First check whether the message is missing from the WhatsApp chat or whether it is there without an alert. A message visible in the chat points to notifications, chat settings, or background restrictions; a message absent from the chat points instead to connectivity, delivery, the sender or recipient account, linked devices, or a service problem. Check another conversation and switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data before changing settings or reinstalling the app.
Start by identifying what is missing
Open WhatsApp and inspect the affected conversation. Then compare it with another chat and, if possible, ask the sender what status appears beside the message. The scope—one contact, one group, all chats, or one device—often narrows the cause faster than changing settings at random.

Read the check marks as clues, not a diagnosis
A clock or pending indicator means the sender’s app has not successfully sent the message. One gray check means it was sent to WhatsApp but has not been delivered to the recipient’s device; two gray checks indicate delivery. Two blue checks generally indicate it was read when read receipts apply. The distinctions are described in this study of WhatsApp message indicators.
One gray check does not prove that you have been blocked. The recipient may be offline, the phone may be off, the account may be inactive, or a service or network problem may be involved. WhatsApp does not give a definitive blocked notification; overlapping signs are discussed in this blocking-indicators discussion.

Try the quick, non-destructive checks
- Test the internet connection. Open a website or another internet-dependent app. Turn Wi-Fi off and test cellular data, then try Wi-Fi again. A Wi-Fi icon does not guarantee usable internet access.
- Check Airplane Mode and network filters. Turn Airplane Mode off. If you use a VPN, private DNS, firewall, or filtering app, temporarily disable it for a test.
- Compare chats and devices. Ask the sender to message another person, and check whether the problem affects one chat or all chats. Note whether WhatsApp Web or Desktop behaves differently.
- Restart WhatsApp and the phone. Reopen the app; if the issue continues, restart the phone. Restart the router only if other devices also lack internet access.
- Update WhatsApp. Install the app from the official WhatsApp download page, Google Play, or Apple App Store. Menu names and behavior can vary by app and operating-system version.
If messages are present but alerts are missing
When a message appears after opening WhatsApp, delivery may be working while alerts or background updates are delayed. Check both the phone’s notification settings and WhatsApp’s own settings.
Android notifications
On many Android phones, open Settings → Notifications → App notifications → WhatsApp. Confirm notifications are allowed, including the message and group categories. Check lock-screen display and whether alerts are silent when you expect sound, banners, or vibration. Labels vary by Android version and phone maker.
Then open WhatsApp → Settings → Notifications and review message, group, and call preferences. Also check the phone’s notification volume, Bluetooth audio routing, smartwatch alerts, and Do Not Disturb or Bedtime settings.
iPhone notifications
Open Settings → Notifications → WhatsApp. Turn on Allow Notifications and select the alert locations you want, such as Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners. Review Sounds and Badges if you use them, and check whether Scheduled Summary is delaying delivery.
In WhatsApp, open Settings → Notifications. Also check Settings → Focus for modes that silence WhatsApp, and Settings → Cellular → WhatsApp to ensure cellular access is allowed. Apple’s message troubleshooting guidance emphasizes device, software, and line settings; its Messages support page covers Apple Messages rather than WhatsApp, so WhatsApp-specific controls remain in WhatsApp and iOS settings.

Look for a hidden or specially configured chat
Check muted and archived chats, locked chats, unread or filtered views, and any custom notification setting for the affected person or group. Depending on archive settings, an archived chat may stay out of the main list. A locked chat may hide message details in notifications. Disappearing messages can also make older content unavailable; that is different from a new message failing to arrive.
If messages arrive only when WhatsApp is opened
This pattern often points to background activity or notification delivery rather than a failed message. Operating systems and phone makers can restrict background data or battery use, so the exact control is not universal.
Android background and battery controls
In Settings, search for WhatsApp under controls named Battery optimization, Background usage limits, Sleeping apps, Autostart, or Background activity. If WhatsApp is restricted, allow background use or choose an unrestricted or optimized setting rather than a restricted one. Also check Data Saver and allow background data for WhatsApp.

