When Premiere refuses a file, imports only its audio, hangs, or shows incorrect speed or proportions, the filename extension is rarely the whole explanation. A MOV or MP4 is a container; the codec, audio stream, frame rate, folder structure, permissions, cache, GPU settings, and Premiere version determine whether the media works. Use the least destructive checks first: test a known-good clip in a blank project, copy the problem media to a local SSD, inspect its real properties, use Media Browser for camera-card footage, then clear cache and test preferences or hardware decoding before transcoding.

Start by identifying the symptom

What you see Most likely areas to check
Nothing happens or Premiere says the file is unsupported Codec, damaged media, permissions, storage, plug-ins, or version compatibility
Only audio imports Unsupported or damaged video stream, deprecated QuickTime codec, incomplete AVCHD structure, or GPU decoding
Only video imports Unsupported or damaged audio codec; convert audio to WAV or AIFF
Import remains pending or appears frozen Audio conforming, cache generation, long compressed media, slow storage, cloud synchronization, or a version-specific bug
Clip is offline after import Moved or renamed media, unavailable drive, or read permissions
Footage plays too fast or slowly Incorrect frame-rate interpretation or variable-frame-rate (VFR) media
Image is stretched or squeezed Incorrect pixel aspect ratio
Premiere crashes or displays black frames Corrupt media, cache, GPU decoding, third-party plug-ins, or application version

First establish whether the project or the file is at fault

  1. Close the current project and create a new blank project.
  2. Import one small, known-good MP4 or MOV.
  3. Import the problem file by itself.
  4. Repeat with a fresh copy of the file from its original source if possible.

If every file fails, investigate Premiere, cache, permissions, storage, plug-ins, the installation, or GPU compatibility. If only one file fails, concentrate on its codec, integrity, metadata, or folder structure. If media from one phone or camera fails, check that device’s recording format and whether the card was copied completely. A file that works in a blank project but not the original project points toward project state, project settings, cache, or a plug-in—not necessarily bad media.

Inspect the codec, not just the extension

Use MediaInfo or equivalent operating-system tools to inspect the container, video and audio codecs, frame rate (constant or variable), dimensions, bit depth, chroma subsampling, sample rate, channels, stream count, and file size. Adobe’s reference documentation explains why containers such as MOV, AVI, and MXF can contain very different codecs: Premiere supported formats reference.

A supported extension does not guarantee that every codec variant inside it is supported. Also check for a zero-byte or unusually small file, a partially copied recording, or an image or movie that exceeds Adobe’s documented limits of 256 megapixels and 32,768 pixels in either dimension. The documented maximum sequence frame size is 10,240 × 8,192 pixels.

  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Copy media to a local drive and verify access

  1. Copy one test file from a camera card, network share, cloud folder, USB device, or external drive to a local internal SSD.
  2. Wait for cloud software to finish downloading the file; an online-only placeholder is not a usable media source.
  3. Open the copy in a normal media player and confirm that it runs through the expected duration.
  4. Confirm that your account has read access to the media and read/write access to Premiere’s cache and audio-preview locations.

A media player opening the file does not prove Premiere can decode it; different applications use different decoders and error handling. Adobe recommends moving problem media and checking permissions when troubleshooting imports: Adobe import troubleshooting.

Use Media Browser for camera-card media

AVCHD/MTS and other camera formats may use metadata and companion folders to describe clips, spanned recordings, and their audio/video relationship. Copy the complete card structure rather than isolated files.

  1. Open the Media Browser panel.
  2. Navigate to the original card or its correctly copied folder structure.
  3. Select the clip shown as an audio/video asset.
  4. Import it from Media Browser instead of dragging a loose file from Finder or File Explorer.

This can restore relationships that are lost when an individual MTS file is separated from the card structure. Do not treat renaming an extension as conversion: changing .mov to .mp4 changes neither the codec nor damaged data.

Clear Premiere’s media cache

When Premiere opens

  1. On Windows, choose Edit > Preferences > Media Cache. On macOS, choose Premiere > Settings > Media Cache.
  2. Select Delete beside Remove Media Cache Files.
  3. Choose either unused cache files or all cache files from the system, depending on the diagnosis.
  4. Restart Premiere and allow cache, conforming, and waveform files to regenerate.

Adobe’s current instructions are at Clear media cache using Preferences or Settings. If you moved the cache to a custom location, use the location shown in Premiere rather than deleting only the default folder. Adobe recommends a fast SSD or NVMe drive, ideally dedicated to cache: Manage media cache.

Manual cleanup

With Premiere closed, Adobe lists these default locations: Windows Users<username>AppDataRoamingAdobeCommon; macOS /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common. Delete relevant cache contents and empty the Recycle Bin or Trash. Premiere recreates required files, so the next import can take longer: Delete media cache files manually.

Reset preferences and isolate plug-ins

If cache cleanup changes nothing, close Premiere and relaunch while holding Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS). Use the reset-options dialog to reset preferences and, where available, disable third-party video plug-ins. Export or back up custom keyboard shortcuts, workspaces, and other settings first. Resetting preferences changes application state; it cannot make an unsupported codec readable. Adobe’s Premiere Help hub documents reset and plug-in troubleshooting: Premiere desktop Help.

Test hardware decoding and rendering

  1. Open Preferences on Windows or Settings on macOS, then open Media.
  2. Temporarily disable Enable hardware accelerated decoding.
  3. Restart Premiere if prompted and test the file again.

