Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use an SVG <foreignObject> bridge. Clone the div, place its XHTML markup inside an SVG, load that SVG into an Image, and draw the decoded image onto a canvas. This uses browser APIs only; it does not make the DOM itself a canvas object. For fixed designs, redraw the card with the Canvas 2D API instead. The newer HTML-in-Canvas proposal is experimental, so feature-detect it and keep a fallback.
The practical browser-only method
Canvas 2D accepts pixels, paths, text, and image sources—not a live DOM element. That is why there is no ctx.drawElement(div) in the standard API. The closest general-purpose bridge is to serialize the element as XHTML inside an SVG foreignObject, decode the SVG as an image, and then call drawImage.
The bridge preserves considerably more ordinary HTML/CSS layout than manually calculating every line and box, but it is still a rendering pipeline with constraints. External images may not load in the SVG image, computed styles are not automatically copied into a detached clone, and fonts or form controls can differ between browsers. Treat the result as an export, not a live link between the DOM and canvas.
Complete JavaScript function
async function divToCanvasForeignObject(element) {
if (!(element instanceof Element)) {
throw new TypeError("element must be a DOM Element");
}
const rect = element.getBoundingClientRect();
const width = Math.ceil(rect.width);
const height = Math.ceil(rect.height);
if (!width || !height) {
throw new Error("The element must have a non-zero rendered size");
}
const clone = element.cloneNode(true);
clone.setAttribute("xmlns", "http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml");
// If the clone depends on styles outside the subtree, copy the
// required computed styles or include equivalent CSS in the SVG.
// Sanitize all user-controlled markup and attributes before serialization.
const markup = new XMLSerializer().serializeToString(clone);
const svg = `<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="${width}" height="${height}">
<foreignObject x="0" y="0" width="100%" height="100%">
${markup}
</foreignObject>
</svg>`;
const blob = new Blob([svg], { type: "image/svg+xml;charset=utf-8" });
const objectUrl = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
try {
const image = new Image();
image.src = objectUrl;
await image.decode();
const scale = window.devicePixelRatio || 1;
const canvas = document.createElement("canvas");
canvas.width = Math.ceil(width * scale);
canvas.height = Math.ceil(height * scale);
canvas.style.width = `${width}px`;
canvas.style.height = `${height}px`;
const context = canvas.getContext("2d");
if (!context) throw new Error("Canvas 2D is unavailable");
context.setTransform(scale, 0, 0, scale, 0, 0);
context.drawImage(image, 0, 0, width, height);
return canvas;
} finally {
URL.revokeObjectURL(objectUrl);
}
}
async function saveDivAsPng() {
const canvas = await divToCanvasForeignObject(document.querySelector("#invoice"));
const blob = await new Promise(resolve => canvas.toBlob(resolve, "image/png"));
if (!blob) throw new Error("PNG encoding failed");
const link = document.createElement("a");
link.href = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
link.download = "invoice.png";
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(link.href);
}
The function measures the rendered box, creates a high-density backing bitmap using devicePixelRatio, waits for image decoding, and releases the temporary object URL. toBlob() is preferable for a file; use toDataURL() when you specifically need a small inline data URL.

Make the serialized subtree render correctly
- Choose dimensions deliberately.
getBoundingClientRect()gives the visible border box. For a full document section, temporarily set a known width, expand collapsed content, or measure a dedicated export wrapper. - Provide CSS. A cloned node does not automatically carry every stylesheet rule that affected the original. Inline critical styles, copy the required computed properties, or embed a stylesheet inside the SVG markup.
- Inline assets. Convert required raster images to data URIs and ensure fonts are available before capture. Do not assume an external URL will load when the SVG is decoded as an image.
- Escape and sanitize. XML serialization must not be assembled from untrusted strings. Sanitize user HTML and attributes, reject unsafe URL schemes, and avoid injecting untrusted content into the SVG wrapper.
- Wait for readiness. Await
document.fonts.ready, image completion, and any application data fetches before calling the function. Otherwise the canvas can contain fallback fonts or blank image boxes.
When manual Canvas 2D drawing is the better answer
For a fixed badge, chart, thumbnail, or game sprite, drawing the design directly is often more predictable than serializing HTML. You control every pixel and avoid SVG foreign-object support differences, but you must implement layout yourself.
function drawCard(data, scale = window.devicePixelRatio || 1) {
const width = 640;
const height = 360;
const canvas = document.createElement("canvas");
canvas.width = width * scale;
canvas.height = height * scale;
canvas.style.width = `${width}px`;
canvas.style.height = `${height}px`;
const ctx = canvas.getContext("2d");
ctx.scale(scale, scale);
ctx.fillStyle = "#101827";
ctx.fillRect(0, 0, width, height);
ctx.fillStyle = "#ffffff";
ctx.font = "700 32px system-ui, sans-serif";
ctx.fillText(data.title, 32, 64);
ctx.font = "18px system-ui, sans-serif";
ctx.fillStyle = "#b8c4d6";
ctx.fillText(data.subtitle, 32, 100);
return canvas;
}
Canvas does not provide HTML layout. Your code must handle line wrapping, font loading, clipping, shadows, transforms, responsive breakpoints, image sizing, and right-to-left text where needed. Keep the logical dimensions in the canvas attributes or JavaScript; changing only CSS display dimensions stretches the bitmap. Also check browser maximum canvas dimensions and available device memory before creating very large exports.
What about the HTML-in-Canvas proposal?
A proposed API aims to let a canvas paint a DOM subtree with methods such as drawElementImage, a paint event, and the layoutsubtree canvas attribute. A minimal experiment looks like this:

