How to Use a Google Search Console MCP Server with Claude (OAuth and Service Accounts)

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single “Google Search Console MCP server.” Several independently maintained projects use similar names and have different installers, authentication methods, tools and permissions. This guide covers the lionkiii google-searchconsole-mcp project with its npm and interactive OAuth workflow, then explains the separate FlorianBruniaux google-search-console-mcp service-account implementation. Choose one project first; do not mix their commands or configuration.

What you need before connecting Claude

  • A Claude Desktop installation that supports MCP servers and permission to edit its configuration file.
  • Access to at least one Google Search Console property. The Google identity or service account used by the server must already be a user of that property.
  • Node.js and npm for the lionkiii project, or uvx and a Google Cloud service account for the FlorianBruniaux project.
  • A clear distinction between read-only analytics and indexing submission. The latter can require Owner permission in the service-account implementation.

Community-maintained servers are not established here as officially endorsed by Google or Anthropic. Review each repository’s current documentation, code and privacy statements before using it with production credentials.

Option 1: lionkiii’s npm server with interactive OAuth

The following is the workflow documented by lionkiii for Claude Desktop. It uses a browser sign-in and stores tokens in ~/.gsc-mcp/tokens/, according to that project’s README.

Install the package

npm install -g google-searchconsole-mcp

Use a Node.js installation that can run global npm packages. If your shell cannot find the command afterward, reopen the terminal or check that npm’s global binary directory is on PATH.

Authenticate with Google

gsc-mcp-auth
  1. Run the command in your terminal.
  2. Complete the browser-based Google login.
  3. Grant the Search Console access requested by the project.
  4. Return to the terminal and confirm that authentication finishes successfully.

The repository says the resulting tokens are saved under ~/.gsc-mcp/tokens/. Protect that directory as you would any local credential store. The authenticated Google account must have access to the property you later ask Claude about.

Add the server to Claude Desktop

Open Claude Desktop’s MCP configuration file and merge this entry into the existing mcpServers object:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "google-search-console": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "google-searchconsole-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Do not replace unrelated server entries. The example uses npx so Claude can launch the package. If your configuration already contains mcpServers, add only the inner google-search-console property and keep valid JSON commas.

Restart and verify

  1. Save the configuration.
  2. Quit and reopen Claude Desktop.
  3. Start a new conversation and check that the Google Search Console tools are listed as available.
  4. Ask for data from a property to which the authenticated account has access.

The README models prompts such as:

  • “What are my top performing pages this month?”
  • “Find keywords where I have high impressions but low CTR.”
  • “Compare my search performance this month vs last month.”
  • “Is this URL indexed? Any issues?”

What the npm project documents as available

The lionkiii repository lists 13 tools. Its documented inventory includes Search Console analytics for clicks, impressions, CTR and position, broken down by query, page, country, device or date; URL inspection; sitemap listing; top-page reports; high-impression/low-CTR opportunities; period comparisons; brand-query analysis; keyword trends; analytics export; and filters for search appearance or search type. Tool names and availability can change, so inspect the current repository before designing an automated workflow.

Opportunity filtering is an example, not an SEO law

The project documents an example filter using at least 100 impressions, CTR below 3% and a position in the top 20 over 28 days. Treat those values as that tool’s sample behavior, not a universally validated SEO threshold. Ask Claude to show the date range, property and filters it used before acting on the result.

Option 2: FlorianBruniaux’s service-account server

FlorianBruniaux’s google-search-console-mcp is a different implementation with a different credential path. It documents launching gsc-mcp through uvx, a Google Cloud service account and an environment variable pointing to the service-account JSON file.

Prepare Google Cloud and Search Console

  1. Enable the Google Search Console API in the Google Cloud project.
  2. Create a service account and download its JSON key using your organization’s security policy.
  3. Add the service account’s email address as a user on every Search Console property it must query.
  4. Grant only the permission needed. The guide associates Full permission with its analytics and inspection functions.
  5. For this project’s submit_url and submit_batch indexing functions, the guide says Owner permission is required.

