Start playback, open Audio & Subtitles, and select the caption or subtitle track you want. If it is selected but missing, test another title before changing settings: a problem with one episode often points to that title’s track or language availability, while a problem across titles is more likely to involve the device, app, browser, or playback. Then check caption appearance and device accessibility settings before restarting, updating, or reinstalling Disney+.
First, narrow down the problem
Try the same title on another device if you can, and try a different title on the device that is having trouble. This separates a title-specific issue from a device or app issue.
| What you see | Where to look first | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The subtitle control or language you want is missing | Player controls, device support, or title and regional availability | Open Audio & Subtitles during playback and test another title. |
| A track is selected, but no text appears | Caption appearance settings or a faulty track | Check caption styling, then test a different title. |
| Captions work on one title but not another | The affected title’s available or working caption track | Try another episode, language, or device. |
| Captions fail across titles on one device | Device accessibility settings or Disney+ app state | Check accessibility settings, then restart and update the device and app. |
| Captions fail in a browser while video otherwise plays | Browser data, extensions, or browser settings | Try a private window and temporarily disable extensions for testing. |
| Captions are delayed, incomplete, or keep turning off | Title track, playback, or app/device behavior | Test another title and device; note the exact title and episode if the problem persists. |
Subtitles generally translate or transcribe dialogue. Closed captions, often labelled CC or SDH, may also identify speakers, music, and sound effects. Disney+ lists captions among the subtitle options, but a title may not offer both types in every language. See Disney+’s guide to video language options.
Turn subtitles or captions on in the player
The control is usually available while a movie or episode is playing; its icon and position depend on the device and app version. The instructions below reflect Disney+ guidance checked on August 18, 2026; labels and gestures can change.

Web browser and phone or tablet
- Start playing the title.
- Open the keyboard icon or Audio & Subtitles control, usually near the upper-right of the player.
- Select an available subtitle or closed-caption language.
- Close the menu with the X or back arrow. If text does not appear, pause and resume playback, then test another title.
Disney+ says the selection is saved to the profile and may carry over to the next title when that language is available. Language choices vary by title and country or region. See Disney+’s video language instructions.
Smart TVs and other TV-connected devices
- Begin playback and open Audio & Subtitles, usually at the bottom-right of the screen.
- Select the track you want and close the menu.
- If the player shows a three-dot menu instead, open it to find the audio and subtitle choices.
Roku
- Play the title and press the * (asterisk) button on the Roku remote.
- Select the desired caption or subtitle option, then return to playback.
Roku’s device-level caption setting is under Settings > Accessibility > Captions mode. Some streaming apps manage captions inside the app instead of following Roku’s global setting, so use Disney+’s player control first. See Roku’s guidance on features that behave differently in streaming apps.
Apple TV
- Start playback and swipe down on the Apple TV remote to open playback options.
- Select the subtitle or caption track.
- If you want system-level captions enabled by default, check Settings > General > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning and turn on Closed Captions + SDH.
The system setting and Disney+’s in-player track choice are separate controls. Apple documents its accessibility setting at Apple’s subtitles and captioning support page.
Other devices
- Fire TV: Open the Disney+ player’s subtitle controls. Device captions are under Settings > Accessibility > Closed Caption.
- Android TV or Google TV: Use Audio & Subtitles in the player, then check system accessibility settings if needed.
- PlayStation: Check Settings > Accessibility > Closed Captions and enable caption display.
- Xbox: Check the console’s Settings > Ease of Access > Closed Captioning area.
- Chromecast: Open the subtitle controls in the Disney+ playback interface. Available controls can differ depending on how you are casting and the device running the app.
Console menu names can vary by software version. Disney+ describes device-specific subtitle appearance controls and availability in its caption formatting guide.

