To join two website screenshots, first crop the repeated area from the second image, then place both captures in reading order on a canvas. Stack them vertically when the second continues below the first; place them side by side when you are comparing two states. Keep both captures the same width and export PNG when readable interface text matters.
Choose the right way to combine the screenshots
Your best workflow depends on whether you already have image files or still need to capture the live page.
Two saved screenshots
Use an image editor or combiner when the screenshots are already on your computer. This gives you direct control over cropping, overlap, spacing, and privacy. ImageCombiner documents horizontal, vertical, and grid layouts, including spacing and background controls: ImageCombiner documentation.
A live, long webpage
If your goal is an entire page rather than a collage of existing files, a scrolling capture can be easier. Snagit documents vertical and horizontal scrolling capture and editing at TechSmith’s website screenshot guide. Urlbox describes both a scroll-and-stitch mode and a faster native full-page mode; behavior varies by site, so inspect the result: Urlbox screenshot documentation.

Two different states or pages
Use a horizontal layout with a small separator when readers need to compare designs, settings, or before-and-after states. Do not remove meaningful differences as though they were overlap.
Prepare both website screenshots
- Capture at one width. Use the same browser viewport or device width for both images. Different widths create uneven edges and make text alignment difficult.
- Remove browser chrome. Crop tabs, address bars, bookmarks, and operating-system borders unless they are part of what you are documenting.
- Identify the overlap. Find the strip that appears at the bottom of the first capture and again at the top of the second. A basic joiner usually appends pixels; it does not reliably recognize matching content.
- Crop the later image. Remove the repeated strip from the top of the second screenshot. Include repeated fixed headers, toolbars, or other sticky elements when they would otherwise appear twice.
- Check for page changes. Ads, timestamps, carousels, cursor positions, and lazy-loaded images can change between captures. If the overlap is not identical, align the most stable landmarks and avoid claiming the result is a pixel-perfect continuation.
Join the screenshots manually
Vertical continuous page
- Open a new canvas in your editor. Set its width to the common screenshot width and its height to the height of the first image plus the height of the cropped second image.
- Place the first screenshot at the top-left at native size.
- Place the cropped second screenshot directly below it. Use zero gap for a continuous page.
- Inspect the seam at 100% zoom. Text baselines, borders, and image edges should continue naturally.
- Export PNG when interface text must stay sharp. Avoid resizing after placement; native-size placement prevents unnecessary softening.
Horizontal comparison
- Create a canvas whose height is the larger screenshot height and whose width is both widths added together, plus any separator you intentionally want.
- Place the first state on the left and the second on the right, or follow the chronological order that your labels explain.
- Use a narrow, consistent separator rather than an arbitrary gap. A contrasting background can help readers see that these are two discrete states.
- Export PNG for crisp text, or JPEG/WebP only when smaller file size is more important than lossless detail.
When the images overlap imperfectly
Do not stretch one screenshot until it appears to fit. First crop to the same content boundaries, then align stable edges such as a content column or logo. If the page changed between captures, preserve the seam that is least misleading and add a note in the surrounding documentation.
Use a combiner without an image editor
An online combiner can be faster for non-sensitive screenshots. Upload the files, select vertical or horizontal layout, set spacing to zero for a continuous page, and download the result. ImageCombiner’s documentation covers those layout choices and background options. ImagePilot’s guide also describes stitching screenshots online: ImagePilot: Stitch Screenshots Together Online.

Capture a full page instead of joining files
For a page you can still access, recapture it as one full-page image when possible. Scrolling implementations differ: tools may need a wait between scrolls, special handling for fixed or sticky elements, and time to load lazy content. Urlbox documents controls for scrolling, waiting, sticky-element detection, and lazy loading at its screenshot documentation. Check the actual output because dynamic pages and embedded frames can defeat whole-page capture. A Reddit discussion reports a case where a Firefox whole-page method did not work for a scrolling iframe: the discussion on r/software.
Recapture is preferable when the two files contain large, uncertain overlaps or repeated sticky navigation. Manual joining remains preferable when you need to preserve exactly what was captured, compare two states, or keep processing local.
Comparison checklist before you publish
- Both source captures use the same viewport width and browser scale.
- Browser chrome and accidental margins are removed.
- The repeated strip is cropped from the later image.
- Fixed headers, cookie banners, and toolbars are not duplicated.
- The reading order is obvious from placement or labels.
- The seam has been inspected at native size and at the displayed size.
- Text is legible after export; PNG is used when lossless detail matters.
- The final dimensions and file size fit the destination’s limits.
- Sensitive material was not uploaded to an unverified service.
Troubleshooting common joining problems
A repeated band appears at the seam
The overlap was not removed from the second image. Reopen the later capture, crop the duplicated header or content strip, and place it again. Basic joiners generally do not detect matching pixels automatically; ImagePilot discusses this limitation at its stitching guide.
The left and right edges do not line up
The screenshots have different widths, browser zoom, or device-pixel ratios. Recapture at a fixed viewport, or crop both images to the same content width before joining. Do not correct a small mismatch by distorting text.

Small text is blurry
Lossy compression or resizing is usually responsible. Export PNG, place images at native size, and avoid repeated editor exports. StitchPic’s documentation recommends preserving native-size placement for documentation screenshots: StitchPic’s guide.
A sticky element repeats throughout a full-page capture
Use a capture mode that can detect or hide fixed elements, add a wait between scrolls, and test the page again. If the implementation still duplicates navigation, crop or mask the repeated element manually. Full-page behavior varies by site and browser.
Lazy-loaded images are missing
Wait for content to load before each scroll or use a capture tool that explicitly loads lazy images. Verify the lower sections rather than assuming a successful download means every image rendered.

An iframe or embedded application is incomplete
Embedded frames may load on a different schedule or block native whole-page capture. Capture the frame separately and join it with the surrounding page, or use a browser automation workflow that waits for the frame’s selector. The Reddit example above illustrates why a browser’s built-in full-page command is not universal.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo captures a live URL through one request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is useful when you would otherwise capture many scrolling sections and assemble them yourself: full-page capture loads lazy images, and you can wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, hide selectors, click an element, set a viewport or device preset, and choose a retina scale. It also supports custom CSS and JavaScript, cookies and headers, timezone and geolocation, blocking selected requests, caching with a chosen TTL, element-only capture, and PDF page settings.
Its clean-shot controls accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.

See the parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Replace the URL with the page you need.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use vertical or horizontal joining?
Use vertical joining when the second screenshot continues the first page. Use horizontal joining when readers must compare separate states or pages.
What file format keeps website text clearest?
PNG is the safest default because it preserves interface text without lossy compression. Keep the images at native size when possible.
Can a normal joiner remove overlap automatically?
Usually not. Crop repeated content from the second screenshot yourself, then inspect the seam; automatic behavior depends on the specific tool.
