How to Fix a Webcam Not Working on Zoom (Windows, Mac, and Browser)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fastest way to find the cause is to test the webcam outside Zoom. If it works in Windows Camera, FaceTime, or Photo Booth, the hardware is probably functioning and the problem is usually Zoom’s camera choice, permissions, browser access, or another app using the camera. If it fails everywhere, investigate the shutter or hardware switch, connection, operating-system permissions, drivers, security software, and the webcam itself.

Start with these quick checks

  1. Open the laptop’s physical shutter, remove a webcam cover, and check any camera-disable key or privacy switch.
  2. For a USB webcam, reconnect it directly to the computer, bypassing a dock or hub, and try another USB port.
  3. Quit Teams, Google Meet tabs, FaceTime, Photo Booth, Skype, Discord, OBS, camera utilities, and other browser tabs that may be using the camera.
  4. Restart Zoom. If the camera remains unavailable, restart the computer.
  5. In Zoom, choose the intended camera under Settings → Video, or use the arrow beside Start Video during a meeting.

Zoom lists incorrect camera selection, missing permissions, another application holding the camera, restarting the app or device, and reinstalling Zoom as core troubleshooting paths (Zoom’s camera troubleshooting guide).

Use one test to choose the right troubleshooting path

Windows

Open Start → Camera and check the preview. Microsoft recommends the Camera app to determine whether a fault affects Windows generally or only one application (Microsoft camera troubleshooting).

macOS

Test with Photo Booth or FaceTime. Apple identifies these built-in apps as useful isolation tests, but their automatic camera access does not prove that Zoom has permission (Apple camera permissions).

Fix the Zoom desktop app

Select and test the camera

  1. Open Zoom and select Settings.
  2. Choose Video.
  3. Use the camera menu to select the integrated webcam, USB webcam, monitor camera, capture device, or other intended device.
  4. Confirm that the preview appears. Zoom’s video test can be used before joining or during a meeting (Zoom video testing).

During a meeting, click the arrow beside Start Video or Stop Video, choose Video Settings or Select a Camera, and select the correct device (Zoom camera selection).

Check virtual cameras

OBS, camera-effects utilities, manufacturer software, and capture tools can create virtual cameras. For a basic test, select the physical webcam. If it works while the virtual camera does not, troubleshoot the intermediary software rather than Zoom’s hardware selection.

Distinguish a meeting restriction

If the preview works in Zoom but video cannot be enabled in a particular meeting, the host or organization may have restricted participant video. That is a meeting-control issue, not proof that the webcam is broken.

Repair Windows camera access

Enable privacy permissions

  1. Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Camera in Windows 11. Windows 10 uses Settings → Privacy → Camera.
  2. Turn on Camera access.
  3. Turn on Let apps access your camera.
  4. Enable desktop-app access where shown. Zoom and browsers are desktop apps and may not appear as individual entries (Microsoft Windows camera permissions).

If a switch is missing, greyed out, or turns itself off, an employer, school, antivirus product, or device-management policy may control it. Contact the administrator.

  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)

Update the camera driver

  1. Open Start, search for Device Manager, and expand Cameras.
  2. Right-click the webcam and choose Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, then inspect Advanced options → Optional updates for camera-related drivers.

Microsoft associates 0xA00F4294: Video start failed with outdated or incompatible drivers, but an error code does not guarantee one universal fix (Microsoft camera troubleshooting). Prefer your computer maker’s or webcam maker’s official support page; avoid generic driver-download sites.

Repair macOS camera access

  1. Open Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
  2. Turn on access for Zoom.
  3. Quit and reopen Zoom.

If Zoom is not listed, open it and attempt to start video so macOS can request permission, then return to the Camera panel. Zoom documents the same macOS permission path (Zoom macOS permissions). On a managed Mac, an administrator may control the setting.

Fix Zoom in a browser

Zoom Web App troubleshooting has two permission layers: the operating system must allow the browser to use the camera, and the Zoom website must be allowed inside the browser.

Chrome

  1. Open Chrome and go to Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera.
  2. Allow the Zoom website and select the correct camera if several are listed.
  3. Reload the meeting page.

Chrome notes that another tab or application can prevent a site from starting video (Chrome camera permissions). On Windows, also enable camera access for desktop apps; on macOS, enable Chrome under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.

Safari

Enable Safari in macOS Camera permissions, then open Safari → Settings → Websites → Camera and allow the Zoom site. Zoom’s browser guide covers the combined system and browser checks (Zoom Web App permissions).

Target the symptom

Zoom cannot detect a camera

Check the shutter or hardware switch, cable and USB port, operating-system detection, camera permissions, and drivers. An external webcam that is missing on multiple ports and computers is more likely a hardware or cable failure than a Zoom setting.

The camera is detected but the preview is black

Open the shutter, close every competing camera application, check antivirus or endpoint-security webcam protection, and restart the computer. Zoom identifies security software as a possible black-screen cause (Zoom black-video troubleshooting). Remove Zoom from a blocked list or allow camera access rather than leaving protection disabled.

Video is frozen or flickers

Test a direct USB connection, remove a dock or hub from the path, close camera utilities, and update the driver or firmware from the manufacturer. An unstable connection or competing utility can interrupt an otherwise selected camera.

It works in another app but not Zoom

This makes a Zoom-specific setting or permission problem more likely, although it does not conclusively rule out every driver issue. Recheck Zoom’s camera dropdown, permissions, virtual-camera selection, and security blocks.

When reinstalling Zoom makes sense

Reinstall only after the webcam works in the operating-system camera app, permissions are enabled, other camera applications are closed, the correct camera is selected, and security software is not blocking Zoom. Then uninstall Zoom completely, download the current desktop app from Zoom’s official download center, reinstall it, and test again (Zoom camera and reinstall guidance). Reinstallation cannot repair a closed shutter, disabled hardware, blocked Windows permission, failed USB connection, or defective webcam.

When to stop troubleshooting

  • The camera fails in Windows Camera, FaceTime, or Photo Booth as well as Zoom.
  • An external webcam is not detected on multiple direct USB ports or another computer.
  • The cable or camera has physical damage or intermittent operation.
  • A work or school policy prevents changing camera permissions or security settings.
  • The manufacturer supplies a model-specific driver or firmware repair that is unavailable or unsuccessful.

At that point, contact the computer or webcam manufacturer, your organization’s IT department, or replace the device. If the camera works outside Zoom, do not buy a replacement yet: resolve the Zoom, browser, privacy, or security setting first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Zoom say it cannot detect a camera?

The camera may be disabled by a shutter or privacy key, disconnected, blocked by permissions or security software, in use by another app, missing a driver, or simply not selected in Zoom.

Why is my Zoom camera screen black?

Check the physical shutter, close other camera apps, select the correct device, and inspect antivirus or endpoint-security webcam protection.

Why does my webcam work in Teams but not Zoom?

That result makes a Zoom-specific selection, permission, virtual-camera, or security setting more likely. Recheck Zoom’s Video settings and access permissions.

Do I need to reinstall Zoom?

Usually not. Reinstall only after the webcam works in the native camera app and connection, permissions, camera selection, competing apps, and security software have been checked.
