On Android, press Power + Volume down together. On a Chromebook, press the Screenshot key, or press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows to open the capture toolbar. These controls belong to Android and ChromeOS; Gmail does not have a separate screenshot command.
Choose the workflow that matches your device

Before using either method, display the exact Gmail content you need. Close menus, expand the relevant message, and scroll to the position you want included.
Take a Gmail screenshot on Android
Standard screenshot
- Open the Gmail app and display the message, conversation, inbox, or settings screen you want to capture.
- Press the Power button and Volume down button at the same time. Release them promptly rather than holding them.
- Wait for the screenshot preview or animation. Tap the preview if you need to crop, mark up, share, or delete the image.
- Find the saved image in Google Photos at Collections > On this device > Screenshots. If the device does not use Photos, open the Gallery app and its Screenshots folder.
If Power + Volume down does not work
Hold the Power button for a few seconds. When the power menu appears, tap Screenshot. Button placement and menus vary by manufacturer, so use the phone maker’s support instructions if neither method is available.
Capture a long Gmail message
On Android 12 and newer, most screens that support scrolling offer an extended capture:

- Take a normal screenshot.
- Tap Capture more in the screenshot preview.
- Drag the crop guides until the full portion of the email you need is selected.
- Save or share the resulting image.
Capture more is not guaranteed for every app or screen. If Gmail does not offer it, capture successive sections and keep the images in order, or use Gmail’s print command when a printable document is more useful than an image.
Take a Gmail screenshot on Chromebook
Open the capture toolbar
- Open Gmail in Chrome and display the inbox or message you want.
- Press the Chromebook’s Screenshot key, if the keyboard has one.
- If there is no Screenshot key, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key looks like a rectangle with two vertical lines. From the Settings app, you can also open Settings > Screen Capture.
- With an external keyboard that lacks Show windows, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the alternative shortcut.
Select what to capture
The capture toolbar offers three modes:
- Full screen: records everything visible across the selected display.
- Partial screen: lets you drag around only the Gmail area you need.
- Window: captures the selected application window.
Choose a mode, complete the selection, and confirm the capture. Chromebook screenshots are copied to the clipboard and saved in Downloads by default. Open the Files app to move or rename the image. In Screen Capture settings, you can change the save folder for future screenshots.
Capture only the information you intend to share
Prepare the message
- Scroll to the beginning of the relevant content and include the sender, subject, and date when they are needed for context.
- Hide unrelated messages, browser tabs, and notification previews.
- Expand collapsed quoted text only when it is part of the evidence you need.
- For a conversation, capture enough of each message to preserve the order and sender labels.
Protect private information
Gmail screenshots can expose email addresses, phone numbers, order details, account identifiers, and message contents. Crop or draw over information before sending the file. Keep the original in a private location if you may later need an unedited record, and share a redacted copy with others.
Confidential mode does not block screenshots
Gmail confidential mode can remove recipients’ options to copy, print, download, and forward message text and attachments. It does not prevent a recipient from photographing the screen or taking a screenshot. Google Gmail Help states: “While confidential mode can help prevent recipients from accidentally sharing emails, they can still take screenshots or photos of your emails.” Treat confidential mode as a control against some in-app actions, not as screenshot protection.

When printing is better than a screenshot
Use printing when you need a paginated, readable record rather than a screen image. On a computer, open the email, click More (the three-dot menu), and choose Print. Android also supports printing a message or conversation; the printer must be able to receive data over Wi-Fi or a mobile network. Confidential mode may prevent printing message text and attachments, so a print option may be unavailable even when an on-screen screenshot is still possible.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot shortcut changes the volume or power state
Press the two Android buttons simultaneously and release quickly. If that still fails, use the Power-menu Screenshot option and check the manufacturer’s support instructions.
No Capture more button appears on Android
Extended capture requires Android 12 or newer and a screen that permits scrolling. Gmail may not expose the control for every view. Capture separate sections or print the message instead.
The Chromebook captured the wrong area
Reopen the toolbar and choose Partial screen or Window rather than Full screen. For a partial capture, drag from one corner to the opposite corner and verify the selection before confirming.
The Chromebook file is missing
Check the Files app’s Downloads folder. If the save location was changed in Settings > Screen Capture, look in that selected folder. The image may also still be available on the clipboard for immediate pasting.

The image contains private data
Do not forward the original. Crop or redact the exposed fields in the preview editor or an image editor, then inspect the final copy at full size before sharing.
A ScreenshotNeo request returns an unexpected result
Check the URL, access key, timeout, and response headers. A private Gmail page normally requires authorized cookies or headers; a bot check, blank page, timeout, or failed load is reported in the response and is not billed as a clean shot. Can I screenshot a Gmail email in confidential mode?
Yes. Confidential mode does not stop screenshots or photos, although it can restrict copying, downloading, forwarding, and printing.
Where are Android Gmail screenshots saved?
Usually Google Photos at Collections > On this device > Screenshots. Devices without Photos generally use the Gallery app’s Screenshots folder.
Can a Chromebook capture only part of Gmail?
Yes. Open Screen Capture and choose Partial screen, then drag around the region to save.
What if I need a paper copy instead?
Use Gmail’s More > Print command on a computer, or Android’s print workflow when a compatible network printer is available.