Changing battery restrictions can increase battery use and is not a guaranteed fix. Do not clear app storage or reset network settings as an early step. Android’s “Checking for messages…” notification is a separate system-level behavior noted in this Android-specific support article; it is not the same as a normal incoming-message alert.
iPhone background controls
Check Settings → General → Background App Refresh and confirm it is enabled for WhatsApp, then review Settings → Cellular → WhatsApp. Low Power Mode, Focus, or a notification summary can also affect when activity is apparent. Avoid repeatedly force-quitting WhatsApp as a routine fix; closing an app can interfere with its background behavior on some systems.
If messages are missing from the chat
When only one person or group is affected
Confirm the sender is using your current WhatsApp number, especially after a number change or migration to a new phone. Ask the sender whether the message is pending, at one check, or delivered. If other conversations work, focus on that sender’s phone and connection, the account or number involved, and the individual chat’s settings rather than resetting your whole phone.

For a group, check whether the conversation is muted, archived, locked, or hidden by a filtered view. If the group is otherwise working, a general WhatsApp connectivity failure is less likely.

When all conversations are affected
Test Wi-Fi and cellular separately and confirm that other apps can reach the internet. Check whether WhatsApp opens normally or shows an account, connection, or verification message. If sending and receiving both fail for several contacts despite working internet access, investigate app updates, account status, linked devices, and a possible service incident.
When only photos, videos, or documents fail
Check available phone storage, WhatsApp storage usage, media permissions, cellular access, Data Saver, and WhatsApp’s media download settings. Text delivery can work even when media downloads fail. Note the file type and whether the problem occurs on Wi-Fi as well as cellular.

Check linked devices and account security
On your phone, open WhatsApp → Settings → Linked Devices (the location may vary slightly by platform and version). Review the devices, last-active times, and whether the issue appears only on one session. WhatsApp’s multi-device design allows linked devices to receive synchronized information and maintain their own local message state, so their behavior can differ from the primary phone; see Meta’s explanation of multi-device operation.
- Log out any unfamiliar linked device, or a stale session that is malfunctioning, then test again.
- If a device is unfamiliar and account compromise is possible, secure your phone’s screen lock and enable WhatsApp two-step verification.
- Never share a WhatsApp registration code. If you receive an unexpected verification request or lose access to the number, contact your mobile carrier and WhatsApp Support.
- Use the official WhatsApp app. Meta describes device-verification protections and recommends avoiding unofficial apps in its device-verification security explanation.
WhatsApp announced Strict Account Settings in January 2026 as a security measure for certain interactions, especially involving unknown senders. It may affect how some calls, attachments, or unfamiliar contacts behave, but is not the default explanation for ordinary missing messages. See Meta’s announcement.

Before clearing data or reinstalling
Reinstalling is not a safe first fix: without a usable backup, chats may not be recoverable, and setup may require access to the registered phone number. First confirm that the number is correct, that you can receive its SMS or call verification, and that you can access the Google or Apple account used for backup.
- Check WhatsApp’s backup status and date before deleting the app.
- Confirm the backup belongs to the relevant WhatsApp number and cloud account.
- Do not use Android’s Clear storage/data as if it were the same as clearing cache; clearing storage can remove local app data and require account setup again.
- iPhone does not offer the same general-purpose clear-cache control as Android. Offloading and deleting an app have different consequences.
If chats matter and the backup status is unknown, do not delete or reinstall WhatsApp until you understand what can be restored.
Decide whether the problem may be service-wide
A service disruption becomes more plausible if sending and receiving fail for multiple contacts, other people on different networks report the same symptoms, or WhatsApp shows connection errors despite normal internet access. A delayed message in one conversation alone is not evidence of an outage. Check WhatsApp’s official channels and reputable current outage reporting; if a broader incident is evident, avoid repeated reinstalls and wait for service recovery.
Contact WhatsApp Support with useful details
If the problem persists across chats and networks after the checks above, use WhatsApp’s in-app support or its official contact page. Include the phone model, Android or iOS version, WhatsApp version, country and carrier, approximate start time, whether messages are absent or merely unnotified, any check-mark or error state, and whether the issue occurs on Wi-Fi, cellular, and linked devices. A screenshot of the status or error can help; avoid sharing private chat contents or verification codes.