This is a proposed WICG API, documented for an experimental Chrome Canary trial behind chrome://flags/#canvas-draw-element; related flag descriptions have also appeared in recent Brave Stable builds. Names, behavior, and availability can change. Never make it the only production path: detect the capability and retain the SVG or manual renderer.
Choosing an approach
| Approach | Layout fidelity | Availability | Main costs and risks | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
SVG foreignObject |
Often close to browser HTML/CSS | Existing browser technique, with browser-specific edge cases | Asset inlining, XML escaping, security restrictions, CSS and form-control differences | Exporting a styled subtree or one-off image |
| Manual Canvas 2D | Only as faithful as your drawing code | Widely available | Highest engineering effort for layout and typography | Fixed templates, charts, cards, and games |
| HTML-in-Canvas proposal | Intended to use the browser renderer | Experimental and flag-gated in documented implementations | Changing API and support; fallback required | Controlled prototypes |
Or skip the browser setup
If your real goal is a rendered page or a single element from a public URL—not a canvas object you must manipulate in the current tab—ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture one element by CSS selector, full pages with lazy images loaded, custom viewports and device presets, retina output, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, and PDF output. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
One request is enough (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, with every feature on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.

Export, security, and accessibility checks
Keep the canvas origin-clean
If a cross-origin image is drawn without an appropriate CORS response, reading pixels or exporting can fail with a security exception. Prefer same-origin assets, data URIs, or correctly configured CORS. Test toBlob() in the same browser matrix you support.
Preserve accessible content
A canvas is a bitmap; drawn text and controls are not exposed as semantic HTML to accessibility tools. Keep the original DOM available, provide an equivalent text alternative, or expose the export as a supplementary image with meaningful alternative text.
Control memory and output quality
A backing store of width × height × scale² can consume substantial memory. Cap user-selected dimensions, lower the scale for huge exports, and handle a null result from getContext() or toBlob(). Compare output dimensions with the maximum canvas size of each target browser.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blank canvas | The SVG image was drawn before decoding, or the element measured at zero size | Await image.decode(), verify width and height, and capture after the element is visible. |
| Styles disappeared | The clone no longer matches stylesheet or inherited rules | Inline critical computed styles or embed the needed CSS in the serialized SVG. |
| Images are missing | External resources were not available to the SVG image | Inline images as data URIs, wait for loading, and verify CORS. |
| Text uses the wrong font | The webfont had not loaded or is unavailable in the SVG context | Await document.fonts.ready, ensure the font is permitted, and provide a fallback. |
SecurityError on export |
The canvas is tainted by a cross-origin resource | Use same-origin/data-URI assets or configure the resource’s CORS headers before drawing. |
| Blurry result | CSS size was changed without increasing the backing bitmap | Multiply canvas attributes by devicePixelRatio and scale the context, as in the function above. |
| Huge export crashes or fails | Canvas or device-memory limits | Reduce dimensions or scale, split the export, and enforce a safe maximum. |
| Form controls or pseudo-elements differ | SVG foreign-object rendering is not identical to the live document | Test target browsers; replace fragile controls with export-specific markup or draw them manually. |
A reliable production workflow
- Create an export-only wrapper with explicit dimensions and background.
- Freeze dynamic state: wait for data, fonts, images, animations, and lazy content; disable transitions during capture.
- Choose
foreignObjectfor complex but bounded HTML, or Canvas 2D for a small fixed design. - Sanitize all serialized content and inline assets required by the SVG path.
- Render at a controlled scale, export with
toBlob(), and revoke temporary URLs. - Run visual tests in every supported browser with long text, missing images, RTL text, high-DPI displays, and the largest allowed dimensions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep the result synchronized with the div?
No. The exported canvas is a snapshot. Re-run the conversion after DOM changes, or use a manual renderer that redraws whenever application state changes.
Does this method support every CSS property?
No. Support depends on the browser’s SVG and foreign-object implementation, the property, fonts, controls, filters, transforms, and assets involved. Validate the exact content you ship.
Which output format should I choose?
Use PNG for lossless text and transparency, JPEG for photographic content without transparency, and WebP when your consumers support it and a smaller file is useful.
