The steps below distinguish the retired OneNote for Windows 10 app from the desktop OneNote workflow so you can use the command that matches your installation.
The shortcut in one glance

Microsoft documents this sequence for OneNote for Windows 10 in its OneNote keyboard-shortcuts reference. Current Microsoft OneNote documentation also identifies Windows+Shift+S as the Windows screen-clipping shortcut.
How to take a screenshot and paste it into OneNote
- Show the content. Open the web page, application, document, or other material you want to capture and arrange it on screen.
- Start the snip. Press Windows key + Shift + S at the same time. The display dims and the snipping controls appear.
- Select the region. Click and drag around the portion you need. Release the mouse button when the rectangle covers the content. The selection is copied automatically.
- Return to OneNote. Switch to the notebook and page where the image belongs. Click in the page at the exact insertion point; OneNote pastes at the current cursor location.
- Paste. Press Ctrl + V. The clipping is inserted as an image. You can then move or resize it like other pictures on the page.
The Windows shortcut begins outside OneNote, so the final paste is essential. Pressing the shortcut alone does not insert anything into a note; it only places the image on the Windows Clipboard.

Use OneNote’s built-in Screen Clipping command instead
OneNote desktop has a second documented route that starts from the note itself. Microsoft describes it in Insert a screen clipping on a page.
- Open the target notebook and page.
- Click where the clipping should appear.
- Choose Insert > Screen Clipping on the ribbon.
- When the screen dims, drag over the area to capture.
- Release the selection. OneNote inserts the image on the page and also copies it to the Windows Clipboard.
Microsoft lists Alt + N + R as a keyboard sequence for starting this OneNote screen-clipping command. Ribbon names and shortcut behavior can vary by OneNote edition, so use this route only when the command is present in your desktop installation.
Which method should you use?

Both approaches produce a static image. The clipping is not linked to the original web page or document, so later changes to that source do not update the picture in OneNote, as Microsoft explains in its screen-clipping guidance.

Version and support details you should know
“OneNote for Windows 10” refers to Microsoft’s separate Windows 10 app, not simply OneNote running on a Windows 10 computer. Microsoft states that support for the OneNote for Windows 10 app ended in October 2025. The Windows+Shift+S sequence is documented for that app, but Microsoft’s current OneNote for Windows materials also describe the same Windows snipping shortcut.
If your menus do not match the labels here, check the application name in OneNote’s account or settings screen. The desktop application normally exposes the ribbon command Insert > Screen Clipping; the Windows shortcut is controlled by Windows and may still work even when the OneNote interface differs.
Working with the captured image
Place it precisely
Click in the page before pressing Ctrl + V. If the cursor is inside a text container, OneNote inserts the picture at that position. After insertion, select the image to drag it, resize it from a corner, or open its picture tools.

Capture only what is useful
Include the title, controls, or surrounding context that explains the screenshot, but exclude unrelated browser tabs, notifications, and personal data. Windows+Shift+S captures the selected rectangle exactly; it does not create a live or refreshable view.
Keep a second copy when necessary
The clipping is on the Windows Clipboard immediately after capture. Pasting into OneNote preserves it in the page, while pasting into another application can provide a second copy. The Clipboard itself is temporary, so do not rely on it as the only storage location.

Nothing happens when you press Windows+Shift+S
- Press and hold the Windows key, then press Shift and S together; a brief or mistimed combination may not trigger the overlay.
- Try the shortcut with another window active. If the overlay appears there, the issue is limited to the original application or its keyboard handling.
- On managed work computers, an administrator policy or keyboard utility may intercept Windows shortcuts. Check with your IT administrator rather than installing an unapproved snipping tool.
The screen dims, but the image is missing in OneNote
- Make sure you completed a selection and released the mouse button. The Clipboard is populated only after a region is selected.
- Switch to the intended page, click once in the page, and press Ctrl + V. The shortcut does not paste automatically.
- If you copied something else after taking the snip, capture it again and paste immediately.
Ctrl + V pastes text or an older picture
Another application may have replaced the Clipboard contents. Repeat Windows+Shift+S, select the region, and paste before copying anything else. If the problem continues, test a paste into a blank document to determine whether the Clipboard contains the new image.

The Insert command is not visible
You may be using an edition whose ribbon is organized differently, or an app version that does not expose the desktop command. Use Windows+Shift+S followed by Ctrl + V, which does not depend on OneNote’s ribbon. Microsoft’s documented Insert workflow is specific to the OneNote desktop instructions linked above.
The capture includes confidential information
Cancel the selection with Esc and start again with a tighter rectangle. Review the image before sharing the notebook; a clipping is a permanent static copy until you delete or replace it.

- Static result: A clipping never refreshes when the source changes. For changing dashboards or pages, take a new capture whenever the information changes.
- Visible content: Windows captures what is rendered on the screen. Content below a page’s scroll position must be captured separately unless the source provides its own export.
- Clipboard dependency: The Windows shortcut succeeds first by creating Clipboard content; OneNote insertion is a separate step. This separation explains why a valid capture can still be pasted into the wrong page.
- Support status: Because the Windows 10 app is out of support, moving to a currently supported OneNote edition is sensible if you need ongoing fixes or matching documentation.
