size: ask for focused results. Large tool responses consume context and can slow Agent even when the server itself is fast.
- Billing: Cursor configuration itself does not establish a server’s API pricing. Check the connected provider’s plan, request limits and any per-call charges.
Troubleshoot common failures
The server is not listed
Likely causes: the file is in the wrong location, the JSON is invalid, or Cursor has not reloaded it.
Fix: confirm the project root and filename, validate braces and commas, run cursor-agent mcp list, then reload Cursor. Start with a minimal single-server file before adding more entries.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
“Command not found” or immediate process exit
Likely causes: the executable is not installed, Cursor’s GUI environment has a different PATH, or a required runtime is missing.
Fix: run the exact command outside Cursor, then use an absolute executable path or a wrapper script. Check the server’s stderr output and install the documented runtime and dependencies.
The server starts but no tools appear
Likely causes: protocol output is being corrupted by log text, initialization failed, or the account lacks permission.
Fix: move ordinary logs from stdout to stderr, inspect cursor-agent mcp list-tools <identifier>, and complete the provider’s login flow if required. Verify that the server version supports MCP tools rather than only resources or prompts.
Remote connection times out
Likely causes: an incorrect endpoint, blocked network access, TLS inspection, or an unavailable service.

Fix: copy the endpoint exactly from the provider, test reachability from the same machine, check Cursor’s network diagnostics under Cursor Settings > Network, and inspect the developer console and logs.
Authentication repeatedly fails
Likely causes: an expired token, wrong environment-variable name, missing OAuth login, or a key that lacks the required scope.
Fix: re-run cursor-agent mcp login <identifier> where supported, compare variable names with the server documentation, rotate the credential if necessary and grant only the required permissions.
Agent asks for approval every time
This is the default safety behavior. Enable auto-run in Cursor settings only after reviewing the server and deciding that automatic execution is appropriate. Otherwise, approve each call deliberately.
Or skip the browser setup
For screenshot work, ScreenshotNeo provides both an MCP server for AI agents and a website screenshot API. Its MCP tools include take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf, so Claude, Cursor or another MCP client can request captures without you maintaining a browser automation process.
If you only need a one-call capture, use the API documented at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/:
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.

- A server can be configured globally and overridden or supplemented at project scope; keep names distinct so tool selection is unambiguous.
- Changing an environment variable normally requires restarting or reloading the server process; editing the file alone may not update an already running process.
- Tool availability is separate from tool permission. A tool can appear in the list but still require approval, login or a provider-side role.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a local MCP server keep running after I close Cursor?
A server launched by Cursor through stdio is tied to Cursor’s process lifecycle; closing or fully restarting Cursor normally ends that process.
Can I use the same MCP server from Cursor’s desktop app and Agent CLI?
Yes. The Agent CLI detects and respects Cursor MCP configuration, so the same project or global file can be used by both interfaces.
Do remote MCP servers always require OAuth?
No. Cursor documents OAuth support for remote authentication, but the required method depends on the server. Follow that server’s endpoint and credential instructions.
