To print a webpage without a URL, date, or page number, turn off the browser’s headers-and-footers option in Print Preview. In Microsoft Edge, open More settings and clear Headers and footers. In Firefox, clear Print headers and footers. Chrome and Chromium browsers expose the same control in the print dialog, although its location and wording can vary by version and operating system.
This removes metadata added by the browser. It does not remove a website’s own navigation bar, advertising, newsletter panel, or footer; those require reader mode, an editing extension, or print-specific CSS if you control the site.
What is appearing in the printed header and footer?
There are two different sources of unwanted material:

Browser-generated metadata is controlled by the print dialog, not by ordinary webpage styles. Conversely, CSS can hide elements authored by the page but cannot reliably switch off the browser’s URL, date, or page-number text.

Microsoft Edge: remove URL, date and page numbers
- Open the page in Edge.
- Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS, or choose Print from the browser menu.
- In the preview panel, expand More settings.
- Clear Headers and footers.
- Check the preview. The URL, date, title, and page numbers should disappear.
- Choose your printer, or select the PDF destination to save a clean PDF.
Edge also offers Margins (Default, None, Minimum, or Custom), scale, paper size, orientation, page range, and a background-graphics switch. Margins affect layout, but the header/footer checkbox is the direct control for browser metadata. A physical printer may impose a non-printable edge; Microsoft gives about 0.25 inches (6.35 mm) as an example, while the actual minimum varies by printer.
If the page itself is cluttered
Where available, open the page in Edge’s Immersive Reader before printing. Reader mode removes much of the site chrome and presents the article in a simpler layout. It is a workaround for page-authored clutter, not a replacement for disabling browser headers and footers.
Firefox: clear “Print headers and footers”
- Open the webpage in Firefox and start printing.
- In print preview, expand More settings.
- Clear Print headers and footers.
- Adjust margins, scale, paper size, orientation, and background printing as needed.
- Review every page in the preview, then print or save to PDF.
Firefox’s wording is explicit: Print headers and footers. If the page contains elements that remain after this switch is cleared, those elements belong to the webpage. Mozilla points to the Print Edit WE extension for removing or rearranging page content before printing; extension availability and support can change, so install it only from a source you trust.
Chrome and other Chromium browsers
Chrome’s automatically generated margin content can be turned off in the print dialog. Open Print Preview, locate the control for headers and footers, and switch it off before printing. The exact placement and label can differ between Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera, and managed installations.

When there is no visible checkbox
Inspect the Margins setting and the preview. Chrome’s page model reserves a page margin around the printable area; generated header and footer text occupies that space. Setting margins to zero—or small enough that no room remains—prevents the generated content from displaying, according to Chrome’s printing documentation. This is a layout workaround, not a substitute for the explicit switch when that switch is available. Verify that text is not clipped at the physical edge of your paper.
Save a clean PDF
- Open Print Preview with Ctrl+P or Command+P.
- Choose Save to PDF or the equivalent PDF destination.
- Disable headers and footers in the dialog.
- Set paper size, orientation, margins, scale, and page range.
- Save, then open the PDF and inspect its first and last pages.
Remove the website’s own header, footer, and navigation with CSS
If you own the webpage, use a print-only stylesheet. The @media print block applies only to paper and PDF output, while @page sets page dimensions and margins.

}Replace the selectors with the classes or IDs used by your site. You may also hide cookie prompts, sticky toolbars, share controls, and print buttons. Keep the article’s readable width, headings, links, and images intact; hiding a wrapper that contains the article will produce blank pages.
CSS cannot remove browser metadata
Even perfect print CSS does not reliably control the browser-generated URL, date, title, or page number. Ask readers to clear the print-dialog option as well. For managed Edge installations, administrators can use the PrintHeaderFooter policy on Windows and macOS (supported in Edge 77 and later). A disabled policy prevents headers and footers; an enabled policy forces them on. The policy can be mandatory or recommended and uses the corresponding registry or preference value.

Troubleshooting print headers and footers
The URL still appears
Return to Print Preview and expand More settings. Confirm the browser’s headers-and-footers switch is off for this print job. Some system print dialogs have a second set of options; check both the browser preview and the system dialog.

The date or page number remains but the URL is gone
Different browser versions expose metadata controls separately or preserve a system-printer preference. Reopen the advanced print settings, disable every header/footer field, and preview multiple pages. If no switch is available, reduce margins while watching for clipping.
The site logo or navigation still prints
That content is page-authored. Use reader mode, an editing extension, or add selectors to your @media print CSS. Clearing browser headers and footers cannot remove it.
Text or images are cut off
Choose a supported paper size, try Minimum or Custom margins, reduce scale slightly, and check orientation. Hardware printers have a non-printable area, so a zero-margin preview may still be clipped on paper.

Enable Background graphics in the print dialog if the design requires them. Background printing increases ink or toner use and may be disabled by an organization’s policy.

A managed computer forces headers on
Ask your administrator whether Edge’s PrintHeaderFooter policy is enabled. A mandatory policy overrides an individual user’s preference; only an administrator can change it.

Usually not with a single universal control. Browsers commonly group URL, date, title, and page numbers as generated header/footer content. Check the individual fields your browser exposes, then verify the preview.

Does saving as PDF use the same setting?
Yes. PDF output is generated through the same print-preview controls, so clear headers and footers before saving.
Why does a blank margin still appear?
Margins can remain because of the browser’s page layout, your CSS @page rule, or the printer’s physical non-printable area. Metadata may be gone even when a margin remains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will disabling headers and footers change the webpage itself?
No. It changes only the current print or PDF job; the live webpage and its normal browser view remain unchanged.
Can a website force its URL into my printout?
A site can display its own URL as page content, but browser-generated URL text is controlled by the browser or an administrator policy.
