There is no universal social-media header size. Build the canvas for the exact placement, keep important content inside a central safe area, and inspect the uploaded result on both desktop and mobile. For the principal placements, use Facebook Page 851 × 315 px, LinkedIn personal profile 1584 × 396 px, X 1500 × 500 px, YouTube channel banner 2560 × 1440 px, and Pinterest Business profile cover at least 800 × 450 px (16:9).
Quick size chart for 2026
The figures below refer to specific placements, not to an entire platform. “Recommended” means a platform or current design guide suggests the canvas; it does not necessarily mean the service enforces that exact pixel count.
| Platform and placement | Recommended canvas | Minimum or limits | Format and crop notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook Page cover | 851 × 315 px | 400 × 150 px minimum | Common recommendation. Reported display sizes are about 820 × 312 px on desktop and 640 × 360 px on smartphones, so preview both. |
| Facebook event cover | 1920 × 1005 px | No official Meta pixel specification is published in the referenced guidance | Secondary-guide recommendation; treat it as a practical starting point rather than a Meta requirement. |
| LinkedIn personal profile cover | 1584 × 396 px (4:1) | Not stated | JPG or PNG, under 8 MB. LinkedIn notes that appearance changes with browser-window size and screen resolution. |
| LinkedIn Company Page cover | Conflicting recommendations: 1512 × 256, 1128 × 191, or 4200 × 700 px | Verify in the current LinkedIn Pages help or upload interface | Do not reuse the personal-profile specification for a Company Page. |
| X profile header | 1500 × 500 px (3:1) | Not stated | JPG, GIF, or PNG. Animated GIFs are not supported. |
| YouTube channel banner | 2560 × 1440 px | 2048 × 1152 px minimum; 6 MB maximum | Centered safe-area guidance varies by stated canvas. Verify the current YouTube upload preview before publishing. |
| Pinterest Business profile cover | At least 800 × 450 px (16:9) | 800 × 450 px minimum | Business accounts only. Pinterest may crop the image during upload. |
These dimensions combine directly published recommendations for LinkedIn personal profiles, X and Pinterest Business with current cross-platform design references for the other placements. A platform’s upload interface is the final authority when a secondary guide and the interface disagree.
Facebook header sizes
Page cover
Start with an 851 × 315 px canvas. The commonly cited minimum is 400 × 150 px, but working at the recommended canvas gives you more room for readable type and high-resolution exports. The same artwork can be cropped differently: guidance reports approximately 820 × 312 px on desktop and 640 × 360 px on a smartphone. Keep a logo, URL, face, and headline away from the outer edges and check the live Page on both device classes.

Event cover
Use 1920 × 1005 px as a practical recommendation for an Event cover. It is not an official Meta pixel requirement: the referenced guidance says Meta does not publish one and attributes this working size to a secondary recommendation. Expect additional cropping in event listings and mobile views.

LinkedIn banner sizes
Personal profile
LinkedIn’s directly published recommendation is 1584 × 396 px, a 4:1 ratio. Upload a JPG or PNG below 8 MB. Browser-window width and screen resolution can change the visible crop, and the profile photo occupies part of the left side. Put the person’s name, job title, logo, or call to action in the central and right portions rather than behind the avatar.
Company Page
Company-banner figures in current third-party guides conflict materially: 1512 × 256 px, 1128 × 191 px, and 4200 × 700 px are all listed. They cannot safely be presented as one definitive 2026 specification. Open LinkedIn’s current Pages help or the Company Page upload dialog, note the dimensions it requests, and design to that placement separately from a personal profile.
X (formerly Twitter) header size
X recommends a 1500 × 500 px header. Static JPG, GIF, and PNG files are accepted; animated GIFs are not supported. The profile image and interface controls can cover the lower-left area, so keep essential text and marks toward the center and right. After uploading, inspect the profile at a narrow mobile width as well as a desktop browser.
YouTube channel banner dimensions
Use a 2560 × 1440 px canvas when possible. The current secondary guidance lists 2048 × 1152 px as the minimum and 6 MB as the maximum file size. YouTube displays the banner across televisions, desktop pages, and mobile layouts; only a centered portion is consistently visible. Safe-area numbers differ depending on whether the guide is describing the recommended or minimum canvas (figures such as 1546 × 423 px and 1235 × 338 px are both published for different stated canvases). Treat the upload preview as decisive: center the channel name and any text inside the shown safe area, then test all three device previews.
Pinterest Business profile cover
Pinterest Business Help specifies at least 800 × 450 px and recommends a horizontal 16:9 image. This cover is a Business-account feature, and Pinterest can crop the image during upload. Use a larger 1600 × 900 or 2400 × 1350 working canvas if your source artwork allows it, while preserving the same ratio; the minimum requirement still applies to the final file.

