Audacity can reduce steady background sounds such as fan noise, tape hiss, electrical hum, buzz and a constant microphone noise floor. It does not truly reconstruct audio hidden by noise, and aggressive settings can make speech or music sound watery, metallic or artificial. The reliable workflow is to capture a noise profile from a noise-only section, apply Noise Reduction gently, and audition both the cleaned signal and the removed residue.
The quick method
- Save a copy of the original project or audio file.
- Select a few seconds containing only the unwanted background sound.
- Open Effect → Noise Reduction. In some versions the command is under Effect → Noise Removal and Repair → Noise Reduction.
- Click Get Noise Profile.
- Select the audio to clean with Ctrl+A (Windows/Linux) or Command+A (macOS).
- Open Noise Reduction again, choose Reduce, preview, and apply the lowest settings that sound natural.
Audacity documents this effect for relatively constant noise, not changing traffic, audience sound, background conversations or music mixed with the wanted audio. See the Audacity Noise Reduction manual.
Before you start
Identify the noise
Listen with headphones and decide whether the problem is broadband hiss, a steady fan, a narrow hum or whistle, low-frequency rumble, intermittent clicks, changing traffic, background speech, or room echo. The correct tool depends on that distinction.
Use a representative noise-only sample
Find a pause where the microphone captured the unwanted sound but no voice, breathing, music, cough or other wanted material. Audacity’s technical minimum is 2,048 samples (about 0.05 seconds at 44.1 kHz), but a few seconds of representative noise generally produces a more useful profile. A longer selection is preferable; duplicating a tiny sample does not create better noise statistics.

The profile is temporary and is not retained after Audacity closes, so you must capture it again in a later session. If the noise changes substantially during the recording, use separate profiles and process those passages separately.
Capture the noise profile
- Drag across the clean noise-only section.
- Open Effect → Noise Reduction (or the Noise Removal and Repair submenu).
- Click Get Noise Profile. The dialog closes or returns to the track after storing the profile.
Never include the speaker’s voice or music in this selection. If they are in the profile, Audacity may classify parts of them as noise and remove them later.
Apply Noise Reduction safely
- Select the complete track, or only a passage with the same noise character.
- Open Noise Reduction again.
- Start with Reduce selected and use Preview on a representative speech or music passage.
- Switch to Residue and listen to what Audacity plans to remove. Intelligible words, breaths, instrument notes or important ambience in the residue mean the settings are too aggressive or the profile is contaminated.
- Compare the preview with the untreated audio before clicking the effect’s apply button.
Noise Reduction attenuates a learned profile; it cannot restore words that were masked by loud interference. Leaving a small, consistent room tone is often more natural than forcing the track to silence.
Recommended starting settings
Audacity’s feature guidance suggests 12 dB Noise Reduction, Sensitivity 6 and Frequency Smoothing 3 as a starting point. These are not universal presets. The manual lists 6 dB as the default reduction, Sensitivity from 0–24, and explains that lower smoothing generally preserves music detail while higher smoothing is often more suitable for spoken word. See the official Noise Reduction feature page and manual.

|---|---|---|
| Noise Reduction | 6–12 dB; 12 dB is Audacity’s published starting suggestion | Increase gradually only while residual noise is distracting; lower it when the voice becomes thin, dull or watery. |
| Sensitivity | 6 | Higher values classify more material as noise. Lower it first if consonants, breaths or instrument notes disappear. |
| Frequency Smoothing | 3 | Try modestly higher smoothing for rough spoken-word artifacts or lower values for music detail. It cannot repair severe over-processing. |
A safe adjustment sequence is to preview the same passage each time, inspect Residue, lower Sensitivity before increasing reduction when wanted audio is being removed, and stop as soon as the voice sounds natural.

