NASA’s Expedition 74 crew followed the March 18, 2026 spacewalk with a planned light-duty day on March 19. Jessica Meir and Chris Williams had completed the primary objectives of U.S. EVA 94, including preparation of the International Space Station’s 2A power channel for future roll-out solar arrays. The next day involved rest, debriefing and lower-intensity station work—not an emergency response.
What happened on the spacewalk?
Meir and Williams worked outside the ISS on March 18 to install a solar-array modification kit and prepare the station’s 2A power channel. They also installed a 2A power-system jumper cable. NASA reported that the spacewalk ended at 3:54 p.m. EDT after approximately seven hours and two minutes. NASA’s mission update says the primary objectives were completed.
The work prepares the station for later installation of roll-out solar arrays. The arrays were not installed during this EVA, and NASA’s update does not say that the station’s total electrical output increased immediately.
Who conducted the EVA?
- Jessica Meir: completed her fourth spacewalk.
- Chris Williams: completed his first spacewalk.
- Jack Hathaway and Sophie Adenot: remained inside the station and supported the operation as members of the Expedition 74 crew.
What does “light-duty day” mean on the ISS?
NASA used “light-duty day” to describe the crew’s March 19 schedule. It did not mean that every astronaut stopped working, nor does the cited reporting identify an injury, illness or medical restriction. The crew had time off after the physically demanding EVA while also handling the normal work needed to close out a spacewalk.

According to NASA’s March 19 station update, activities included:
- Debriefing the spacewalk and reviewing its results.
- Completing post-EVA closeout procedures.
- Inspecting station modules and equipment.
- Cleaning work areas.
- Stowing cargo and tools.
These tasks help the crew and ground controllers document what happened, return equipment to its proper configuration and identify work that must be carried forward.

Which tasks were completed, and which remain?

NASA did not characterize the deferred camera and microbial-sampling tasks as a failed EVA. Spacewalks are planned around priorities, time, consumables and crew safety; the agency’s account specifically states that the primary objectives were completed. The cited update does not explain why each remaining task was deferred.
Why the 2A power channel matters
The 2A channel is part of the ISS electrical-power system. Preparing it and installing the jumper cable creates the hardware path needed for future roll-out solar arrays. NASA says those arrays are intended to provide additional power for critical station systems and support the station’s safe, controlled deorbit.

The March 18 EVA therefore made the station ready for a later power-system step; it was not itself the installation of the new arrays. NASA has not provided, in the cited update, a date for that installation or a precise figure for the additional power it will deliver.
What happened the following day?
On March 19, the four Expedition 74 residents shifted from the high-intensity external operation to the light-duty schedule. Meir and Williams could recover from the EVA while the crew and mission controllers reviewed the work and completed housekeeping and closeout activities. The day was the immediate operational follow-up to the completed spacewalk, not a separate mission and not evidence of trouble aboard the station.

What happens next?
The Canadarm2 camera-lens-cover installation and Quest-airlock microbial swabbing will require a later spacewalk. The prepared 2A channel is likewise intended to support a future roll-out-solar-array installation. The NASA update cited here does not establish dates for either activity, so no specific schedule can be stated from this report.
The bottom line
The March 19 light-duty day was a normal, planned transition after a seven-hour-two-minute EVA. Meir and Williams completed the main 2A power-channel preparation for a future solar-array upgrade, while two lower-priority tasks were deferred. The crew then combined recovery time with debriefing, inspections, cleaning, cargo stowage and other closeout work.
