The quickest way to capture part of a Windows screen is Windows logo key + Shift + S. Choose a snip mode, select the area, then use the Snipping Tool preview to copy, edit, or save the image. For a full-screen image saved directly as a file, press Windows logo key + PrtScn; Windows stores it in PicturesScreenshots.
Choose the shortcut that matches what you need
| What you want | Shortcut or tool | Where the result goes |
|---|---|---|
| A selected part of the screen | Windows + Shift + S | Snipping Tool capture, ready to edit, copy, or save |
| The whole screen as a file | Windows + PrtScn | PicturesScreenshots |
| Only the active window | Alt + PrtScn | Clipboard; paste with Ctrl + V |
| A capture with annotation and editing controls | Open Snipping Tool from Start | Snipping Tool window, where you can copy, save, or share |
| A keyboard without a PrtScn key | Fn + Windows + Space Bar may work | Depends on the device’s hardware |
These methods are documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s instructions cover rectangular, freeform, window, and full-screen snips in Snipping Tool (Microsoft Support).
Capture part of the screen with Windows + Shift + S
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft describes this as opening the Snipping Tool overlay for an image snapshot.
- If the overlay shows capture modes, choose the one you need: rectangular, freeform, window, or full screen.
- For a rectangular snip, drag from one corner of the required area to the opposite corner. For freeform, draw around the object you want.
- For window capture, select the window after the overlay highlights available windows. For full screen, select the full-screen mode.
- After the capture, open the Snipping Tool notification or window. From there you can annotate, crop, copy, save, or share the image.
Rectangular versus freeform
Rectangular mode is best for a predictable, clean screenshot of a panel, dialog, or region. Freeform mode is useful when the subject has an irregular outline. The selection itself determines what is included; anything outside it is not part of the snip.
Window and full-screen modes
Use window mode when you want one application without manually dragging around its borders. Use full-screen mode when the overlay offers it and you want the entire displayed screen captured through Snipping Tool.

Use the full Snipping Tool app
- Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch the app.
- Choose the capture mode from the tool’s controls.
- Select New (or the equivalent capture command) and make the selection or choose the target window.
- Use the Snipping Tool window to mark up the image, crop it, copy it, save it, or share it.
The app is useful when you need to inspect the result before saving. Microsoft also documents automatic saving for captures and a Save as command. Snipping Tool settings can change whether automatic saving is enabled and can change the folder used for saved captures (Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation).
Save the entire screen directly to a file
- Press Windows logo key + PrtScn at the same time.
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open, rename, move, or edit the image like any other file.
This shortcut is different from a clipboard-only capture: the documented result is a file in the Screenshots folder. If you cannot find it, check that you are looking at the Windows user account that made the capture and verify the Snipping Tool or screenshot save settings have not redirected automatic saves.
Capture only the active window with Alt + PrtScn
- Click the window you want so it is the active window.
- Press Alt + PrtScn.
- Open an app that accepts images, such as an editor, document, or email composer.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the capture.
Microsoft documents Alt + PrtScn as copying the active window to the clipboard, not as automatically creating a file. You therefore need to paste it into another application and use that application’s save command (Microsoft Support).

What happens to a screenshot: clipboard, preview, or file?
Clipboard result
Alt + PrtScn places the active-window image on the clipboard. The image is available for pasting with Ctrl + V; it is not the same as a file already stored in Pictures.
Snipping Tool result
Windows + Shift + S opens the capture overlay and presents the result through Snipping Tool. Use the app to copy it, annotate it, or save it. Automatic-save behavior and the destination can be adjusted in Snipping Tool settings.
Saved-file result
Windows + PrtScn is the direct file shortcut. Look in PicturesScreenshots, as described in Microsoft’s keyboard-shortcut guidance (Microsoft Support).

If your keyboard has no PrtScn key
On some laptops and compact keyboards, Print Screen is combined with another key or omitted. Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a possible screenshot shortcut for devices without PrtScn, but whether it works depends on the hardware (Microsoft’s Print Screen shortcut guidance).
When PrtScn opens Snipping Tool instead
Windows shortcut behavior can vary with settings. Microsoft documents that pressing PrtScn can be configured to open screen snipping. If the key does not produce the result you expect, open Windows settings and inspect the keyboard or accessibility option controlling the Print Screen key, then use Windows + Shift + S when you want the overlay immediately (Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut documentation).
Troubleshoot a screenshot that is missing or different than expected
The shortcut appears to do nothing
- Try Windows + Shift + S instead of a standalone Print Screen key; it explicitly opens the Snipping Tool overlay.
- On a laptop, hold Fn if the keyboard combines Print Screen with another function.
- Open Snipping Tool from Start and use New if a shortcut is being intercepted by the keyboard or another application.
You cannot find the full-screen image
- Check File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots after using Windows + PrtScn.
- Review Snipping Tool settings if you used the Snipping Tool and expected automatic saving. Microsoft notes that automatic-save behavior and the folder can be changed.
- Make sure you are checking the Pictures folder for the Windows account that took the capture.
You expected a file but received nothing to open
Alt + PrtScn is a clipboard operation. Paste it with Ctrl + V into a compatible app, then save from that app. It does not use the PicturesScreenshots workflow.

The capture includes the wrong window
For Alt + PrtScn, click the target window first so it is active. For Snipping Tool window mode, select the intended window after starting the snip rather than dragging a region around it.
You need a different shape or a quick annotation
Restart with Windows + Shift + S, select rectangular or freeform mode, and then use the Snipping Tool preview for markup or cropping before saving.

The Windows shortcuts above capture what is displayed on your local desktop. If your real task is generating repeatable screenshots of web pages from a URL, an API can remove browser setup and make the process scriptable. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is not a replacement for capturing an arbitrary local Windows desktop.
