Microsoft’s current instructions describe saving the capture as an image, but they do not guarantee that the file is encoded as JPG/JPEG or provide a format selector. If you need a genuine JPEG, verify the saved file and explicitly export it as JPEG in an image editor.
What Edge can and cannot guarantee
Edge’s built-in capture is the quickest way to turn a webpage into an image without installing software. It can include content below the visible viewport, so it is suitable for a whole-page capture rather than only what is currently on screen. The important limitation is format certainty: Microsoft’s Edge documentation says that a capture can be saved as an image, but the pages do not promise a JPG/JPEG encoding or document a control for choosing one.
- Need a screenshot of the whole document? Use Capture full page.
- Need only a portion? Use Capture area.
- Need a file that is definitely JPEG? Check the saved file and export it as JPEG if necessary; do not merely rename its extension.
Feature names, the shortcut, and availability can vary by device type, market, and Edge version. If you do not see Screenshot, use the menu route described below and check the troubleshooting section.
Save a full webpage as an image in Microsoft Edge

Open the page
Load the webpage in Microsoft Edge and wait until the content you want is visible. For a long article, begin at the page itself rather than selecting text or an individual image.

Open Screenshot (Web capture)
Select the … menu in the upper-right corner and choose Screenshot. In older Edge releases the command is labeled Web capture. You can also try Ctrl+Shift+S; Microsoft’s January 2, 2024 Edge instructions document that shortcut, although availability can differ by version and device.

Choose the capture scope
Select Capture full page to capture the complete document, including material below the viewport. Select Capture area and drag around a specific region when you only need part of the page.

Review the result
Use the preview to check that the top, bottom, and right edge of the page are present. A full-page capture is a single image of the rendered page; it is not a live document, so links and selectable text will not remain interactive.

Save the image
Choose the save option in the capture interface and select a destination on your device. If the interface offers a copy option, copying is useful for a quick paste, but saving creates the file you can convert and archive.

Confirm the actual encoding
Inspect the file’s properties or open it in an image application that reports its format. The filename extension alone is not proof of the encoding. If the result is PNG, WebP, or another format, use that application’s Export or Save as command and choose JPEG/JPG. Open the exported file once more to verify that the conversion produced a JPEG.
How to make sure the result is a true JPG
Do not just rename the extension
Changing .png or .webp to .jpg changes the label, not the underlying encoding. Programs that inspect the file header may still identify the original format, and some viewers will refuse to open the renamed file.
Export through an image editor or converter
- Open the saved Edge capture in an image editor or a converter you trust.
- Choose Export, Save as, or the equivalent command.
- Select JPEG or JPG as the output format.
- Set a quality level if the application asks for one. Higher quality generally creates a larger file; lower quality creates more compression artifacts around text and sharp edges.
- Save to a new filename, then verify the resulting file type rather than relying only on its extension.
Keep the original capture until you have checked the JPEG. JPEG conversion is a separate step from Edge’s page capture, so retaining the original gives you a lossless source for another export later.

Use the full-page command when a reader needs the whole article, landing page, or documentation page. Use an area capture when browser chrome or unrelated page sections should be excluded. Use Snipping Tool when the target is a visible window or desktop region rather than the complete webpage.

Use Windows Snipping Tool for visible or selected content
Snipping Tool is included with Windows and is a practical fallback for screen, window, rectangular, and other selected-area captures. Open Snipping Tool, choose the capture mode, make the selection, edit if needed, and save the snip. It is not the best choice for a webpage that extends far below the viewport: Edge Screenshot is the documented whole-page option.
Why Edge Print is not a webpage-to-JPG converter
Press Ctrl+P, or open the Edge menu and choose Print, when you need a print layout. The dialog exposes print controls such as scaling and background graphics. Where a PDF destination is available, you can create a PDF and then convert that PDF to an image with a separate tool. The print dialog itself is not documented as a direct JPG exporter, and a PDF conversion can change pagination, margins, and the appearance of long pages.
Third-party full-page extensions
Some Edge Add-ons listings advertise full-page capture with JPG export. For example, the PageSaver listing advertises webpage-to-PDF or image capture, while a search result reported that the extension could not be installed because it was incompatible with the browser version at that time. Treat such listings as feature claims, not as a compatibility guarantee, privacy assessment, or endorsement. Check the current browser compatibility, permissions, maintenance history, and privacy policy before installing an extension. For most one-off captures, Edge’s native tool avoids those additional decisions.
Troubleshooting Edge-to-JPG captures
Screenshot or Web capture is missing
Open the … menu and look for either Screenshot or Web capture. Microsoft notes that feature availability and functionality vary by device, market, and browser version. If neither command appears, the current Edge build or device may not expose it; use Snipping Tool for a visible region or an approved extension that supports your version.

Ctrl+Shift+S does nothing
The shortcut is documented but not universal across every release and device. Use the menu command instead. If the menu command is also absent, follow the availability guidance above rather than assuming the keyboard is faulty.
The saved file is not JPG
That behavior is consistent with the documentation: Edge promises an image save, not a guaranteed JPEG encoding. Inspect the format and export through an image editor or converter. Do not solve it by renaming the suffix.
The capture contains only the visible portion
Reopen Screenshot and choose Capture full page, not Capture area. The area mode intentionally records only the rectangle you draw.
The output looks like a printed page
You probably used Print or converted a PDF. Return to Screenshot for a rendered webpage image; reserve Print for a paper-oriented layout or PDF workflow.

An extension cannot be installed
Browser compatibility may have changed. Remove the extension and use Edge Screenshot, Snipping Tool, or a currently compatible alternative after reviewing its permissions and privacy terms.

- Full-page capture can load lazy images; you can also capture one element by CSS selector.
- Choose a device preset or custom viewport, retina scale, dark mode, timezone, geolocation, cookies, headers, user agent, or Authorization.
- Wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle; click an element before capture; hide selectors; and block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types.
- Use custom CSS or JavaScript, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, and the usage API or OpenAPI specification when you are building a service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a JPG preserve the webpage’s links and text selection?
No. JPG is a raster image. It records the pixels visible in the capture, not the page’s hyperlinks, accessibility structure, or selectable text.
Can I keep the original and a JPEG version?
Yes. Save the Edge capture first, then export a separate JPEG. Keeping the original lets you create another format or quality level later without recapturing the page.