If captions are selected but invisible
A caption track can be active yet hard to see because its font is too small, its color blends into the picture, its background is transparent, or a device-level style is overriding the app. Increase text size and contrast, and check opacity for both text and background. On supported smart TVs, Disney+’s path is generally Audio & Subtitles > Subtitle Styling; not every platform offers the same styling options.
- iPhone or iPad: Open Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning > Style, then inspect the selected style’s font, size, color, opacity, and background.
- Google Android devices: Open Settings > Accessibility > Caption preferences > Caption size and style.
- Samsung devices: Look under Settings > Accessibility > Hearing for Google subtitles (CC) or Samsung subtitles (CC). Names differ by model and Android version.
- Fire TV: Check Settings > Accessibility > Closed Caption.
- PlayStation or Xbox: Check the console’s closed-caption accessibility controls described above.
Fire TV exception: Disney+ says subtitles are not available on the first-generation Fire TV Stick. If that is your device, changing caption settings or reinstalling the app will not add support for subtitles. See Disney+’s caption formatting and device guidance.
If only one title or language is affected
Disney+ language options vary by title and region, and a particular episode may have a missing, delayed, incomplete, or faulty caption track. Some titles also use forced subtitles only for particular foreign-language dialogue or on-screen text; those are not necessarily full-dialogue captions.
- Try another episode in the same series, then a different movie or show.
- Check whether another subtitle language is available.
- Try the affected title on another device. If the same portion fails there too, that points toward the title’s track rather than the original device.
- If the language is missing, change the profile’s App Language and check the title again. This may load a different version when one is available, but cannot create a track that Disney+ does not offer for that title and region.
Disney+ explains language availability in its video language help page; its instructions for changing a profile language are at How to change the language on Disney+. Do not assume that changing location will add a track: availability depends on the title and region.

If every title is affected, refresh the app and device
Use these steps in order. Restarting and updating are less disruptive than clearing data or reinstalling.
1. Fully close and reopen Disney+
- Exit Disney+ completely rather than only returning to the device’s home screen.
- Close other running apps if the device allows it.
- Reopen Disney+, play a title, and select the caption track again.
2. Restart the device and install updates
Restart the phone, TV, console, or streaming device and wait for it to finish booting. Then check the device’s app store for a Disney+ update and system settings for an operating-system update. On a computer, update the browser through its About or Settings menu. Disney+ includes restarting equipment and updating its app and system software in its streaming troubleshooting guidance.
3. Clear temporary data where the device allows it
Clearing data may sign you out and reset app preferences. Paths vary by manufacturer; Disney+’s device instructions are in its cache and data guide.
- Android phone or tablet: Settings > Apps > Disney+ > Storage > Clear Cache. If the issue remains, try Clear Data.
- Android TV: Settings > Applications > Disney+ > Clear Cache, then Clear Data if needed.
- Fire TV: Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Disney+ > Clear Cache or Clear Data.
- Computer browser: Clear the browser’s cache and cookies. You may have to sign in again. See Disney+’s browser cache instructions.
- Apple TV: Disney+ recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the app rather than using a conventional clear-cache control.
Clearing data can address corrupted temporary app or browser state; it cannot restore a track missing from a title.

4. Reinstall Disney+ if the problem persists
- Uninstall Disney+.
- Restart the device.
- Install Disney+ again from the device’s official app store, then sign in and test more than one title.
Disney+ says reinstalling can provide the latest app version available for the device and resolve some streaming problems; see its reinstall instructions. You may need to sign in again and download offline titles again. Reinstalling will not fix a missing title track or an unsupported device. Avoid unofficial modified apps.

If Disney+ plays in a browser but captions fail, first try a private or incognito window. Temporarily disable extensions that can interfere with playback, such as ad blockers, content filters, pop-up blockers, antivirus browser features, or proxy and traffic-acceleration tools. This is a diagnostic test, not a reason to leave security protections disabled.
Confirm that JavaScript and cookies are enabled, then clear cache and cookies or try another supported, updated browser. Disney+ identifies browser filters and related tools as possible sources of playback trouble in its screen and playback troubleshooting and streaming guidance.
When captions fail alongside playback or offline viewing
Network instability is not usually a separate subtitle setting, but playback problems can prevent a timed-text track from loading correctly. If video is also buffering or failing, test another streaming app, move closer to the Wi-Fi router or use Ethernet if possible, pause other high-bandwidth activity, and restart the modem, router, and streaming device. Disney+’s internet speed guidance and streaming troubleshooting cover connection and power-cycle checks.

If playback is through an external player, receiver, soundbar, or display and the picture is blank or unstable too, reseat the HDMI cable and check the connected components. HDCP 2.2 is relevant to 4K Ultra HD and HDR playback; it is not a typical explanation for captions alone disappearing.
If the problem happens only with a downloaded title, force-close Disney+, restart the device, update the app, and delete and download the title again. Disney+ lists these steps for download-related issues.
When to contact Disney+
Contact Disney+ support if the problem persists across multiple titles after the checks above, follows your profile across devices, or appears to be a missing, incorrect, delayed, or incomplete caption track. For a title-specific problem, include the movie or series and episode, the point where captions fail, the language selected, device model, app version if visible, country or region, and whether other titles or devices work.
