If File Explorer shows generic icons instead of picture previews, first switch the folder to Medium icons or a larger icon view. Then open File Explorer Options → View and clear Always show icons, never thumbnails. That checkbox path is documented in a Microsoft Community answer, while Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance confirms that changing layouts controls whether thumbnails or standard file-type icons appear.
If the problem is limited to OneDrive, make the files available locally. For a network share, an administrator may need to change a thumbnail policy. Do not confuse a missing folder thumbnail with the separate Preview pane, which Windows began disabling for internet-downloaded files after the October 14, 2025 security updates.
First, identify which preview is missing
Windows has two different preview features:
- Folder thumbnails: small pictures that replace generic icons in a File Explorer listing.
- Preview pane: a larger preview shown beside the file list when you choose View → Show → Preview pane.
The repairs are different. The steps below begin with folder thumbnails. A later section covers the Preview pane security change.
Fix thumbnails in a local Windows folder
1. Choose a thumbnail-capable layout
- Open File Explorer and browse to the affected folder.
- Select View on the command bar.
- Choose Medium icons, Large icons, or Extra large icons.
List, Details, and small-icon layouts may show ordinary file icons instead of useful image tiles. Microsoft’s File Explorer overview and its accessibility documentation explain that layouts change how items are displayed.

2. Turn off “Always show icons, never thumbnails”
- In File Explorer, select the three-dot menu and choose Options. On some Windows builds, open the classic View menu and choose Options.
- In Folder Options, open the View tab.
- Clear Always show icons, never thumbnails.
- Select Apply, then OK.
This exact checkbox route comes from a user-contributed Microsoft Community answer, so treat it as community guidance rather than a comprehensive Microsoft repair procedure.
3. Restart the view if it does not refresh
Move to another folder and back, or close and reopen the File Explorer window. If the folder still shows icons after the setting change, continue with the cache step below rather than repeatedly changing the same option.
Clear the Windows thumbnail cache
Windows stores generated previews in a thumbnail cache. Disk Cleanup can remove that cache so Windows creates fresh previews. Microsoft documents the cleanup category but does not promise that deleting it will solve every thumbnail problem.
- Open Start and search for Disk Cleanup.
- Choose the Windows system drive, normally C:, and select OK.
- In the list of files to delete, check Thumbnails.
- Review the selected categories carefully; leave unrelated categories unchecked if you do not want them removed.
- Select OK, then Delete Files.
- Reopen File Explorer and allow time for previews to be rebuilt.
The official storage guidance is at Free up drive space in Windows. The first rebuild can be slower in a folder containing many images or videos.

Repair missing OneDrive thumbnails
OneDrive has extra conditions because a file may exist only in the cloud. Apply these checks when local folders show thumbnails normally but OneDrive folders do not.
Use a medium-or-larger icon view
Open the OneDrive folder in File Explorer and select View → Medium icons or a larger size. OneDrive’s own troubleshooting page lists this as the first check.
Make an online-only file local
- Look at the OneDrive status symbol. A blue cloud means the item is online-only.
- Right-click the file or folder.
- Choose OneDrive → Always keep on this device (the wording can appear directly as Always keep on this device).
- Wait for the status to change to a locally available check-mark state, then refresh the folder.
With Files On-Demand, an online-only file is not downloaded until you open it and is unavailable without an internet connection. Microsoft explains these states in Save disk space with OneDrive Files On-Demand for Windows. Marking a file for offline use can consume local disk space.
Check OneDrive’s documented preview limits
Microsoft states that OneDrive thumbnail previews are unavailable for PDF files and for images larger than 100 MB. That is a product limit, not evidence that your Windows cache is broken. The limit is described in Fix missing thumbnails in OneDrive.

When a network folder shows only icons
If local folders work but a mapped drive, NAS, or company share does not, policy may be the cause. Microsoft’s ADMX_Thumbnails Policy CSP documents settings that can make File Explorer display icons instead of thumbnails on network folders and controls thumbnail caching in hidden thumbs.db files.
- Record whether the same file displays a thumbnail after copying it to a local folder.
- Note whether every user sees the issue or only your account.
- Ask your organization’s administrator to inspect the applicable thumbnail and caching policies.
Avoid registry edits copied from generic troubleshooting pages. On a managed device, a policy may be deliberately enforcing icon-only behavior, and a local change can be overwritten or violate your organization’s configuration.
Do not confuse thumbnails with the Preview pane
Starting with security updates released on or after October 14, 2025, Windows automatically disables the Preview pane feature for files downloaded from the internet. Microsoft says the change is intended to prevent a vulnerability in which previewing a malicious file containing external HTML references could leak NTLM hashes. The support article, published October 22, 2025 (KB 5070960), applies to the Windows versions and Windows Server releases listed there.
Read Microsoft’s explanation at File Explorer automatically disables the preview feature for files downloaded from the internet. This security behavior affects the larger side preview, not the small thumbnail tile in a folder. Do not disable the protection as a routine thumbnail fix. If you trust a downloaded file and need a preview, use the file’s properties or your organization’s approved unblocking process rather than weakening system security globally.

Choose the next step by symptom
| What you see | Most useful next check | Relevant limitation |
|---|---|---|
| No thumbnails in any local folder | Use Medium-or-larger icons, clear “Always show icons, never thumbnails,” then clear the cache with Disk Cleanup. | Cache deletion is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed repair. |
| Only OneDrive items are affected | Use a larger icon view and choose “Always keep on this device.” | Online-only files are not available offline. |
| OneDrive PDFs or very large images have no preview | Check the file type and size. | OneDrive documents no previews for PDFs or images over 100 MB. |
| Only a network or work-share folder is affected | Test a copy in a local folder and ask the administrator to inspect policy. | Network-folder policies can enforce icon-only display. |
| Only the side Preview pane fails for a downloaded file | Read the October 2025 Microsoft security guidance. | This is separate from folder thumbnails. |
Common errors and practical fixes
The checkbox is already clear, but icons remain
Confirm the folder is using Medium icons or larger, then clear the thumbnail cache. If only one file type fails, record the extension and test a different file type in the same folder; the available sources do not establish a universal fix for format-specific thumbnail-handler failures.
OneDrive says the file is available, but no preview appears
Wait for synchronization to finish, refresh the folder, and verify the file is not a PDF or an image above OneDrive’s 100 MB preview limit. If the same file previews after copying it outside OneDrive, the storage location—not the image itself—is the important diagnostic clue.
Disk Cleanup does not list Thumbnails
Run Disk Cleanup against the Windows system drive rather than a removable or secondary drive. If the category still is not offered, skip this step and continue with the view, OneDrive, or policy checks; Microsoft does not require cache deletion for normal thumbnail display.
A work computer reverts to icons after every change
That pattern is consistent with centrally managed policy. Capture the affected path and Windows edition/build, then contact the administrator instead of applying registry scripts.

Preview pane warnings appear only for downloaded files
That behavior can be the post-October-2025 security change. It does not mean the thumbnail cache is corrupt, and turning on the Preview pane will not restore the small folder tiles.

Does clearing the thumbnail cache delete my original photos or videos?
No. Disk Cleanup removes generated preview cache files; it does not remove the source files in your folders or OneDrive.
Why can a file open normally even though its thumbnail is missing?
Opening a file and generating a folder thumbnail are separate operations. A file can be readable while its cached or policy-controlled preview is unavailable.
The Bottom Line
For ordinary local folders, use Medium-or-larger icons, clear the “Always show icons, never thumbnails” option, and rebuild the cache if needed. Treat OneDrive availability, network policies, and the Preview pane’s post-October-2025 security behavior as separate cases.
