The quickest Windows 11 screenshot shortcut is Windows + Shift + S. It opens Snipping Tool’s overlay, where you can select a rectangle, freeform shape, window or the full screen. The capture is copied to the clipboard; select the notification to edit and save it. For an image file saved immediately, press Windows + PrtScn; Microsoft documents PicturesScreenshots as the destination.
Windows 11 has separate built-in routes for selected areas, active windows, full-screen files, games and video. The right choice depends on whether you need a clipboard image, a saved file, a recording, or editing tools.
Choose the right built-in capture method

These routes are not interchangeable: some save a file, some only copy to the clipboard, and Game Bar is intended for an app or game after it has been enabled.
Take a screenshot of part of the screen
Use Windows + Shift + S
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose a mode in the Snipping Tool overlay: rectangular, freeform, window or full screen.
- Drag over the area, select the window, or let the full-screen mode capture everything.
- Use the notification that appears to open the image in Snipping Tool.
- Annotate, crop, copy or save the result from the editor.
This is the best default for a single region because you do not need to open a separate application first. Remember that the initial result is a clipboard capture; save it from Snipping Tool if you need a permanent file.

Capture a window or an irregular shape
Open the Snipping Tool overlay with the same shortcut and select Window to capture one window, or Freeform to trace an irregular outline. Rectangle and full-screen modes remain available in the same overlay. Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to copy words or images from all or part of a PC screen.
Save a full-screen screenshot straight to a file
Windows + PrtScn
Press Windows + PrtScn to capture every visible display and save the image without a paste step. Open File Explorer and go to PicturesScreenshots. If OneDrive is redirecting your Pictures folder, the equivalent Screenshots folder may appear inside that redirected location; use the folder shown under your Windows Pictures location.
PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn
A bare PrtScn key can behave differently depending on the Windows setting. Current Windows 11 guidance says it may open screen snipping by default rather than placing a full-screen bitmap directly on the clipboard. Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping when the key does not behave as expected.
Alt + PrtScn copies only the active window. It does not create a file by itself: switch to Paint, Snipping Tool, an email or another image-capable application and paste the clipboard contents, then save.

Edit, extract text and share in Snipping Tool
After an image capture, Snipping Tool provides pen, highlighter, shapes, eraser, crop and undo/redo controls. Its Text actions can recognize text in the image and offer quick redaction for detected email addresses or phone numbers. Microsoft states that this text recognition is performed locally on the device.

A video snip can be handed to Clipchamp for additional editing, including captions or audio. Two newer actions have a device restriction: Perfect Screenshot and Color picker are limited to Copilot+ PCs in Microsoft’s current support documentation, so do not expect those controls on every Windows 11 computer.
Record a screen clip in Windows 11
Snipping Tool video snip
- Press Windows + Shift + R.
- Drag to select the rectangular area to record.
- Start the recording, perform the action you need, then stop it from the recording toolbar.
- Save the resulting clip from Snipping Tool. Microsoft lists MP4 as the default format and
VideosScreen Recordingsas the default folder.
This route is suited to a short demonstration of a selected part of the desktop. It is separate from the still-image shortcut, so pressing Windows + Shift + S will not start a video.
Xbox Game Bar for an app or game
- Enable Xbox Game Bar in Windows Settings before attempting to record.
- Focus the game or app you want to capture.
- Press Windows + Alt + R to start recording, and press it again to stop.
- Find the MP4 in
VideosCaptures.
For a still image of the focused game or app, press Windows + Alt + PrtScn; Microsoft documents a PNG in the same Captures folder. Game Bar is an app/game capture route, not a universal replacement for Snipping Tool’s desktop-region recording.

Some menus close as soon as focus changes. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions provide a reliable sequence: open Snipping Tool first, open the menu you need, then press Ctrl + PrtScn to bring up capture mode while the menu remains visible. Select the menu area and continue in the editor.
Troubleshoot common Windows 11 screenshot problems
Nothing appears after Windows + Shift + S
- Look for the notification and open it; the first capture is normally held in the clipboard rather than silently written to a folder.
- If notifications are disabled, open Snipping Tool from Start and paste the clipboard image into it or another image app.
- For a file created without the clipboard step, use Windows + PrtScn instead.
PrtScn opens a selection overlay
That behavior is controlled by Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. Review the switch before troubleshooting the keyboard itself.

The expected file is not in the folder
Distinguish clipboard captures from file captures. Windows + Shift + S and Alt + PrtScn require a paste or an explicit save. Windows + PrtScn uses PicturesScreenshots; Game Bar uses VideosCaptures; Snipping Tool video uses VideosScreen Recordings according to Microsoft’s documented defaults. If your account redirects Pictures or Videos, start from those libraries in File Explorer and follow the current folder location.
Game Bar recording will not start
Confirm that Xbox Game Bar is enabled and that an app or game is focused. Its shortcut is documented for that capture context; use Snipping Tool for a general desktop rectangle.
