An HTTPS image can appear normally in your browser and still be absent from a Laravel Snappy PDF because the PDF is rendered by a separate wkhtmltopdf process. That process has its own DNS view, network route, certificate store, credentials, user permissions and renderer settings.

There is no single HTTPS switch that fixes every failure. Verify the exact image URL from the renderer’s host and service account, inspect wkhtmltopdf stderr, reproduce the problem with minimal HTML through the exact binary configured in Snappy, and only then change image-loading or local-file settings.

What is actually failing?

Laravel Snappy is a wrapper and service provider; it does not fetch images itself. Your Laravel code starts the separately installed wkhtmltopdf binary, whose path is configured in Snappy. The binary then requests the image while building the PDF.

A browser test from your workstation proves only that your workstation can resolve the host, negotiate TLS, follow redirects and supply any required cookies. It says nothing about a container, server, queue worker or PHP service account running wkhtmltopdf. An issue report involving an external resource and the message Host not found illustrates one possible DNS failure; it is not proof that every missing HTTPS image is a DNS or certificate problem.

1. Confirm the HTML, binary and runtime

Inspect the final image URL

Look at the HTML string or rendered Blade output that Snappy receives, not just the template source. Confirm that the src value is an absolute URL such as https://cdn.example.com/images/logo.png, contains no accidental whitespace, and is not a route that requires a browser session. Log the URL without exposing signed query strings or authorization tokens.

Check the binary Snappy invokes

In the deployment environment, record the path, version, operating system, architecture and installation method:

command -v wkhtmltopdf
wkhtmltopdf --version
ls -l "$(command -v wkhtmltopdf)"

Compare that path with your Snappy configuration. A common Laravel configuration is an environment-controlled binary path:

// config/snappy.php
'pdf' => [
    'enabled' => true,
    'binary' => env('WKHTML_PDF_BINARY', '/usr/local/bin/wkhtmltopdf'),
    'timeout' => false,
    'options' => [],
    'env' => [],
],

After changing configuration, clear Laravel’s cached configuration (php artisan config:clear) or rebuild the deployment so the worker is using the new value. Queue workers may need a restart as well.

Capture the generated document

Use the same view data and save the final HTML to a file. A minimal reproducer makes a network failure distinguishable from malformed markup, CSS, JavaScript or a Laravel data problem.

<!doctype html>
<html>
<body>
  <h1>Image test</h1>
  <img src="https://cdn.example.com/images/test.png" alt="test image">
</body>
</html>

Run that file through the exact configured binary and preserve both output and stderr:

wkhtmltopdf --load-error-handling abort test.html test.pdf 2>render.log
cat render.log

Record the complete error output, operating-system and wkhtmltopdf versions, installation route, and a self-contained HTML/CSS/JavaScript example. Those details are specifically requested in the renderer and wrapper issue-report guidance and are essential when behavior differs between machines.

2. Test the URL from the renderer’s environment

Run checks from the same host or container where wkhtmltopdf runs. Where practical, use the same account as PHP-FPM, the queue worker or the web process (often www-data), because permissions, proxy variables and certificate stores can differ by user.

DNS and connectivity

getent hosts cdn.example.com
curl --fail --location --verbose
  --output /tmp/test-image
  'https://cdn.example.com/images/test.png'
file /tmp/test-image

Successful output should identify the expected image bytes, not an HTML login page or error document. If the host cannot be resolved, fix container DNS, private-zone visibility, split-horizon DNS or the server’s outbound route before changing Snappy options.

TLS, redirects and authentication

The renderer must trust the issuing certificate chain and every hostname in a redirect sequence. Check whether the endpoint redirects to another host, requires an Authorization header, depends on cookies, blocks non-browser user agents, or returns a status other than 2xx. A browser may silently provide all of those requirements.

Do not treat curl -k as a fix. Disabling certificate verification can hide a trust-store problem and does not configure wkhtmltopdf to trust the certificate. Install the correct CA chain or repair the endpoint instead.

3. Use Snappy’s option mechanism deliberately

Laravel Snappy passes supported wkhtmltopdf options to the binary. The wrapper documentation shows both global configuration and per-document options:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
use BarryvdhSnappyFacadesSnappyPdf as PDF;

$pdf = PDF::loadView('reports.invoice', ['invoice' => $invoice])
    ->setOption('load-error-handling', 'abort')
    ->setOption('javascript-delay', 500);

return $pdf->download('invoice.pdf');

Use only options supported by the binary actually installed. Option names and available switches can vary between builds, so verify with wkhtmltopdf --extended-help and the installed version’s documentation.

Image loading

The official settings reference exposes web.loadImages. Verify that images have not been disabled globally or per document. In command-line builds this corresponds to the image-loading switches shown by that binary’s help output; do not assume a setting from a different package is available.