Enabling an API does not grant a service account access to a property. Missing property access is a project-specific explanation for 403 responses in the guide.

Configure Claude Desktop

The guide’s Claude example passes an absolute key path and skips OAuth:

      "args": ["gsc-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "GSC_SERVICE_ACCOUNT_PATH": "/absolute/path/to/service-account.json",
        "GSC_SKIP_OAUTH": "true"
      }
    }
  }
}

Use the real absolute path, keep the JSON key outside public repositories and restart Claude Desktop after saving. The guide says its GA4 environment variable is optional and needed only for GA4 tools. Do not copy this configuration into the npm project: the two projects are not interchangeable.

Read access versus indexing submissions

Use case Credential model Permission documented by the project Operational note
Analytics and URL inspection Interactive user OAuth in lionkiii; service account in FlorianBruniaux Authenticated identity must access the property; FlorianBruniaux associates Full permission with analytics and inspection Read results are limited to properties that identity can access
URL or batch indexing submission FlorianBruniaux service-account implementation Owner, according to its guide Use only when the property and organizational policy permit write actions

Quotas and limits: qualify the numbers

The FlorianBruniaux setup guide, accessed in 2026, reports a default daily limit of 25,000 queries for the Search Console API per project and 200 requests for the Indexing API per project. These are repository-reported defaults for that described setup, not confirmed universal Google limits. Check Google’s current official quota documentation before capacity planning. The same guide warns that its own in-memory indexing counter resets when the server restarts.

Google’s general MCP authentication guidance explains that supported methods vary by application and documents Application Default Credentials, OAuth client credentials and authorization headers. It also notes that OAuth scopes restrict accessible resources and bearer tokens normally expire after one hour. That guidance is context only; it does not prove that either local server uses every one of those methods.

Troubleshooting

Claude shows no Search Console tools

  • Confirm the JSON is valid and the server is nested under mcpServers.
  • Restart Claude Desktop completely, not just the conversation.
  • Run the configured command manually: npx -y google-searchconsole-mcp or uvx gsc-mcp.
  • Check that Node/npm or uv is installed for the operating-system user launching Claude.

Authentication opens the wrong Google account

Run gsc-mcp-auth again in the intended browser account, then verify that account is a Search Console user for the requested property. Existing tokens under ~/.gsc-mcp/tokens/ may need to be handled according to the project’s documented reset procedure.

403 or property-not-found responses

For the service-account project, add the service account email directly to the property and verify the exact property type and URL prefix. The guide associates 403 errors with missing or restricted access. For OAuth, confirm that Claude is using the account that owns or has access to the property.

Indexing submission is unavailable

Analytics access does not imply write access. In the FlorianBruniaux guide, submission tools require Owner rights. Check that you are using that implementation, that the service account is an Owner, and that the API is enabled.

Results look incomplete or stale

Ask Claude to state the property, search type, dimensions and date range. Search Console reports can differ when filters or time windows change. Confirm the server’s current tool documentation rather than assuming every similarly named package supports the same dimensions.

Practical operating guidance

  • Start with read-only questions and a narrow date range.
  • Have Claude return the query parameters and sample rows before exporting or making SEO decisions.
  • Separate reporting credentials from credentials allowed to submit indexing requests.
  • Rotate or revoke credentials using your Google account or Cloud security process when a team member or machine changes.
  • Pin package versions in controlled deployments and review updates before restarting a production automation.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is website screenshots rather than Search Console data, ScreenshotNeo provides a separate screenshot API and MCP server for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. A single request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install both Search Console projects at once?

You can run separate MCP servers, but their commands, credentials and tool inventories differ. Keep each configuration entry and authentication flow separate.

Does a Search Console API key alone grant property access?

No. The authenticated Google user or service account must be added to the specific Search Console property.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the quota figures guaranteed Google-wide limits?

No. The 25,000-query and 200-request figures are defaults reported by the FlorianBruniaux guide accessed in 2026; verify current official quotas before relying on them.
