Use a short, accurate description of what the image shows. Write it in lowercase, separate words with hyphens, and keep the real file extension. For example, black-kitten-on-window.jpg is a useful filename; IMG00023.JPG, image1.jpg, and 1.jpg are not. Google describes filenames as “very light clues,” so naming helps, but page text, captions, image titles, computer vision, and especially useful alt text provide much more context.

The naming formula

Build the filename from the visible subject, then add only a truthful differentiator when it helps someone distinguish similar files.

  1. Start with the subject: ceramic-coffee-mug.
  2. Add one or two visible details: ceramic-coffee-mug-blue-side-view.
  3. Use lowercase words and hyphens: ceramic-coffee-mug-blue.jpg.
  4. Keep the extension accurate: a JPEG must end in .jpg or .jpeg, a PNG in .png, and so on.

This produces a readable, maintainable URL without turning the filename into a keyword list. The description must match the pixels: do not claim a color, product, date, or feature that is not visible.

Why filenames help, and why they are not a ranking shortcut

Google says a filename can give only “very light clues” about an image’s subject. Search systems also examine nearby page copy, captions, image titles, visual content and alt text. Put the image beside relevant text instead of relying on the URL alone.

Renaming DSC4536.jpg to chocolate-chip-cookie.jpg makes the asset easier for editors, developers and users to identify. It may improve the signals available to image search, but official guidance does not promise a particular ranking increase. A descriptive name cannot compensate for an irrelevant page or misleading alternative text.

Hyphens, underscores and safe characters

Choose hyphens

Use blue-ceramic-mug.jpg, not blue_ceramic_mug.jpg. Google’s filename guidance says search engines interpret hyphens as spaces and generally do not recognize underscores as word separators.

Prefer lowercase ASCII

Lowercase ASCII letters, numbers and hyphens are a practical default. They avoid case-sensitive duplicate paths such as Mug.jpg and mug.jpg, and they are easy to type in deployment scripts. Avoid spaces, punctuation, emoji and long strings of symbols. If a localized site uses non-ASCII names, apply correct URL encoding and use a consistent convention.

Keep the real extension

The suffix should describe the file actually served. Common supported image formats include JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG and AVIF. Renaming a PNG to .jpg does not convert it; it creates a misleading URL and can break processing or caching.

How long should an SEO filename be?

There is no official character limit or required word count. Keep the name as short as possible while preserving the subject and a useful distinction. Usually that means a few words rather than a sentence.

  • Good: blue-ceramic-mug-front.jpg
  • Too vague: photo.jpg
  • Too long: blue-ceramic-mug-front-on-white-table-in-sunny-kitchen-taken-march-2026.jpg
  • Spammy: best-cheap-mug-buy-mug-coffee-mug-blue-mug.jpg

Drop dates, camera IDs and inventory numbers unless they genuinely distinguish the asset in your publishing system. For a product catalog, a factual model or SKU can be useful; it should supplement, not replace, a readable subject.

Filename versus alt text, caption and page copy

These fields have different jobs.

Element Job Example
Filename Readable asset identifier and a light subject clue dalmatian-puppy-fetch.jpg
Alt text Accessible replacement for people who cannot see the image; describes its purpose in context “Dalmatian puppy playing fetch”
Caption Visible explanation or attribution for all readers “Luna retrieves the ball in the park.”
Nearby page text Explains why the image matters on this page “Training a puppy to retrieve a toy”

Google calls alt text the most important image metadata attribute. Write it for people first and avoid repeating keywords. If an image is purely decorative, use the site’s accessibility practice for decorative images rather than inventing search-targeted wording.

When the image is a link

For a linked image, the alt attribute also supplies anchor text. A concise action such as add enchiladas to your cart tells users and search systems what the link does. Empty or vague alt text leaves the link without useful language context.

Examples you can copy

Situation Filename Matching alt text
Product photo blue-ceramic-mug-front.jpg “Blue ceramic mug, front view”
Instruction screenshot wordpress-media-library-upload.jpg “WordPress media library showing the upload button”
Decorative flourish section-divider.svg Empty alt, according to the site’s accessibility implementation
Linked purchase image running-shoes-cart.jpg “Add running shoes to your cart”

These pairings are examples of alignment, not guaranteed ranking recipes. A gallery can use meaningful differentiators such as red-sneaker-side.jpg, red-sneaker-sole.jpg and red-sneaker-box.jpg instead of meaningless sequential names.

