Press the same keys again to turn it back on. If you want to prevent Narrator from returning, disable its startup options and keyboard shortcut in Narrator settings.
Stop Narrator immediately
- Hold the Windows logo key.
- Press Ctrl and Enter together.
- Release all keys.
Narrator should stop speaking and close its active screen-reading function. Microsoft documents this as the current Windows 10 on/off shortcut: Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter.
Some much older Windows 10 builds used Windows logo key + Enter. If the three-key shortcut does nothing, try that older combination, then update or check the Narrator settings for your build.
Another way to exit Narrator
With Narrator running, press Narrator key + Esc. The Narrator key is usually Caps Lock or Insert, but the active key depends on your Narrator settings and keyboard layout. See Microsoft’s Narrator command reference.

Turn Narrator off in Windows 10 Settings
- Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N to open Narrator settings.
- Under Use Narrator, switch Narrator to Off.
You can also use the mouse: Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Narrator. The keyboard route is useful when speech makes it difficult to navigate the screen. Microsoft’s introductory guide documents the settings shortcut and main toggle at Chapter 1: Introducing Narrator.
If you cannot easily see or operate the window
- Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N.
- Press Tab until the Narrator toggle is selected.
- Press Spacebar to change it.
- Continue pressing Tab to reach startup and shortcut controls, using Spacebar to clear unwanted options.
Pressing Ctrl can interrupt Narrator’s current reading while you work, but it does not turn Narrator off or change its startup settings. Microsoft explains that distinction in Narrator basics.

Stop Narrator from starting automatically
Switching Narrator off for the current session is separate from its automatic-start choices. In Narrator settings, expand Show all settings beside the main control and turn off the options that apply to your situation:
- Start Narrator after sign-in prevents it from launching when your account enters the desktop.
- Start Narrator before sign-in (or Start Narrator before sign-in for everyone, depending on the build) prevents narration on the sign-in screen and can affect every user.
These controls are described in Microsoft’s Narrator customization guide. On some sign-in screens, the Accessibility icon also provides a Narrator control, although its wording and location can vary by Windows 10 build.

Prevent accidental activation
If Narrator starts when you press a keyboard combination by mistake, open Windows logo key + Ctrl + N, expand the settings, and turn off Keyboard shortcut for Narrator (also shown on some builds as Allow the shortcut key to start Narrator). This disables the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter activation shortcut without removing Narrator from Windows.

If you still need Narrator navigation, braille, or other functions but do not want spoken output temporarily, try Narrator key + Shift + S. Microsoft’s current Narrator documentation describes this as a speech on/off command. Availability and behavior can differ on older Windows 10 installations, and it leaves Narrator active; use the main off shortcut when you want Narrator closed.

If the computer keeps talking
When Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter has no effect, the voice may not be Narrator. Use this quick check:
- Voice stops with the shortcut: it was probably Narrator; review its startup and shortcut settings if it returns.
- Voice continues: check Windows Speech Recognition, voice typing, Magnifier’s reading feature, or another accessibility tool.
- Only one app speaks: look in that browser, game, Microsoft Office program, or application’s accessibility and read-aloud settings.
- A third-party screen reader is installed: NVDA, JAWS, and similar software have their own controls and shortcuts.
Do not uninstall Narrator. It is a built-in Windows accessibility feature; turning it off and changing its startup settings are the supported approaches.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 continues to run after Microsoft’s regular support ended on October 14, 2025. Version 22H2 was the final mainstream release for Home and Pro editions.
