To download a customizable color box over a background, first create or extract an exact color palette, then assemble adjacent colored shapes on a canvas, set the background, and export the design as an image. Adobe Color is useful for generating HEX or RGB values; Adobe Express can place those values into editable blocks and download the finished design. The method below also covers opaque and transparent backgrounds, color accuracy, export checks, and a browser-free option when your finished box already exists on a web page.
Choose the workflow that matches your starting point
There are two practical ways to obtain the colors. Use image extraction when a photograph, screenshot, or existing artwork is your reference. Use the color wheel when you know a starting color and want a structured relationship between swatches.

The title does not specify a fixed canvas size, number of swatches, image format, or a particular source website. You can therefore choose dimensions and the number of blocks that fit your use case.
1. Create and record the palette in Adobe Color
Extract colors from an image
- Open Adobe Color’s image-based color tool and upload the reference image.
- Move the color selectors until they represent the areas you actually want. This is important when shadows, highlights, or background pixels would otherwise dominate a swatch.
- Record every resulting color as a HEX or RGB value. Keep the values in a note or spreadsheet so you can enter the same colors in the design editor without guessing from appearance.
Generate a palette from a base color
- Open the color wheel and choose a starting color.
- Select the harmony that matches the intended relationship: monochromatic for variations of one hue, complementary for opposing hues, analogous for neighboring hues, or triadic for three balanced positions around the wheel.
- Record the resulting HEX or RGB values before moving to the layout stage.
Adobe documents palette creation, swatch refinement, and value downloads. Interfaces and plan boundaries can change, so check the controls shown in your current account. Automatic application of palettes to designs may require a paid plan; that does not mean a paid plan is automatically required for every manual color entry or image download.

2. Build the customizable color box
Create the canvas
- Start a new design in Adobe Express and choose the dimensions required by the destination: social post, presentation, documentation, or another target.
- Decide whether the background is part of the final image. If it is, add or choose it before export. If the color box will be placed over another image later, plan to export transparency instead.
Add editable color blocks
- Insert a rectangle for each palette swatch.
- Arrange the rectangles edge-to-edge, in a grid, strip, or another layout. Use alignment and spacing controls so seams are intentional and consistent.
- Select each rectangle and enter its recorded HEX or RGB value in the color picker. Do not rely on visual matching; a nearby-looking color can still be a different value.
- Use the eyedropper only when you need to sample a color from the design or a background photo. For a reproducible palette, typed values are preferable.
- Keep the shapes as separate editable objects until the colors, order, labels, and spacing are final. This makes later customization possible without rebuilding the box.
Make the background part of the composition
For a filled result, set the canvas background to the desired color or image and check that the blocks remain readable against it. If the background is supplied by another application, leave the canvas with no fill and export a transparent PNG. Transparency is not the same as a white background: transparent pixels reveal whatever is behind the image when it is placed elsewhere.
3. Export the image and verify it
- Use the design’s Download command and select the image format appropriate for the destination. PNG is the documented choice when transparency is required.
- For an opaque graphic, open the downloaded file against a contrasting viewer background. This catches accidental transparent edges or an unintended white fill.
- For a transparent graphic, place the PNG over both a light and a dark test background. Check the outside edge of every rectangle for halos, gaps, or antialiasing that makes adjacent blocks look misaligned.
- Zoom in and compare the exported blocks with the recorded HEX or RGB values in the source design. Also verify that no hidden guide, text layer, or background object was included accidentally.
- Rename the file with a useful version such as palette-box-dark-v2.png and retain the value list alongside it. The value list is what makes a later revision or recreation reliable.
Filled background or transparent PNG?

Adobe Express specifically documents the No fill plus Transparent PNG procedure. It does not establish one required export size for this task, so choose dimensions based on where the image will be used rather than copying an arbitrary number.
Color accuracy and layout decisions
Preserve exact values
HEX and RGB values are the handoff between palette creation and design assembly. Save them in order, for example, “01 background, 02 accent, 03 shadow,” and use the same order for the rectangles. This prevents a later edit from silently swapping two visually similar colors.

Design for the background
A dark background can make saturated blocks appear brighter, while a light background can reduce the apparent contrast of pale swatches. If the image is a reference card, add labels or values outside the blocks rather than embedding text over colors that need to remain visually clean.

Separate shapes, named layers, and an external value list are more useful than flattening early. Flatten only the final export. If a client requests a different harmony, a larger gap, or a transparent version, you can change the source design and export again.
Common problems and fixes
The downloaded image has a white background
The canvas probably still has a fill, or the export format does not preserve transparency. Set the background to No fill and select Transparent PNG. Reopen the file over a dark test background to confirm that the outside pixels are transparent.

The blocks do not match the reference photo
Sampling points may have landed on highlights, shadows, or compression artifacts. Return to Adobe Color, refine the selectors, record the revised HEX or RGB values, and replace the block colors by typing those values.
Adjacent rectangles show hairline gaps
Inspect the layout at high zoom. Remove unintended spacing, align edges numerically where possible, and export again. If the receiving platform rescales the image, test at the displayed size as well as at 100 percent.
The color picker will not accept a value
Check whether the editor expects HEX or RGB notation and whether the leading “#” is required. If a palette-application feature is locked, enter the values manually in each shape instead of assuming the entire workflow is unavailable.

The exported file looks different in another app
Different viewers can apply color management differently. Compare the actual saved file, not a screenshot of a viewer, and avoid repeatedly converting the image between formats. Keep the original editable design for future exports.
