Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The right website availability monitor depends on what “working” means for your site. A basic check can tell you whether an endpoint responds; it cannot prove that a customer can log in, complete checkout, or use a page successfully. For endpoint and protocol coverage, compare UptimeRobot; for synthetic uptime, transactions, page speed, and real-user monitoring, evaluate Pingdom; for synthetic checks that include Core Web Vitals and broken links, consider New Relic. These are vendor-documented options, not independently tested rankings. If you need clean screenshots for diagnosing a page rather than continuous uptime monitoring, ScreenshotNeo is a separate tool to try first.
What website availability monitoring can—and cannot—tell you
An availability monitor periodically checks a site, service, or endpoint and alerts you when it appears unavailable or otherwise fails a defined test. The simplest check asks whether a URL responds. That is useful, but it does not establish that the page rendered correctly or that a user journey worked.
A homepage may return a successful response while a checkout button is broken, a login flow is stuck, or important content is missing. Choose checks that match the risk you care about:
- Endpoint reachability: Is a website, server, or API responding?
- Content or protocol checks: Is expected text present, a port reachable, a DNS record changed, or an SSL certificate valid?
- Browser transactions: Can a scripted user complete a sequence such as logging in or submitting an order?
- Performance: Does a page load within an acceptable time, and are relevant web performance signals healthy?
- Communication: Can visitors see a public incident status page? This informs users; it does not detect the outage for your team.
Use a basic check for simple services, then add transaction or page-performance monitoring for workflows where a response code alone is not enough.

How to compare availability monitoring services
Check type and interval
Confirm that a service supports the precise kind of check you need: HTTP/HTTPS, keywords, ping, ports, DNS, SSL, API, browser transaction, or page speed. Check interval affects detection timing: a service checking less often may take longer to notice an incident. Compare the interval and the plan’s monitor or check allowance together, since vendors use different pricing units.
Location and failure verification
Check where probes run and whether those locations reflect your audience or infrastructure. A failure seen from one network may not be a global outage. Also ask how the provider validates an apparent failure before sending an alert; confirmation can reduce false alarms, but the vendor’s description is not an independently measured guarantee.
Alerts, reports, and status pages
Match alert channels and integrations to the people who must respond. Review reporting retention if you need to examine trends or recurring incidents. A public status page is useful for communicating known problems, but it is distinct from monitoring: the monitor detects and alerts, while the status page publishes information for customers.
Pricing model and limits
One vendor may charge by monitor, another by synthetic check volume, and another may expose different intervals or capabilities by plan. Check current plan limits, overages, retention, and paid add-ons directly before committing. “Free” does not mean the same capacity or feature set across services.

Availability monitoring tools to evaluate
| Service | Documented fit | Plan or scale details on vendor pages | Best reason to evaluate |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Website screenshots and PDFs through an API or MCP server; not a continuous uptime monitor | Free: 1,000 shots/month; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots | Use it for clean visual captures when diagnosing pages; cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed. |
| Pingdom | Synthetic uptime, page speed, business transactions, plus separate real-user monitoring | Configurable pricing; vendor page describes 13-month data retention for its RUM offering | Evaluate when you want availability, transaction, speed, and user-perspective performance functions together. |
| UptimeRobot | HTTP/HTTPS, keyword, ping, port, heartbeat, DNS, SSL, domain-expiry, and response-time checks | Pricing page displays interval tiers of 5 minutes, 60 seconds, 30 seconds, and 15 seconds; features vary by plan | Evaluate when you need multiple endpoint and protocol check types and status-page options. |
| New Relic | Synthetic website performance checks for availability, Core Web Vitals, load, broken links, and SSL | Vendor page lists 500 monthly checks in Free, 10,000 in Standard, and a half-cent per additional check for Standard and Pro | Evaluate when synthetic availability checks should sit alongside broader web-performance measurements. |
Figures and feature descriptions above are vendor-published and can change; they are not a common benchmark. New Relic also says that supplying a credit card unlocks 10,000 free checks each month; distinguish that offer from the 500 monthly checks listed for its Free tier. Pingdom’s pricing page describes an enterprise tier for high page-view volumes. Confirm current terms and fit on the linked vendor pages.
Which service fits your monitoring need?
Choose Pingdom for a combined synthetic and real-user view
Pingdom describes synthetic monitoring for application availability, performance, and business transactions, with uptime, page-speed, and transaction monitoring, email and SMS alerts, maintenance windows, public status pages, and reports. Its separate real-user monitoring (RUM) offering is intended to show performance from users’ perspective and includes shareable reports; the pricing page describes 13 months of RUM data retention. These are the vendor’s stated capabilities, not a claim that one product configuration includes every function at every price.
Pingdom says its uptime checks cover websites, applications, and servers; alerts can use SMS, email, or webhook. Its product page describes monitoring from regions including North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, root-cause details such as traceroute, server output, and response codes, and a second check on incidents before alerting to filter false positives. It also describes public status pages and a 30-day trial. Verify the current trial and plan details before signing up.
Choose UptimeRobot for varied checks across endpoints and protocols
UptimeRobot’s materials list HTTP/HTTPS website checks, keyword checks on page responses, ping, ports, cron-job or heartbeat checks, DNS changes, SSL certificates, domain expiry, and response time. The vendor says it monitors websites, APIs, and endpoints and supports real-time status pages.