Adobe documents this control in Media preferences. If the issue is specific to certain MOV or MTS media, also try File > Project Settings > General > Renderer > Mercury Playback Engine Software Only, where available. It is slower and is not available on Apple Silicon Macs, so use it as a diagnostic test rather than a permanent performance setting. See Adobe’s audio-only import guidance and rendering troubleshooting.

Correct interpretation after the clip imports

Wrong speed or duration

Right-click the clip in the Project panel and choose Modify > Interpret Footage, then assign the correct frame rate. This changes how Premiere calculates playback duration; it does not change the underlying frames.

Phone footage, screen recordings, video calls, and some action cameras often use variable frame rate. If interpretation does not eliminate drift, stutter, or sync errors, transcode to constant-frame-rate media before editing.

When audio is missing or slow

Premiere may be conforming compressed audio and creating CFA and PEK files for processing and waveform display. That work can take time, especially after cache deletion, and is not automatically an import failure. Keep the project and cache locations supplied with free space.

For production audio, use uncompressed WAV or AIFF, commonly at 48,000 Hz for video. Adobe lists supported sample rates of 8,000, 11,025, 22,050, 32,000, 44,100, 48,000, and 96,000 Hz. Details: Audio sample rates and Audio conforming specifications. Audio CDs expose .cda references and cannot be imported directly; convert them to WAV or AIFF first: Importing digital audio.

Diagnose unusually slow imports

  • Check whether Premiere is still conforming, indexing, or generating cache files.
  • Test a short clip instead of a long recording.
  • Move the media to a local SSD and verify free space.
  • Clear stale cache and restart.
  • Check Premiere’s version and Adobe’s known-issues list.

Adobe’s June 17, 2026 known-issues page records a fix in Premiere 26.3 for slow imports of certain long compressed MPEG-2, HEVC, and MPEG-4 AVC media. The same page lists fixes for specific 6.2K HEVC 4:2:2 10-bit footage on NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs and AVCHD playback freezes. These are case-specific fixes, not a guarantee that every import problem disappears after updating: Known and fixed issues.

Transcode only after the reversible checks

Transcode when the codec is unsupported or deprecated, the file uses VFR and causes sync problems, the recording is partially damaged but still decodable elsewhere, the card structure is unavailable, or Premiere repeatedly crashes on that file after cache and hardware tests. Preserve the camera original and give the derivative a clear name.

Target Advantages Trade-offs
Apple ProRes, Avid DNx, or CineForm intermediate Intra-frame editing performance and predictable decoding Much larger files and greater storage use
H.264 MP4 for compatibility testing Small and widely recognized Still highly compressed and less ideal as an editing master
WAV or AIFF audio Fewer conforming and codec problems Larger files

Transcoding can alter frame rate, timecode, color, metadata, or channel layout if configured incorrectly. Use Adobe Media Encoder (official page), Shutter Encoder (official page), or FFmpeg (official project page) according to your workflow. A standard H.264 output is useful for a simple compatibility test; an intraframe intermediate is usually the better editing master.

When the file itself is damaged

  1. Re-copy the complete card or original recording rather than relying on the first transfer.
  2. Compare a second copy and inspect the file size and duration.
  3. Test the fresh copy in another player or media-inspection tool.
  4. Try a controlled transcode only if another decoder can read the media.
  5. If the file fails consistently in multiple applications, recover it from the original card or source, or obtain a new recording.

Do not keep changing Premiere settings indefinitely when the source is incomplete, encrypted, DRM-protected, or proprietary. A playable file in another application may still use a decoder that Premiere does not support.

Escalation order

  1. New blank project and one known-good clip.
  2. Fresh local copy with verified permissions and free space.
  3. MediaInfo inspection.
  4. Media Browser for camera-card media.
  5. Media-cache cleanup.
  6. Preference reset and third-party plug-in isolation.
  7. Hardware-decoding and Software Only tests.
  8. Known-issues and version check.
  9. Targeted transcode.
  10. Source-media recovery or re-copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Premiere import audio but not video?

The container may hold a video codec Premiere cannot decode, a deprecated QuickTime codec, a damaged video stream, or an incomplete camera-card structure. Inspect the codec, use Media Browser for card media, clear cache, test hardware decoding, and transcode only if necessary.

Does renaming MOV to MP4 fix an import?

No. Renaming changes the filename extension, not the embedded codec or damaged data. It is not a conversion.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Why does footage play too fast after import?

The clip may have an incorrect frame-rate interpretation or variable frame rate. Use Modify > Interpret Footage first; transcode to constant-frame-rate media if timing or sync remains unreliable.

Should I clear Premiere’s media cache?

Yes, when cache data may be stale or corrupted. Cache files regenerate and the next import can be slower, but clearing the cache cannot add support for an unsupported codec.

Why does Media Browser work when File > Import does not?

Camera formats can depend on metadata and companion folders. Media Browser reads that structure, while importing an isolated file may lose the relationship between spanned clips and their audio or video streams.

The Bottom Line

Work from least destructive to most invasive: isolate the file, inspect its codec, copy it locally, preserve camera-card structure, clear cache, test preferences and hardware decoding, then transcode while keeping the original. If a fresh local copy fails in multiple applications, recover the recording rather than repeatedly changing Premiere settings.
