The quickest way to see an old version of a website is the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. Open web.archive.org, enter the exact page URL, choose Search archived websites, select a year, then a highlighted capture date and time. The result is a time-stamped reconstruction of that URL—not necessarily a pixel-perfect screenshot—so verify that the text, images, CSS and important links actually load before treating it as evidence.
What a “screenshot time machine” actually is
“Screenshot time machine” is a useful description for looking at an older web page, but the Wayback Machine normally replays an archived capture. It may reconstruct HTML together with captured images, stylesheets and scripts. The appearance can differ from the live page when JavaScript, forms, login areas or supporting files were not archived.
A capture is tied to a URL and timestamp. A site homepage and an article, product page or pricing page can have completely different capture histories. If you need a defensible record, save the archived URL, the displayed capture timestamp and a local copy according to your organisation’s policy. This guide does not establish legal admissibility.
View an older version of a website
- Open web.archive.org (or reach the Wayback Machine through Internet Archive web search).
- Paste the specific URL, including its path. For example, use the article URL rather than only the site’s home page.
- Choose Search archived websites from the search control.
- Select a year in the timeline.
- Choose a highlighted date and time. Each point represents an available capture.
- Read the replayed page. Use the Wayback navigation bar to move to earlier or later captures.
If the page is incomplete, try a nearby capture. A different date may contain the missing image, stylesheet or script. You can also search for the missing asset’s original URL separately.

Choose the right URL
- Exact path: include folders, file names, query strings when they identify a distinct page, and the correct HTTP or HTTPS form.
- Canonical variations: check both a www and non-www address if the site used both.
- Redirects: note whether the archive follows a redirect to another URL; the destination may have its own capture history.
- Dynamic pages: a URL that builds content after loading may replay without the data that appeared in a browser at the time.
Find a screenshot from a specific date
After entering the URL, use the timeline to narrow the year and then select a highlighted capture on the calendar. Open the available time closest to the date you need, and record the full timestamp shown in the Wayback interface. If no point exists for that date, that means there is no usable archived copy for that URL and time; it does not prove the page never existed.
For pages that changed frequently, compare more than one capture around the target date. A single capture can fall between a redesign, a campaign update or a content publication. Preserve the archived URL for every version you rely on.
Save a page now for future reference
Internet Archive’s Save Page Now workflow is designed for one page at a time: put a URL into the form, submit it, and open the returned archived URL. The service captures the entered page, including images and CSS when available. It does not save outlinks or start a whole-site crawl.
- Open the Save Page Now form from the Wayback Machine.
- Enter the exact page URL.
- Submit the form and wait for the result URL.
- Open that archived URL in a new tab.
- Check the main text, images, styles and important links before sharing it.
- Store the archived URL and capture timestamp with your project records.
Some sites prohibit crawling, and SSL settings can break a capture. A submission that returns quickly is not proof that every resource was saved, so always inspect the replay.

Use the browser extension for one-click checks
The official Wayback Machine browser extension can save the page currently open, show oldest, newest and overview views, display how many snapshots are stored, check for archived copies when a page returns a 4xx or 5xx error, and list URLs captured under the current site. Its README provides installation choices for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Browser-store permissions and listing details can change, so review the current listing before installing.
The extension is convenient for ad-hoc research; it does not turn a single-page save into scheduled monitoring or a whole-site crawl.
What the archive can—and cannot—reproduce

Make an archived page useful as evidence
Preserve the identity of the capture
- Copy the complete archived URL, including its timestamp segment.
- Record the original URL, the date and time displayed by the archive, and your retrieval date.
- Keep a local export or screenshot where policy permits, but treat the archived URL as the shareable reference.
Verify the visual details
Check the headline, navigation, images, typography, prices or other details that matter to your question. A page can be readable while still missing a hero image, embedded video, tracking-dependent layout or stylesheet. If a detail matters, open the asset’s archived URL or locate another capture.
Use more than one capture when timing matters
Compare captures before and after the event you are investigating. This helps distinguish a short-lived change from a persistent version and exposes pages that were edited between archive visits.

Choose a preservation route

Internet Archive’s 2018 help article enumerated five saving routes—Save Page Now, extensions and add-ons, a Wikipedia bookmarklet, Archive Team and Archive-It. That historical count is not a current count of every available tool.
Troubleshooting missing or broken captures
The timeline has no capture on your date
Try the nearest highlighted date, then check the URL’s spelling, protocol and path. Search the site’s parent path only to discover alternate URLs; do not substitute a homepage capture for the page you need.
The page is blank or partly styled
Reload the archived URL, test a nearby capture and look for missing CSS or script requests. If the page depends on client-side rendering, search for a capture of the underlying content URL or preserve a later complete version.
Images or embedded media are missing
Open the image or media URL separately in the Wayback Machine. Save Page Now includes images and CSS when available, but a failed request, blocked host or uncaptured third-party resource can leave gaps.

A login, paywall or form does not work
Do not enter credentials into an archived replay or expect a private session to be reconstructed. Record the public material that is present and qualify what could not be verified.
The live URL returns an error
Use the Wayback extension’s archived-copy check or paste the URL into the Wayback search directly. A 4xx or 5xx response today can still have historical captures.
Save Page Now fails
Check the URL and retry once. If the site blocks crawling or its SSL configuration prevents capture, use an existing nearby capture, save a different public URL, or ask the site owner for an original export. Do not describe a failed save as proof that the page was absent.

Is a Wayback capture the same as an original screenshot?
No. It is an archived replay of a URL and its captured resources. The visual result can differ when dynamic code or assets are unavailable.
Can I archive an entire website with Save Page Now?
No. That workflow saves the single URL you submit and does not crawl its outlinks.
What should I do when a page is missing?
Check the exact URL, try nearby dates and search important assets separately. Absence of a usable capture is not proof that the page never existed.
Is Archive-It the same service as ordinary Wayback searching?
No. Archive-It is a paid service for organisations that need specified, recurring crawls with technical and web-archivist support.