A reliable workflow for new images

  1. Describe only what is visible. Identify the main subject, action and, where useful, viewpoint or color.
  2. Check the page purpose. A screenshot used in a WordPress tutorial should name the interface and task, not merely say screen.jpg.
  3. Normalize the string. Convert to lowercase, replace spaces with hyphens, remove punctuation and collapse repeated hyphens.
  4. Remove unsupported claims. Delete adjectives such as “best,” “cheap” or “professional” unless the image itself clearly communicates them and they are relevant.
  5. Set alt text separately. Explain the image’s function in this page’s context; do not copy the filename mechanically.
  6. Add a caption when readers need explanation. Captions are visible and can provide details the filename cannot.
  7. Place the image near relevant text. Context helps both accessibility and image understanding.
  8. Preview the delivered asset. Confirm the extension, dimensions, compression and URL after the CMS uploads it.

Renaming files already published

Changing a filename changes the image URL. Before renaming a live asset, inventory references in HTML, CSS, feeds, structured data, sitemaps and social cards. Upload the new file, update every reference and redirect the old URL when your server or CDN supports image redirects. Keep one consistent image URL when the same image is reused, as Google recommends; multiple equivalent URLs split maintenance and caching effort.

Do not rename files merely to insert extra keywords. A useful change is one that corrects a camera default, fixes an inaccurate description or establishes a durable convention. Test old article pages, responsive variants and cached copies after deployment.

Scaling a large image library

Batch rules

For thousands of files, automate the mechanical parts: lowercase conversion, whitespace replacement, punctuation removal and extension preservation. Have a person or an image-classification review approve the subject words. Automation should not invent visual claims.

Duplicates and galleries

Use a meaningful differentiator for repeated views, such as blue-mug-front.jpg and blue-mug-handle.jpg. The official guidance supports descriptive, consistent names but does not require a particular numbering format. If a sequence is necessary for sorting, append it after the description: blue-mug-front-02.jpg.

Localized sites

Translate filenames when separate language sites genuinely serve local readers. Keep each locale’s convention consistent and encode URLs correctly. Do not mix several languages in one directory without a documented rule.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Camera defaults: Replace IMG_1234.JPG with a factual subject description before upload.
  • Keyword stuffing: Remove repeated commercial terms and keep only words that describe the image.
  • Filename used as alt text: Write natural, contextual alt text rather than reading the hyphenated slug aloud.
  • Wrong extension: Inspect the actual MIME type and export format; renaming alone does not convert an image.
  • Case and space inconsistencies: Standardize on lowercase hyphenated names to avoid fragile links.
  • Decorative images with invented descriptions: Mark them decorative according to your accessibility implementation.
  • Broken links after a rename: Search all references, update them, and redirect the old URL where appropriate.
  • Overlong names: Remove unverifiable details, redundant words and dates that do not distinguish the asset.

If your workflow needs screenshots of web pages, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.

Final checklist

  • Does the name identify the visible subject?
  • Are words lowercase and separated with hyphens?
  • Is the extension the actual format?
  • Did you avoid generic names, keyword lists and unverifiable claims?
  • Does alt text describe the image’s purpose for people?
  • Is the image near relevant page text and captioned when useful?
  • Will renaming preserve references, redirects and a consistent URL?

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every image filename contain a target keyword?

No. Include a keyword only when it naturally and accurately describes the visible subject; never turn the name into a repeated keyword list.

Are underscores technically invalid?

They can work in URLs, but Google’s guidance says hyphens are interpreted as spaces and underscores generally are not, so hyphens are the safer convention.

Can I rename an image after publishing?

Yes, but treat it as a URL migration: update references, test pages and redirect the old URL where your infrastructure supports it.

Do filenames matter more than alt text?

No. Google identifies alt text as the most important image metadata attribute; filenames provide only light clues.
