How to Capture Scrolling Screenshots in Windows 11

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The quickest way to capture an entire webpage in Windows 11 is Microsoft Edge’s built-in Screenshot tool. Open the page, choose Screenshot from the page’s right-click menu (or from Edge Settings), press Ctrl+Shift+S, select the full-page option, then copy or save the result. For scrolling content that is not an ordinary webpage—such as a document, list, or application panel—use a utility such as ShareX or PicPick. Microsoft documents standard Snipping Tool modes, but its current documentation does not list scrolling capture.

Choose the method that matches what you need to capture

Windows 11 does not provide one universal scrolling-screenshot command for every application. The appropriate workflow depends on whether the content is a webpage in Edge or a scrollable window elsewhere.

Option Best for How it works Important qualification
ScreenshotNeo Automated webpage images from code or AI tools One API request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF Clean shots, only clean shots billed, and a $5 paid starting plan; it does not replace a desktop-window capture
Edge Screenshot A full webpage open in Microsoft Edge Captures the complete page in the browser Availability and behavior can vary by device, market, and Edge version
ShareX Scrollable windows and regions outside a normal webpage Scrolls a selected region and stitches successive screenshots Fixed, animated, or hover-changing elements can disrupt stitching
PicPick Scrolling Window Long pages, documents, lists, and panels Captures content beyond the visible screen Official help documents the mode but does not provide a comparative reliability benchmark

There is no controlled cross-tool reliability comparison in the cited documentation. Treat the table as a fit guide, not a performance ranking.

Capture a full webpage with Microsoft Edge

Edge’s documented Screenshot feature is the simplest route when the content is an ordinary webpage. It can capture the full page, let you mark it up, and then copy or save the image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the page. Start Microsoft Edge and navigate to the webpage you want to preserve.
  2. Open Screenshot. Right-click on the page and choose Screenshot, or open the corresponding Screenshot command from Edge Settings. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S.
  3. Select the full-page option. In the Screenshot interface, choose the option that captures the entire page rather than only the visible area.
  4. Review the result. Scroll through the preview and use Edge’s markup tools if you need to annotate it before exporting.
  5. Copy or save. Copy the image to the clipboard or save it to a file using the available command in the Screenshot panel.

The feature is specifically documented for webpages. Microsoft notes that availability and functionality may differ by device type, market, and browser version, so a missing command can reflect the installed Edge build or regional rollout rather than a mistake in your shortcut.

When Edge full-page capture is the right choice

  • The target is rendered as one webpage in Edge.
  • You want a built-in workflow without installing a separate capture utility.
  • You need quick markup, clipboard copying, or a saved image.

When Edge is not enough

Edge’s documented workflow is for webpages. It is not presented as a general method for capturing every scrollable Windows application. For a long document, list, settings panel, or another non-browser window, use a scrolling-capture utility instead.

Why Snipping Tool usually does not make a scrolling screenshot

Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool documentation lists rectangle, freeform, window, and fullscreen snips. The documentation consulted does not list a scrolling-capture mode. That means repeatedly dragging a Snipping Tool rectangle is not the same as producing one automatically stitched, full-length image.

Use Snipping Tool for its documented single-area modes. Switch to Edge Screenshot for a full webpage or to ShareX/PicPick when the content extends beyond one visible screen.

Capture a scrolling window with ShareX

ShareX documents a scrolling-capture mode that selects a region, scrolls through it, and combines the successive screenshots into one result. It is useful for content that is not a standard browser page.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  1. Open the ShareX main window or its tray menu.
  2. Choose Capture → Scrolling capture. You can also assign a hotkey if you use the workflow regularly.
  3. Select the region containing the scrollable content. Keep the selection as narrow as practical while including the complete panel you need.
  4. Allow ShareX to begin scrolling and stitching. According to its documentation, capture starts automatically and continues to the end.
  5. Inspect the resulting image before sharing or deleting the source capture.

Read ShareX’s status indicator

  • Green: the capture completed successfully.
  • Yellow: matching was partial, so inspect the image for seams or missing sections.
  • Red: the first images could not be combined and capture stopped.

Reduce stitching problems

ShareX compares successive screenshots and appends newly exposed content. Static page elements, animations, and hover effects can change between frames and interfere with that matching. Move the pointer away from interactive controls to reduce hover-triggered changes. If a fixed sidebar or overlay confuses the comparison, select only the content region you actually need. These steps reduce known sources of failure, but they do not guarantee a seamless result; always inspect the completed image.

ShareX describes itself as free and open-source Windows screenshot software and lists scrolling capture among its methods. See its scrolling screenshot documentation and product page.

Capture long content with PicPick’s Scrolling Window

PicPick calls its feature Scrolling Window. Its help documentation specifically covers scrollable content beyond the visible screen, including long webpages, documents, lists, and panels.