Fixing watery, metallic or musical artifacts
Underwater or watery speech
Undo the effect, capture a cleaner profile, then lower Noise Reduction and Sensitivity. Audacity specifically recommends reducing those controls when the result is watery or distorted. If the voice and noise occupy the same frequencies, accept some remaining noise rather than destroying intelligibility. The warning and recovery guidance are covered on the Audacity feature page.
Bird-like tones or tinkling
Short random “musical noise” tones usually indicate over-processing or an inaccurate profile. Lower Sensitivity and reduction, try modest smoothing, and process only the affected passage if its noise differs from the rest.
Words or breaths disappear
Use a noise-only profile and lower Sensitivity. Check Residue: wanted speech or music there confirms that Audacity is classifying the foreground as noise.
The track is simply quieter
Noise Reduction is not a loudness-normalization tool. After cleaning, use a separate normalization, loudness or compression step if your delivery format requires it.
Choose the right Audacity tool
| Problem | Best first tool | Why and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Steady hiss, fan or broadband noise | Noise Reduction | Uses a representative noise profile; excessive settings create artifacts. |
| Narrow mains hum or whistle | Notch Filter | Targets a stable frequency band; identify the fundamental and harmonics in Spectrogram view. See the alternative techniques. |
| Low rumble, handling or HVAC vibration | High-Pass Filter or EQ | Attenuates low frequencies; use conservatively so speech does not become thin. |
| Noise only between phrases | Noise Gate | Lowers audio below a threshold during pauses; it cannot remove noise underneath continuous speech and can chop word endings. See the Noise Gate manual. |
| Clicks, pops or very short glitches | Click Removal or Repair | Designed for isolated defects, not a continuous noise bed. |
| Visible isolated tones or events | Spectral Editing | More surgical, but requires skill and can leave unnatural gaps. |

Handling common recording situations
Fan or air-conditioner noise
If its level and character stay stable, capture a section containing only the fan and apply gentle Noise Reduction. Recordings made farther from the fan and with lower input gain usually need less processing.
Electrical hum
Use Spectrogram view to locate the fundamental and harmonics, then try Notch Filter before broadband Noise Reduction. If possible, fix the recording chain—cables, grounding, gain staging or the power source—rather than relying on heavy restoration.
Recommended Free Tools
Wind and handling noise
Severe wind is usually non-stationary. A high-pass filter may reduce rumble, while individual bursts are better handled with editing or spectral repair.
Traffic, applause, background voices or music
These sounds change over time and often overlap the main voice’s frequencies. A single profile-based pass or Noise Gate will not reliably separate them. Use manual spectral work or a speech/source-separation tool, understanding that automated enhancement can alter words, tone or ambience.
Echo and reverberation
Noise Reduction is not de-reverberation. If room reflections dominate, changing reduction settings will not solve the underlying problem and may make the voice more artificial.

Stereo recordings and multiple noise beds
Check channel selection before processing. If only one channel is noisy, processing both can unnecessarily change the clean channel. For recordings containing, for example, hum and hiss, correct the narrow hum first, then apply gentle broadband reduction; use a gate only for pauses.

“The noise sample is too short”
Select a longer, clean section—preferably several seconds. Do not repeat a tiny block to simulate a longer sample.
“The profile disappeared”
Profiles are session-specific. Re-select noise-only audio and click Get Noise Profile after reopening Audacity.
There is no clean noise-only section
- Look for a short pause elsewhere in the recording.
- Use the most consistent room tone available and apply a lighter reduction.
- Try a narrow filter or spectral editing for isolated interference.
- For voice-only material, consider a speech-enhancement service, with the privacy and artifact trade-offs described below.
The noise varies across the file
Divide the recording into sections with similar noise, capture representative profiles, and apply separate gentle passes. One profile cannot accurately describe unrelated noise beds.
When another solution is better
Adobe Podcast Enhance Speech
Adobe’s browser-based service is aimed at spoken audio and can reduce background noise and echo when there is no usable noise-only sample. Its free plan lists audio-only enhancement, one file at a time, a 30-minute and 500 MB limit, and up to one hour of enhancement per day; paid plans add video, batch processing, strength controls and larger limits. Check the live pricing and plans pages because terms can change. Uploading is unsuitable for privacy-sensitive material, and speech enhancement is not intended for full music mixes. Try the Enhance Speech tool when convenience outweighs detailed offline control.

Export without losing your safety copy
Keep the original recording and Audacity project. Export a high-quality master first, then create compressed delivery files as needed for your podcast, video or music workflow. Listen to the exported file—not only the project preview—on headphones and ordinary speakers before replacing the source.
Preventing noise next time
- Record in the quietest room available and move away from fans, refrigerators and air-conditioning vents.
- Place the microphone close enough to the speaker to improve the voice-to-noise ratio without clipping.
- Set input gain conservatively and monitor with headphones.
- Record several seconds of room tone before and after the take; it provides a representative profile if restoration is needed.
Audacity’s support guidance emphasizes that a quiet recording environment is more reliable than trying to remove severe noise afterward: recording and noise-reduction guidance.