Load-error behavior

The load.loadErrorHandling setting accepts abort, skip or ignore. In Snappy, the equivalent option is commonly passed as:

$pdf->setOption('load-error-handling', 'abort');
  • abort stops generation when a resource fails, which is useful during diagnosis.
  • skip continues without the failed resource.
  • ignore continues while suppressing the load failure.

skip and ignore can make a job appear successful while producing a PDF with a missing image. They change failure handling; they do not repair DNS, TLS, HTTP status or authentication.

4. Check URL and document details that commonly break retrieval

Redirects and signed URLs

Generate the final URL before calling Snappy and test it with curl --location. Ensure a signed URL has not expired between HTML generation and PDF rendering, and that its signature covers the exact scheme, host, path and query string after redirects.

Private or session-protected images

If the image is behind application authentication, a browser session cookie is not automatically available to wkhtmltopdf. Supply the required headers or cookies through supported renderer options, or expose a short-lived, least-privilege asset URL. Never put a permanent secret in a public image URL.

Content type and bytes

An endpoint that returns an HTML error page with status 200 can look like a successful network request but still fail as an image. Check the response headers and inspect the downloaded file. Confirm that the declared content type and actual bytes match PNG, JPEG or another format your build can decode.

5. If you switch to a local image file

Using a local path avoids remote DNS and TLS, but introduces a filesystem boundary. The renderer process must be able to see the path, traverse every parent directory and read the file. Test as the service account:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo -u www-data test -r /var/www/app/storage/app/public/logo.png
  && echo readable
sudo -u www-data ls -l /var/www/app/storage/app/public/logo.png

Use the correct absolute path or a supported file:// URL, and verify that the path is mounted inside the same container as wkhtmltopdf. The settings reference documents blocking local-file access; Snappy also documents options for allowing specific paths. Grant only the directory needed by the document where your build supports an allow-list.

Do not enable broad local access as a blanket remedy for remote HTTPS failures. The KnpLabs wrapper warns that --enable-local-file-access can be dangerous when HTML or JavaScript is untrusted, because a malicious document may read files available to the renderer. The project security guidance likewise warns against processing untrusted HTML/JavaScript. Sanitize input, isolate rendering, run with a restricted account and avoid exposing secrets in readable directories.

6. Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely layer Next check
Host not found or name-resolution errors DNS or network namespace Run getent hosts and curl inside the renderer container as the service account.
TLS, certificate or handshake error CA trust, hostname, protocol or proxy Inspect the full redirect chain and certificate chain from that host; repair trust rather than disabling verification.
HTTP 401, 403 or redirect to login Authentication or access policy Provide narrowly scoped headers/cookies or a short-lived asset URL supported by your build.
PDF succeeds but image is absent Image disabled, load error skipped/ignored, invalid bytes or unsupported format Use abort while diagnosing, inspect response bytes and verify image-loading settings.
Local file blocked Local-file policy or permissions Check the process user, absolute path, container mount and a narrowly scoped allow-list.
Works manually but not in Laravel Different binary, environment or cached configuration Compare config/snappy.php, environment variables, worker lifecycle and the binary path/version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

7. Reliability, performance and cost considerations

Remote images add DNS, connection, TLS and download latency to every PDF. Keep assets close to the renderer, serve appropriately sized images, avoid expiring URLs during long jobs and set a realistic Snappy timeout for your workload. Caching at the network or application layer can reduce repeated downloads, but make sure a cache does not serve stale authorization-sensitive content.

For reproducibility, pin the operating-system package or binary build, log the renderer version and retain stderr for failed jobs. A browser and a server may legitimately have different certificate stores, proxies and IPv4/IPv6 routes; compare those environments rather than changing unrelated Laravel code.

8. Should you upgrade or migrate?

The official downloads page identifies the 0.12.6 stable series, released June 11, 2020. The project’s status and security pages describe its Qt/WebKit foundation as aging and recommend evaluating alternatives such as WeasyPrint or Prince for report generation, and Puppeteer for dynamic JavaScript sites. These are migration candidates, not proof that an upgrade will fix your particular image failure.

Before changing engines, compare the CSS and JavaScript features your templates use, deployment requirements, isolation and security posture, font handling, pagination fidelity, operational cost and migration effort. Build a representative test set containing authenticated images, redirects, web fonts, charts and long pages; compare the resulting PDFs and failure behavior in your own environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing load-error-handling repair an HTTPS image failure?

No. It controls whether wkhtmltopdf aborts, skips, or ignores a failed resource. Diagnose DNS, TLS, HTTP status, authentication and image bytes first.

Why does the same URL work on my laptop but not in a queue worker?

The worker may use a different container, DNS configuration, certificate store, proxy, IPv4/IPv6 route, binary build or service-account permissions.

Is --enable-local-file-access safe to add globally?

No. Broad local access can expose files to untrusted HTML or JavaScript. Prefer a narrowly allowed path and isolate the renderer.
