Why HTML Images Don’t Show in Chrome and How to Fix Them

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When an HTML image is missing in Chrome, the browser is usually following a specific rule: the rendered URL is wrong, the response is not an image, or a security policy blocked it. Start with the live <img> element, then use DevTools to identify the failed request and its exact error. The fix should match that evidence rather than changing attributes at random.

Start with the image Chrome actually rendered

Inspect the page in Chrome, right-click the affected area, and choose Inspect. In the Elements panel, examine the live <img> element—not just the template, component, or CMS source that generated it.

  • Confirm that src contains a nonempty URL.
  • If the element uses srcset, check every candidate URL and the sizes value. Chrome may select a different candidate from the one you expected.
  • Look for spelling, capitalization, directory, and file-extension errors. Web servers commonly treat photo.JPG and photo.jpg as different names.
  • Make sure the URL points to the image file, not to the page that should contain it. An empty source, a source resolving to the current document, corrupt image data, and unsupported formats are all documented image-loading failure cases in MDN’s <img> reference.

Copy the selected URL and open it in a new tab. If that tab shows an error page, a login screen, or text instead of an image, the HTML element is not the primary problem: the address, server response, redirect, or access rule needs investigation.

Keep useful fallback text while troubleshooting. A meaningful alt value is shown when an image cannot load because of a network failure, content blocking, or a dead link. If the dimensions are known, set width and height so the layout reserves the correct space while the image loads.

Use Network to find the failing request

  1. Open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Option+I (macOS).
  2. Select Network, enable the recording control, and reload the page with the panel open. Reloading is important because DevTools only sees requests made while it is recording.
  3. Choose the Img resource filter. Chrome’s Network reference also documents filters for MIME type, URL scheme, and mixed-content status.
  4. Click the failed row and inspect Headers, Preview, and Response. Record the requested URL, status code, final URL after redirects, response Content-Type, and any warning shown in the row.

These observations separate several otherwise similar symptoms:

What you see Likely branch Correction to investigate
No image request appears The element has no usable source, is hidden by script, or the selected srcset candidate is not what you expected. Correct the rendered attributes and any code that sets them.
404, 410, or a similar not-found response The path, filename, deployment location, or case does not match the file. Fix the URL or publish the file at the requested location.
200 response but preview is text or HTML The server returned an error document, login page, redirect target, or other non-image payload. Fix routing, authentication, redirects, or the server response; verify the MIME type.
Request is blocked before a usable response Chrome applied CSP, CORS, mixed-content, or another browser policy. Read Console and Issues, then change only the policy or request setting implicated by the message.
Response is an image but Chrome cannot decode it Data or image metadata is corrupt, or the format is unsupported. Regenerate or convert the file and serve a format Chrome supports.

A successful HTTP status alone does not prove that an image can render. The body and Content-Type must describe valid image data. Conversely, a browser policy error can prevent use even when the server would otherwise return a valid file.

Read Console and Issues before changing security settings

Open Console and then Issues after reloading. Chrome’s Issues panel groups browser-detected problems, including mixed content, CORS, and Content Security Policy (CSP) violations, and links affected resources to relevant DevTools views.

Content Security Policy blocks

If the message names CSP, inspect the page’s Content-Security-Policy header or meta policy. The img-src directive lists image origins that may be used. If img-src is absent, default-src is the fallback, as described in MDN’s img-src documentation. Add the specific image origin required by your application, then retest. Do not replace a restrictive policy with a broad wildcard merely to silence the warning.

CORS and the crossorigin attribute

CORS matters to this diagnosis when the image request uses crossorigin (or equivalent JavaScript image handling). Chrome then makes a CORS request, and the remote server must return an Access-Control-Allow-Origin value that permits your page. If the server does not grant access, the Console reports a CORS error. Remove crossorigin only when your application does not need cross-origin pixel access; otherwise configure the image server for the requesting origin. The MDN image reference explains this behavior.

Mixed content on an HTTPS page

If the document is loaded over HTTPS but an image URL uses HTTP, inspect the mixed-content warning and the exact request mechanism. Change the image URL to HTTPS when the host supports it. Mixed-content handling is not identical for every source form: some HTTP image requests can be upgraded, while other cases—including certain srcset and <picture> selections—may be blocked. MDN’s mixed-content guidance describes these distinctions. Do not treat a warning as proof that every HTTP image will behave the same way.

Fix the markup and resource branches

Correct a path or selected candidate

Use a root-relative or absolute URL that matches the deployed file:

<img src="/images/team/photo.jpg" alt="The product team" width="1200" height="800">

For responsive images, verify each candidate independently:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
<img src="/images/photo-800.jpg"
     srcset="/images/photo-800.jpg 800w, /images/photo-1600.jpg 1600w"
     sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px"
     alt="A mountain trail" width="1600" height="1067">

Check the URL Chrome actually chose in Network; editing only the fallback src will not fix a broken candidate selected from srcset.

Serve valid image data

Download the response or open it directly and check that it is a real PNG, JPEG, WebP, or another format supported by your target Chrome version. A response with an image extension can still contain an HTML error page. Regenerate files that have been truncated or corrupted and configure the server to send the matching MIME type, such as image/png or image/jpeg.

Handle redirects, authentication, and hotlink rules

The provided evidence cannot identify a server’s particular redirect, permission, or hotlink configuration. Use the failed Network row to see whether the request ends at a login page, an unexpected host, or a denial response. Make the image publicly readable where appropriate, supply the required application credentials through the supported mechanism, or change the URL to the canonical asset location. Avoid embedding a session-only URL in long-lived HTML.

Retest without hiding the real failure

  1. Make one targeted change.
  2. Reload with DevTools open and clear the Disable cache option only when you need to rule out a stale response; do not leave it enabled when measuring normal behavior.
  3. Confirm that the image request now has the expected URL, status, MIME type, and preview.
  4. Test a fresh incognito window or another network only after the original request works, so caching and extensions do not obscure the cause.
  5. Keep the alt text and dimensions in the final markup even after the image renders.

Common symptoms and precise next actions

  • Broken-image icon with no useful Console message: inspect the live attributes, then open the selected URL directly. This usually narrows the problem to a path, response, or file-format issue.
  • Network shows a red request and 404: compare the requested path character by character with the deployed file, including capitalization and build-directory prefixes.
  • Network shows 200, but Preview is an HTML page: inspect redirects and authentication. Correct the route or make the asset response return image bytes.
  • Console says “Refused to load the image”: identify the CSP directive and permit only the intended host in img-src or its default-src fallback.
  • Console reports CORS: check whether crossorigin is present and configure the remote server’s allow-origin response for the page’s origin.
  • Console reports mixed content: use an HTTPS asset URL and verify the selected srcset or <picture> candidate, not just the visible fallback.
  • Only some browsers fail: compare the actual response format, policy message, and selected candidate in each browser rather than assuming Chrome is defective.

If your goal is to obtain a dependable screenshot rather than debug a page’s own image markup, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page-range controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameters used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.

FAQ

Is a missing image always a Chrome bug?

No. The evidence usually points to the rendered URL, server response, file data, or a browser security policy. DevTools identifies which branch applies.

Should I add crossorigin to every image?

No. Add it only when your application needs a CORS-enabled image, such as certain canvas operations, and ensure the remote server grants the requesting origin.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the image URL work when opened directly but not inside my page?

The page context may impose CSP, mixed-content, or CORS rules that do not apply in the same way to a top-level navigation. Check Console, Issues, and the image request’s policy details.

Can alt text make the image appear?

No. It provides an accessible fallback when the image cannot load; it does not repair the URL, response, or security policy.