Its pricing page displays monitoring interval tiers of 5 minutes, 60 seconds, 30 seconds, and 15 seconds. Monitor types, regional monitoring, alerting, status-page capacity, and data retention vary by plan; listed plan features include API, UDP, DNS, SSL, and heartbeat monitoring. Check the live plan matrix for the capability and interval you actually need.
Choose New Relic for synthetic checks tied to web performance
New Relic describes synthetic checks for page availability, Core Web Vitals, page and content load, broken links, and SSL validity. Its product page lists 500 monthly checks for Free and 10,000 checks for Standard, with a half-cent charge per additional check for Standard and Pro. It also states that adding a credit card unlocks 10,000 free checks each month. Confirm which allowance applies to your account and how usage is counted before designing a monitoring schedule.
Where Better Stack fits
Better Stack is another service in this category, but the vendor information available here is not enough to make a feature-level recommendation. Check its current official feature and plan information against the criteria above rather than assuming a particular check type or limit.
Build a monitoring plan that catches the failures users notice
- List the critical services. Include the public site, APIs, and external dependencies whose failure affects customers.
- Pair a simple check with a meaningful test. Monitor endpoint availability, then add a keyword, performance, SSL, or browser transaction check where it addresses a real failure mode.
- Set a useful interval and locations. Balance detection speed against included checks or monitors, and select probe regions relevant to your users.
- Configure verification and escalation. Understand how failed checks are confirmed, then route alerts to an accountable person or on-call system.
- Publish incident information separately. Use a status page to communicate incidents and updates; do not treat it as a substitute for detection.
- Review plan limits and usage. Check intervals, check or monitor allowances, overages, data retention, regional options, and alert channels on the current plan page.
Do not equate a vendor’s stated second-check policy or worldwide coverage with a measured guarantee of alert accuracy or speed. No comparative testing of these products is established here.

When screenshots help—and when they do not
A screenshot can help an engineer inspect a rendering problem, capture a visual record, or give an AI agent a page image to analyze. It is not a substitute for scheduled monitoring: one successful capture does not establish ongoing availability, validate a transaction, or provide incident alerting. Use an uptime monitor for detection and a screenshot workflow when a visual artifact helps explain what the page looked like.
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, rather than an uptime-monitoring service. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. It bills only clean shots: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing state. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free without a card, then Starter at $5 for 3,000, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000, and Business at $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is available on every plan. These are ScreenshotNeo’s stated prices and allowances; check its site for current terms.

The monitor says the site is down, but it loads for you
Check whether the alert came from one region, whether the monitor validates incidents with another check, and whether access controls, network routes, or DNS differ for the probe location. Compare the monitor’s response code or diagnostic output with the origin logs before dismissing the event.

The endpoint is green, but users cannot complete a task
A simple reachability check may pass while page content or browser behavior is broken. Add an expected-keyword check where content is the concern, or a browser transaction check for a workflow such as login or checkout. Confirm that the test follows the same relevant steps a user does.

Alerts arrive too late
Review the configured check interval and plan limits. A longer interval can leave more time between checks; moving to a faster tier may affect cost or usage. Also inspect incident confirmation settings and alert routing, since detection and delivery are separate stages.
Checks consume more than expected
Reconcile the schedule and number of monitors or checks with the plan’s allowance and overage rules. New Relic’s product page, for example, lists a half-cent per-check overage for Standard and Pro; verify the current usage policy and account-specific allowance before scaling checks.
A screenshot is blank or includes consent UI
That points to a screenshot-capture issue, not an uptime monitor’s verdict. For ScreenshotNeo, check the response’s X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers to see how the capture was classified and billed. Cleanup steps can be turned off if a consent or popup removal step interferes with the page you need to inspect.