  1. Open the window or document you want to capture and make sure the scrollable area is visible.
  2. Start PicPick’s Scrolling Window capture mode.
  3. Select or activate the target window or region as PicPick requests.
  4. Let the utility move through the content and assemble the result.
  5. Choose an output destination: PicPick documents sending the image to its editor, saving automatically, copying it to the clipboard, or sending it to an external program.

PicPick’s official help establishes the feature and output choices, but it does not publish a controlled comparison showing that it is more reliable than ShareX. Choose it when its editor, autosave, clipboard, or external-program workflow fits your process.

Decide between Edge, ShareX, and PicPick

Use Edge when the target is a webpage

Edge requires no additional capture utility and offers a documented full-page command, markup, copy, and save actions. Start here for a page already open in Edge.

Use ShareX for a selectable region in another application

ShareX is designed around region-based scrolling and exposes a status indicator that helps you identify a failed or partial stitch. It is the more natural fit when you need to capture only one panel rather than an entire window.

Use PicPick when output handling matters

PicPick’s documented destinations—editor, automatic save, clipboard, and external program—can be useful when the capture must immediately enter another application or a repeatable save workflow.

Do not infer universal compatibility

The cited pages establish documented features and caveats, not that any one utility works in every Windows application. A custom control, protected window, animation, or unusual scrolling implementation may behave differently. Capture a small representative section first and check the assembled image before relying on it for records or publication.

Troubleshoot an incomplete or missing scrolling screenshot

The Edge Screenshot command is not visible

Confirm that you are right-clicking inside the webpage and try Ctrl+Shift+S. You can also look for Screenshot in Edge Settings. Microsoft states that availability and functionality vary by device type, market, and browser version; update Edge through its normal settings and retry. If the command remains unavailable, use a dedicated utility for the page or another supported workflow.

The result contains only the visible viewport

In Edge, choose the full-page option rather than the visible-area option. In ShareX or PicPick, start the scrolling-specific mode instead of a normal region or window snip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ShareX stops immediately with a red status

ShareX says red means the first images could not be combined. Reselect the region so it excludes unnecessary fixed elements, move the cursor away from hover-sensitive controls, and try again with animations or overlays out of the selected area where possible.

The stitched image has jumps, duplicates, or gaps

Yellow indicates partial matching in ShareX. Inspect where the mismatch begins, narrow the region, and remove animated or hover-changing content from the selection. If the page cannot remain visually stable, try PicPick or capture smaller sections separately.

A fixed sidebar or chat panel appears repeatedly

Fixed elements can remain in every frame and confuse stitching. Select the main scrolling content instead of the entire window. If you need the sidebar too, expect to review the result manually for duplicated sections.

The capture ends before the bottom

Check whether the selected area is the actual scroll container. Many interfaces scroll an inner panel rather than the outer window. Start the capture with that panel selected; if the application uses a nonstandard control, a utility may not be able to advance it consistently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The image looks correct but is not the format you need

Use Edge’s save or copy action, ShareX’s normal output workflow, or PicPick’s documented editor, autosave, clipboard, and external-program destinations. Choose the destination before closing the capture result so you do not lose the assembled image.

Quality, reliability, and file-handling practices

  • Inspect before sharing: stitching tools can report partial matching or stop after an early failure.
  • Keep the selection purposeful: excluding fixed sidebars, animated adverts, and hover effects gives the stitcher fewer changing pixels to compare.
  • Prefer the browser-native method for browser-native content: Edge’s full-page workflow avoids stitching a webpage from repeated viewport screenshots.
  • Preserve the source when accuracy matters: save the assembled image and, where appropriate, retain the original page or document so a missing section can be recaptured.
  • Check sensitive material: a scrolling image may include content below the fold—such as account details or private messages—that was not visible at the start.

Or skip the browser setup

For automated webpage captures, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It accepts PNG, JPEG, and WebP output and can capture a full page with lazy images loaded. Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor, then more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Each of those cleanup steps can be disabled.

Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently asked questions

Can I annotate an Edge full-page capture?

Yes. Edge’s Screenshot workflow supports markup before you copy or save the captured page.

What do ShareX’s yellow and red indicators mean?

Yellow means matching was partial. Red means the first images could not be combined and capture stopped, so inspect the result or retry with a cleaner, narrower region.

Can PicPick send a scrolling capture directly to another application?

Yes. PicPick documents sending the result to its editor, saving automatically, copying it to the clipboard, or sending it to an external program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Edge’s full-page Screenshot work on every Windows 11 device?

Microsoft says availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and Edge browser version. If the command is absent, use the documented right-click, Settings, and Ctrl+Shift+S paths after updating Edge, or switch to a dedicated utility.

Why should I inspect a ShareX capture marked green?

Green indicates that ShareX completed the capture, but visual changes such as animation or hover effects can still affect the assembled image. Review the result before relying on it.

Is ScreenshotNeo intended for capturing an arbitrary Windows application window?

No. ScreenshotNeo is an API for webpages and PDFs. Use Edge, ShareX, or PicPick for a local Windows application; use ScreenshotNeo when you want an automated webpage capture.