Platforms without a matching header placement
The current cross-platform guide does not list a dedicated Instagram profile cover. Do not force a banner into the avatar slot: the cited 320 × 320 px figure is a profile-picture upload recommendation, not a header size.
Google Business Profile
A 720 × 720 px recommendation (250 × 250 px minimum) describes profile imagery, not a wide social header. Include it in a production checklist only when you are also preparing business-profile photos.
Snapchat and Bluesky
Secondary guidance lists 375 × 278 px for a Snapchat profile banner and 3000 × 1000 px for a Bluesky banner. Because these figures are not directly verified platform specifications here, check each service’s current upload screen before committing a campaign template.
How to design one header that survives every crop
- Identify the placement. Record platform, account type (personal, Page, Business, event, or channel), and the device previews you must support.
- Create the native canvas. Set the exact recommended width and height from the table. Do not resize a Facebook Page design into a LinkedIn profile banner; their ratios are different.
- Add a safe area. Draw temporary guides around the central region. Keep logos, faces, prices, dates, URLs, and small type inside it. Leave edge artwork decorative.
- Reserve interface zones. Account avatars, navigation controls, and profile buttons commonly overlap corners. Place important content away from the lower-left on X and LinkedIn and away from the center edges on YouTube.
- Export conservatively. Use JPG for photographic scenes and PNG for flat artwork or transparency. Check each platform’s file-size limit; LinkedIn requires under 8 MB and the cited YouTube guidance lists 6 MB maximum.
- Preview at real display sizes. Open the upload preview, then view the published profile while logged out or in a private window on desktop and mobile. Look for clipped words, low contrast, avatar overlap, and unreadable type.
- Keep an editable master. Save the layered source and a crop-safe version. If a platform changes its UI, you can move guides and export again without rebuilding the artwork.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Using one “universal” banner: replace it with separate artboards for each placement and account type.
- Designing to the full rectangle: move essential elements into the safe area and use the edges for background texture only.
- Confusing a minimum with a recommendation: label every template with its source and whether the number is required, minimum, or suggested.
- Ignoring account type: Facebook Page, Facebook Event, LinkedIn personal profile, and LinkedIn Company Page are different placements.
- Trusting a desktop preview: check a narrow viewport; mobile crops can remove an entire line of text.
- Uploading an unsupported animation: X does not support animated GIF headers; export a static frame.
- Exceeding file limits: reduce JPEG quality moderately, flatten unnecessary layers, or resize only after confirming the platform’s minimum.
- Relying on conflicting guides: for LinkedIn Company Pages and YouTube safe areas, use the current first-party upload dialog as the final check.
Automating crop checks with screenshots
For a campaign with many variants, publish a private preview page containing the banner at desktop and mobile breakpoints. Capture each viewport and compare the results before uploading. A screenshot API can make this repeatable, but the screenshot must represent the actual CSS crop, not just the source image.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture a preview URL with a single request, including full-page or element captures, custom viewport and device settings, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits for selectors or network idle, and hiding selectors such as consent banners. Its cookie/consent acceptance removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Use the API documentation at screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all 63 options. The following requests are complete starting points; replace the example URL with your own accessible preview page.

Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
For production checks, add a chosen viewport, a wait for the banner selector, and a cache TTL appropriate to your preview workflow. Use signed links when a result must appear in a public <img>, asynchronous jobs and signed webhooks for long captures, and bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call. Custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, blocked resource types, transparent backgrounds, resizing, PDF settings, HTML/CSS-to-image, click-before-capture, and a usage API are available on every plan. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
Cost and reliability planning for automated previews
ScreenshotNeo’s Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans are Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is included on every plan. For a small design team, reserve captures for changed variants, use caching with a deliberate TTL, and read the billing headers so failed or cached requests do not enter your cost calculations.

FAQ
What is the safest place for a logo?
Keep it in the central safe area, then confirm that the platform’s avatar, buttons, and mobile crop do not overlap it. The exact safe area differs by placement.
Can I use a higher-resolution file than the recommendation?
Usually, but stay within the platform’s file-size and format limits and preserve the required aspect ratio. A larger canvas does not eliminate responsive cropping.
Which LinkedIn size should a company use?
Do not assume the 1584 × 396 personal-profile value applies. Company Page recommendations conflict, so use LinkedIn’s current Pages upload guidance for the specific account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1500 × 500 px a universal social header size?
No. It is X’s recommended profile-header canvas; Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Pinterest use different placements and ratios.

Why does my header look correct on desktop but cropped on mobile?
Responsive layouts use different visible regions and may overlay avatars or controls. Keep essential content in the safe area and inspect both device previews.
Does Instagram have a profile-cover banner?
The current guide used here does not list a dedicated Instagram cover placement; its 320 × 320 px recommendation is for a profile picture.
