NASA postponed U.S. Spacewalk 90 at the International Space Station on June 13, 2024, after astronauts Tracy C. Dyson and Matthew “Matt” Dominick began removing their spacesuits before leaving the Quest airlock. NASA called the reason a “spacesuit discomfort issue,” said the crew was healthy, and did not identify the astronaut involved or provide a more specific diagnosis.
What happened on June 13?
Spacewalk 90 was scheduled to begin outside the International Space Station on June 13, 2024. Dyson and Dominick started removing their suits at about 6:25 a.m. CDT, roughly an hour before the planned airlock egress. NASA then stopped the activity and postponed the spacewalk.
NASA’s initial announcement described the reason only as a “spacesuit discomfort issue.” The agency’s subsequent update said the astronauts were healthy and that the spacesuits were functioning as expected. The decision was therefore a postponement during final preparations, not a permanent cancellation.
What NASA did—and did not—disclose
The public NASA notices do not say whether Dyson or Dominick experienced the discomfort. They also do not identify a faulty component or a medical condition. The available record does not establish a leak, cooling failure, pressure problem, poor fit, or biomedical emergency as the cause of the June 13 delay.

A later government report likewise describes the event as a postponement caused by crewmember suit discomfort without adding a public technical diagnosis: NASA’s FY 2024 Aeronautics and Space Report.
Who were the astronauts?
- Tracy C. Dyson: A NASA astronaut and Expedition 71 flight engineer. The planned EVA would have been her fourth ISS spacewalk.
- Matthew “Matt” Dominick: An Expedition 71 flight engineer scheduled for his first ISS spacewalk.
NASA later assigned Dyson to the rescheduled attempt with astronaut Mike Barratt rather than Dominick. The original crew and mission details appear in NASA’s Spacewalk 90 coverage plan.

What Spacewalk 90 was supposed to accomplish
The approximately six-and-a-half-hour EVA had two principal objectives:
- Remove a faulty radio-frequency-group electronics box associated with an external station communications antenna.
- Collect samples from station surfaces to study whether microorganisms can survive and reproduce outside the orbiting laboratory.
These objectives, along with the expected duration, were outlined by NASA before the original attempt.

Why discomfort can stop an EVA
An extravehicular mobility unit is a pressurized life-support and mobility system, not ordinary clothing. Even discomfort that is not a hardware failure can affect an astronaut’s ability to work safely. It may interfere with:
- Hand, arm, or shoulder movement while operating tools;
- Head movement and visibility;
- Use of restraints and work surfaces;
- Fatigue, concentration, and communications; or
- The ability to respond quickly to an emergency.
Those are general operational reasons for treating a suit concern seriously. They are not a diagnosis of what happened on June 13. NASA specifically said the suits were functioning as expected in its scheduling update.

Was anyone in danger?
NASA said the crew was healthy. The decision was made while the astronauts were still in the preparation phase, before they exited the Quest airlock. The official account supports a precautionary safety stop, not a reported near-disaster.

| Date | Status or plan | Crew and purpose |
|---|---|---|
| June 13, 2024 | Postponed during suit-removal preparations | Dyson and Dominick; Spacewalk 90 objectives |
| June 24, 2024 | Rescheduled attempt | Dyson and Mike Barratt |
| July 2, 2024 | Second EVA planned | Part of the revised Spacewalks 90 and 91 schedule |
NASA announced the revised dates in its updated spacewalk schedule and later confirmed the Dyson–Barratt pairing in its coverage update.
What happened during the June 24 attempt?
The June 24 event was a separate spacesuit-related incident, not a newly revealed explanation for the June 13 postponement. Dyson and Barratt entered the Quest airlock and switched their suits to battery power. NASA then reported a water leak in the service-and-cooling umbilical unit on Dyson’s suit and canceled the spacewalk. NASA said the crew was not in danger from that leak.
NASA’s later EVA significant-incidents report records water and ice on the extravehicular mobility unit and snow in the airlock after the umbilical leaked. That documented hardware problem occurred on June 24; it should not be used to fill in the undisclosed cause of the June 13 discomfort issue.
What is known about the mission’s eventual completion?
The cited NASA announcements establish the June 13 postponement, the June 24 cancellation, and the planned July 2 follow-on EVA. They do not establish a later completion date for the postponed work. A definitive claim that Spacewalk 90 was eventually completed would require a later verified NASA record.

The key distinction
| Event | NASA’s stated reason | What the record says about crew safety |
|---|---|---|
| June 13 postponement | Spacesuit discomfort issue; no specific diagnosis disclosed | Crew healthy; suits reported to be functioning as expected |
| June 24 cancellation | Water leak in Dyson’s service-and-cooling umbilical unit | NASA said the crew was not in danger from the leak |
The Bottom Line
NASA stopped Spacewalk 90 on June 13, 2024, because of an unspecified spacesuit discomfort issue detected before egress. The astronauts were healthy, and NASA did not publicly identify the affected astronaut or a technical fault. The June 24 cancellation resulted from a separate, documented water leak in a suit service-and-cooling umbilical.
