To turn a screenshot into text, open it in your device’s built-in OCR tool, select the recognized words, and copy them. Use Live Text in Photos on a supported iPhone or iPad, Google Lens on Android, or Text Actions in Windows Snipping Tool. For a screenshot inside a PDF or a large batch, use an OCR workflow designed for documents. Always compare the result with the image before trusting names, numbers, URLs, punctuation, or line breaks.
The exact buttons depend on your operating-system version, device model, language, and region. The steps below cover the documented routes and explain what to do when recognition fails.

iPhone and iPad: copy text with Live Text
Apple Support documents Live Text for text in photos, videos, and images found online. A saved screenshot is handled like any other image in Photos.
Steps
- Open Photos and open the screenshot.
- If the text-detection control is not already highlighted, tap it. The control appears when the system detects text.
- Touch and hold a word. Drag the selection handles until the required passage is highlighted.
- Tap Copy, then paste into Notes, Messages, a document, a terminal, or your destination app.
Live Text requires an iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or later running iOS 15 or later. Apple documents video recognition from iOS 16 onward. Recognition and Live Text availability vary by language and region, so an eligible phone can still lack the control for a particular language.

If Live Text does not appear
- Make sure the screenshot actually contains machine-readable characters rather than a very small, blurred, or heavily compressed rendering.
- Update iOS, reopen the image, and try tapping the text-detection control again.
- Crop to the relevant paragraph and try the cropped image. A larger view of fewer words gives the recognizer less competing detail.
- Check the language and region settings if Live Text works for some images but not others.
Android: use Google Lens on a saved screenshot
Google’s Android Lens help describes opening an uploaded image, selecting text or a region, and choosing Copy. On many devices the route starts in Google Photos; on others it starts in the Google app. Manufacturer software can change the icon or menu name.
Steps in Google Photos
- Open Google Photos and select the screenshot.
- Tap Lens. If Lens is not visible immediately, open the image actions or overflow menu.
- Choose the text-selection mode, then drag over the words or tap Select all text when offered.
- Tap Copy and paste the result into the app you need.
Google specifically recommends selecting a smaller region when you need more specific Lens results. For a long screenshot, process one column, paragraph, or label at a time instead of asking Lens to interpret the entire image.
Translate text instead of copying it
Google documents a screenshot-translation path of Photos > screenshot > Lens > Translate. A Pixel Camera help page lists Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish for its documented screenshot-translation feature. That list is specific to that feature; it is not a general statement that Lens recognizes only those languages.
Windows: extract text with Snipping Tool
Microsoft documents OCR through the Snipping Tool’s Text Actions feature and recommends Snipping Tool for screenshots rather than PowerToys Text Extractor. PowerToys remains an option when the text is in other application or media content and you need to capture a region from it.

Steps
- Open Snipping Tool and capture the screen region containing the words, or open the saved screenshot in the tool when your Windows version offers that option.
- Choose Text Actions. The tool analyzes the image and exposes recognized text.
- Copy all text or select the portion you need, then paste it into the destination app.
Microsoft changes Snipping Tool features and labels through Windows updates, so your menu may use slightly different wording. If Text Actions is missing, install pending Windows updates and check the Snipping Tool version. For a screenshot already saved elsewhere, opening it in Snipping Tool or taking a fresh snip are both practical ways to put the image into the OCR workflow.
PowerToys as an alternative capture route
PowerToys Text Extractor can extract text from other application or media content. Microsoft’s current guidance distinguishes it from Snipping Tool: use Snipping Tool for capturing screenshots, and keep PowerToys for cases where its cross-application capture is more convenient.
PDFs and repeated document work
If the screenshot is embedded in a PDF, or you have many document images, a document OCR workflow is more appropriate than copying one selection at a time. Adobe’s Scan & OCR process recognizes text so a PDF becomes searchable and editable. Adobe also identifies Adobe Scan as a free mobile app for creating scans.
When Acrobat is worth using
- You need a searchable PDF rather than a one-time clipboard copy.
- You need to edit recognized text in a document-like file.
- You have many pages or images and want a repeatable workflow.
Adobe says batch OCR is available through Action Wizard with certain desktop plans. Check your Acrobat edition before planning a batch job; ordinary single-image copying does not require this document workflow.

Improve the image before you run OCR
OCR can only interpret the pixels it receives. Before selecting text, make the relevant words as clear and isolated as possible:
- Crop tightly: remove browser chrome, icons, and unrelated columns.
- Use the original screenshot: avoid a second screenshot of a compressed preview or a messenger thumbnail.
- Increase the viewing size: zooming or using a larger crop can make small characters distinguishable.
- Straighten the image: rotate tilted text before recognition.
- Check contrast: light gray text, glare, gradients, and patterned backgrounds are common sources of substitutions.
- Process columns separately: selecting one region at a time helps prevent lines from being read in the wrong order.
Google specifically recommends a smaller selection for more specific Lens results. Regardless of platform, proofread the output against the screenshot, with special attention to one-character differences in account numbers, prices, dates, code, URLs, and names.
What accuracy should you expect?
Apple, Google, and Microsoft document how to invoke OCR, but the cited official material does not establish a current accuracy ranking between their tools. Recognition depends on image quality, typeface, language support, layout, and the device or software version.
A 2018 paper titled Text Extraction and Retrieval from Smartphone Screenshots: Building a Repository for Life in Media reported 74% character-level accuracy for one workflow that combined OpenCV preprocessing with an LSTM-based Tesseract OCR release. That figure belongs to the paper’s dataset and pipeline; it is not a score for today’s iPhone, Android, or Windows OCR and should not be used as a product comparison.

Troubleshooting common OCR problems

Frequently Asked Questions
Does OCR preserve the screenshot’s exact formatting?
Usually no. OCR is primarily a text-recognition step; columns, spacing, fonts, and line breaks may need manual cleanup. If the goal is a searchable or editable document, use a PDF OCR workflow and inspect the layout afterward.
Can I use Live Text on a video frame?
Apple documents Live Text recognition in video from iOS 16 or later. Pause on the frame, then use the text-detection controls when the language and region are supported.
Is the 74% figure a reliable score for my phone?
No. It was reported in a 2018 paper for one OpenCV-plus-LSTM/Tesseract pipeline and dataset, not for current consumer OCR tools.
